La Piscine Art Hotel
Ranked #2 of 84 Hotels in Skiathos
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 14, 2012

June 2012 was our third visit to La Piscine in as many years. In our opinion the hotel has maintained its excellence throughout. The changes we have seen have been of a positive nature in respect of the ' Crazy Cow Restaurant '. over our recent holidays here it has grown in stature and must be one of the finest dining facilities incorporated within a hotel. The food is of high quality and cooked to our liking, the menu is quite varied, the service is second to none and the ambience is perfect. This is as the name suggests, a restaurant and not a taverna ( good ones are in an abundence around the town ).
As mentioned in a previous report finding good accommodation at affordable prices in greece is not easy especially if your available weeks are fixed. We appreciate that one size does not fit all and this hotel will not suit everyone, but for us it ticks all the boxes. We like the Town on an evening, good tavernas, bars, safe and friendly atmosphere are all on the doorstep of this hotel.
Last but not least the staff at La Piscine are second to none EVERY member of the establishment are extremely friendly and helpful and good at what they do, they give a warm welcome to all there guests new and old alike and we believe are sincere in their wish to make everyones holiday special.
I cannot praise enough the Island and this hotel and yes we have booked to return in 2013.
Paul and Sue. East Yorkshire.

We had a last minute change of accommodation (through Thomas Cook) as our chosen hotel had decided to close a week earlier than our booking. Our feelings were similar to a previous reviewer-that the tour operator shouldn't have taken the original booking. Anyway,we were desperate to go back to Skiathos, having visited before, so we approached this change as an opportunity and booked into the La Piscine with an open mind.

The welcome was, as described by other reviewers, pleasant and booking in was simple and speedy. A relaxing (complimentary) drink by the pool is a nice touch and a good way to start the holiday. Our cases were taken to our room, which was a reasonable size, overlooking the pool. We were disappointed that it didn't come with the private balcony that our original booking had (not good Thomas Cook). The room was simple but very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. The bathroom had everything we needed but it felt a little dated. Again very clean. The public areas had a bit more character with arty murals and large colourful art work and huge comfy seating areas.

The air conditioning was an experience. We too had the spiel about the eco friendly policy of it being centrally controlled... In essence it didn't cause us an issue, the receptionist was always helpful and by the middle of the week was switching it on for us as we walked through reception on return from our evening out. Thanks for that. I don't agree that having to scrabble around in the dark, find the phone, make a call, disturb your other half etc when a simple hop out of bed to do it yourself is the best solution. That said we had no major issue with it.

The hotel and staff go to great effort to create a candle lit romantic atmosphere in the evenings. The pool area looks amazing. However, all illusion was shattered for us by noisy English guests drinking late into the night and loud music from the bar. Had this not been the case we probably wouldn't have bothered with the aircon and would have just slept with the windows open-which is our preference. The general rowdy drinking did dampen our experience of La Piscine to an extent (enough to make us not go back). When we stayed the hotel was no more than a quarter full.Had it been busier, with similar clientelle,it would have been unbearable. We tend to spend all day out and about and we prefer to eat in local tavernas so this really only caused an issue when we wanted to sleep (or eat our breakfast in peace when the drinking, shrieking, etc continued !).

For us the breakfast was actually pretty good. Although the choice didn't change there was plenty on offer, lovely Greek yogourt, decent coffee, cereals, bread, meat, cheese and a range of cooked items. However, there is room for improvement. We expect fresh orange juice (or at least something resembling it-cartoned juice would be fine). Reconstituted 'squash' is not acceptable in a 4 star hotel. We also echo other comments, previously made, that the breakfast buffet really cries our for a better selection of fresh fruit. These two small improvements would have made the breakfast perfect for us.

So,it is a mixed review. The staff were helpful, polite and always asked if we'd had a good day etc. Special mention for the chap in the bib and braces who every morning pottered around the pool setting up the sunbeds and towels and similarly dismantled it at night. The hotel is well located just outside the town and has everything that we needed. It's design means that most rooms are centred around the pool. So if you're not a party animal or you're a light sleeper this probably isn't for you. We enjoyed our holiday and overall our experience of La Piscine was a good one.

From the minute we arrived at La Piscine the weights of the world were lifted, this place is just so chilled.

From the effusive welcome on arrival until the moment we left 2 weeks later, nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Everyone was friendly and attentive without being overly so, the whole atmosphere was just like a happy family.

The rooms were large, comfortable and very clean. Jarge clean pool and pool area with free towels and excellent sunbeds and parasols..

Food at breakfast was excellent, as well as the selection available during the day. The pièce de résistance however was in the evening. The Crazy Cow restaurant, available to residents and non-residents, was stunning. There is an extensive menu available every evening, including the best steaks on the island, added to which are daily changing specials. The wickedly tempting desserts were lovely.

All in all don't just think about going to La Piscine - do it!

This was our third visit to La Piscine, so obviously we like the place. The front of house staff could not be more helpful and friendly. The cleaners also do a good job. The bedroom was comfortable and there are plenty of places round the hotel to relax. We were overlooking the pool and bar which we did find noisy at times. People were shouting rather than talking and the owners were present drinking with guests adding to the noise.OK we want to have a good time on holiday but at times it was over the top. The same group were also shouting from the bar to friends on loungers on the other side of the pool. At times it was difficult to relax.
Breakfast was fine to start with, but as time went on there was a gradual reduction of items available. The fruit at the end consisted of red or green apples - this is just not good enough. Fruit of all sorts was availble in the islands supermarkets. They did not have any oranges so you could not have fresh juice by the pool.

We were moved to La Piscine from our original hotel when it closed for the season in the middle of our stay (not their fault - we booked very last minute - the agent shouldn't have allowed the booking really) and we're grateful to La Piscine for accommodating us. I think the two are owned by the same company as they both seem to be 'Art' hotels, they are both 4*, but Kivo far outweighed La Piscine in my opinion.

We didn't experience fruit in our rooms or drinks on arrival - maybe as we arrived mid holiday or didn't book directly with them. We did experience:

- A breakfast that was below par - the cooked breakfast smelt and tasted awful, and the continental side was disappointing (it would have been nice to have fresh coffee at the table, and real honey instead of everything in plastic sachets - we're in Greece - honey is everywhere!) It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit available that wasn't sorry looking apples or tinned peaches.

- The poolside bar was quite loud from morning to evening - we could hear the music from our room - coupled with the noise from guests in the evening it kept us up until it closed around 1am. I imagine that none of the rooms overlooking the pool would be able to avoid the noise which would be a million times worse in high season. As the alternative was a view of the carpark and a whole different kind of disturbance we stuck with it. If the hotel want to keep the bar open that late, perhaps they should invest in sound proofing for the rooms or enclose the bar.

- Not being able to control our own air conditioning unit - you had to phone down to reception to have it turned on or off. Especially frustrating in the middle of the night if it gets to cold or hot in your room. I imagine this is more for cost cutting than the environmental reasons given. We were told it switched off itself in the night but it didn't.

- Bathroom had a subtle drain smell to it.

Staff were friendly, Olga very helpful, and they lent us an umbrella the evening it rained. The rooms were nice, normal generic city hotel room stuff, clean, comfortable bed. Location is good if you want to stay in a town - 5 minute walk into the centre, and the pool is big, if a bit chilly! Nice furnishings, loads of books and magazines to choose from and a beautiful ginger cat :)

A few issues that could be improved without much effort that would make a huge difference to guests. For us, it was fine for a few days but we wouldn't choose to book La Piscine because we feel it is the low end of the 4* standard. If the management could do something about the noise and the breakfast it would be of huge benefit to them and the clientele.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool also overlook the bar/restaurant. Make of that what you will!

Where to Start... Arrival... "Usually" this beginning part of your trip is one of arriving in a hot dusty car park, fighting your way to book in and then dragging your suitcase into a non-air conditioned room unless you cough up £50.00!! NOT IN THIS HOTEL!! Upon arrival we were personally greeted by the lovely hotel manager & were Swiftly booked in by hotel reception. There was no dragging of suitcases as the Manager immediately took us to the beautiful pool side bar for complimentary drinks while our bags were taken to our room... & relax.....!! Our room was lovely, spacious, clean & we had air con at no extra cost!! This is controlled by reception & one swift call allows you to turn off or on upon request. The hotel itself was beautiful, tranquil with a bubble of music, laughter & fun from both the guests & staff who were very friendly & accommodating. We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis which was buffet style and very nice. The hotel also has its own restaurant called the Crazy Cow which has rave reviews on trip advisor, check them out!! The hotel is situated within a short walk from the main town & port so it's ideally located.
Hint - Usually a hotel is more expensive for drinks than the bars outside of the complex... In this instance this hotel is very reasonably priced!! Enjoy, we did x

We went to Skiathos in June for the first time and stayed for one week at La Piscine. Having read some really good reviews on Trip Advisor I was expecting a fairly high standard. It did not disappoint! Met on arrival by the lovely Olga and shown to the pool area for a welcome drink. I knew just having sat there for five minutes that we had made the right choice! Lovely tranquil surroundings with a good sized pool and very comfortable sunbeds. We had a room overlooking the pool but with a big palm tree in front of it, however we did not mind as it was nice to get a little shade if sat on the balcony after a days sunbathing. The rooms were immaculate and reminded me more of being in Sorrento in Itay than Greece as the places we have been to before in Greece have all been pretty basic.
The breakfast they served was of a high standard and had everything you could pretty much think of and as much as you wanted. We ate most lunchtimes there and I had what was probably one of the best Greek salads I have ever had and very reasonable to for a hotel. We ordered a burger one day but it was that big that I could only manage half of it!
The staff were really lovely, especially Olga, Eva and Michael and really looked after you, nothing was too much trouble for them. The bar area was nice and relaxed and drinks were really reasonable compared to some other hotels. We had a lovely evening meal one night there, the ambience around the pool area in the evening is gorgeous when they light all the candles.
Loved Skiathos so much that we are hoping to return next year, it really is a beautiful island, so much to see and do and La Piscine certainly made our visit very special.
