“So-So at the Yialis Apartments”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2008

The Yalis studios provide an ideal solution for a last minute, cheap holiday, however there are a few things you may like to consider before booking… The rooms are beyond basic. They are self-catering, however trying to cook without even basic equipment like a sharp knife, cheese grater and chopping board isn’t ideal. There is no air-con, which if you are planning to visit in summer (I went in Aug ’08) becomes unbearable – there is not even a ceiling fan to ease the temperature and don’t try opening the doors unless you want to be eaten by mosquitoes… The room was clean-ish, and the maid will come in once a day to mop the floors. None of the showers are fixed to the wall so it’s an ‘interesting’ experience trying to wash your hair! In addition, unless you live in a big city you may struggle to get used to the traffic noise – the rooms at the front of the property are right by the (very busy) road and even being a Londoner, I found the noise getting a bit much at times. If your room is at the back of the property then you may struggle with the noise from the bar, as people seemed to stay up until the early hours of the morning, music still blaring…

The pool/bar area is nice, although there is a dog which steals your flip flops and poos everywhere (not cleaned up by the owners) which is rather rank, so if you don’t like dogs, don’t go to this resort! The pool also got gradually more and more dirty over the week I was there, and by the end of the week it was murky green, scummy and resembled a dirty pond more than a pool. The owner Nikos kept demanding that it was safe, but obviously needs a good clean. The studios are in a great location though – the beach is 2 minutes down the road with a few decent bars and taverna’s and the water taxi will take you over to the town or you can jump on the bus outside the studios to get around the island.

All in all, this was a so-so holiday – not blissfully quiet and peaceful, but a fair place to go for a last minute tan.

I stayed in the Yalis studios from 11 to 25 July 2008, so the weather was fantastic (if you like the heat). The first and most important thing is that the rooms were cleaned every day and were spotless with regular changes of bedding and towels. Mine had a 'wetroom' rather than a shower cubicle, but this wasn't a problem. Endless supply of hot water for getting rid of all the suncream at the end of the day and more kitchen space than you could shake a stick at!
The apartments are just off the main road at Achladies, and only a few minutes walk from a beautiful beach and a handful of fabulous tavernas, 3 supermarkets and a bakery. The bus stop (No. 10) is only a matter of yards away, so its a perfect location. There is also a regular water taxi in to town from Achladies beach (2Euros).
However, on arrival at the Yalis, I was horrified to find that my 'inland view' was a whitewashed wall, covered in pipes and blackened out windows only four feet away from the door. It had a long thin veranda (only as wide as a small bistro type chair), a 2 foot wide path running infront and then THE WALL!!
The main 2 storey block of eight aprtments have either road/mountain or pool views which are fine, but a second single storey block has been built adjacent to it and the first 3 apartments (19, 18 & 17) are facing the wall. The apartments in this block are seperated by 5 ft high wooden screens so the rooms don't get any air, are stifling and dark. Nikos, the owner, did eventually take one of my screens down so I could overlook the garden, otherwise it would have been unbearable.
Nikos is an excellent barman, very attentive and always willing to keep his guests company in the bar on an evening. He also cooks breakfasts and snacks in the bar area (make sure you have insect repellant on if you go in to the bar toilets - they are full of mozzies).
My other complaint about Yalis is the pool. The surrounding area and beautiful gardens are well kept with lovely wooden sunloungers and umberellas. However, the pool got worse during the 2 weeks of my stay - it was never cleaned, was scummy and it was left to guests to fish out the hundreds of dead insects and leaves. The water was not treated, so by my last day, it actually looked like pea soup! If there was any sunbathing to be done, I opted for the beach!
I wouldn't stay at the Yalis again because there are so many other places to stay and I certainly wouldn't recommend it. Sorry if you've booked already - hope you are lucky and don't get a room overlooking THE WALL!!

The Yialis Apartments are really close to the beach and provide a really good base for exploring the island. The rooms are large and clean and the pool area with snack bar is very well cared for too.

All in all a great place to stay!

My sister and I have just returned from a two week stay in the Yalis Apartments, Skiathos. Our first impressions of the apartment was clean, new and typically Greek. The bathroom was a wetroom but the shower did not have a shower head / hose holder. The room was cleaned thoroughly everyday and we had new towels and bedding every three days. The balcony had a pool view and a seating area. Our only complaint with the accommodation was that the mattress was very uncomfortable and we would wake up with back and neck ache. The owners are very friendly and helpful and many of the people that stayed in the Yalis were people that had been before and loved the place.

Achladies is a small town with no centre, there are three supermarkets and one bakery. There are a number of tavernas along the beach front which all serve typical Greek food.

After looking at all the restaurants along the front we decided that the only restaurant to go to was the first (Taverna Perigiali), being the most typical Greek and with lovely friendly staff. We spent every evening at this restaurant and have tried the whole menu, all the food was fabulous, especially the homemade pizzas!

Skiathos town was a short taxi drive away (6 euros) and the town was very pretty filled with cafes and restaurants. The old port was the best part of the town as it was quirky and relaxed, it had cute little shops and was a great place to watch the world go by.

The strip is a street by the new port set away from the restaurants and is filled with nightclubs.

Skiathos is a great island to go to for both relaxation and for partying.

This holiday was such a much needed chill out. Nikos and family could not do enough to cater for your every need. Information about the Island was delivered expertly, including the best tavernas not only in Achaladies but other areas of the Island. Spend a night at the pool bar with Nikos and his friends and enjoy fabulous Skiathan hospitality. Admitted rooms are basic, but cleaned every day. All you need is a clean room to sleep and shower facilities.

First time in Skiathos which was really nice. Achladies is the ideal location as quick easy access to Skiathos town by taxi, bus or water taxi but you are stil only a couple of minutes walk from the beautiful Achladies beach. There are four nice tavernas on the beach and the food is fine. Although busy Skiathos Town has been developed in a sympathetic way and is not so brash as the main resort of some other Greek Islands. We tended to spend alternate nights locally and then in town.
The bar and pool area at Yalis is fine. The couple who run it are very friendly. The rooms however are frankly dreadful. More than outdated they would in my opinion be better described as dilapidated and basic in the extreme.
I loved Skiathos and Achladies but couldn't wait to get away from the horrible room. We didn't complain as it was a last minute cheapie but I certainly wouldn't return to Yalis until the accomodation has been updated.
