“Tranquil Accomodation, great central location”
Reviewed August 16, 2009

We stayed at Zorbas in Aghia Paraskevi back in June. Our rep off the bus walked us to the apartements which are situated up in the hills. Nothing else around and the road at the back leads on to tracks where you could walk over the the other side of the island. Clean and well kept accomodation. Family ran though we rarely saw them. 2 of the brothers Nikos and the other older one ran the bar in the evenings on occasions. There english is very good and we enjoyed their company. Only 5 mins stroll down to Aghia where there are plenty of choices to eat, I have a list if anyone stayingin the area wishes to have just send me a PM. The only thing that we found was the 3rd bed, which was a bed settee was as hard as the tiled floor, we had to take it in turns to sleep on there. The pool are was lovley and the views great from the little infinity pool. Would stay there again but be where when you leave (and when you arrive) your suitcases are taken by a truck for you rather than the coach. We werent really told where to leave to them and luckily we decided to stay around the pool rather than down at the beach when they were picked up. For one lot of suitcases we found out after should have been picked up a couple of hours later as the they had a later flight but the men on the truck just took what was by the wall. They didnt speak a word of english so couldnt explain to them. They also started to drive off leaving some that were not left with the others! None of the family were there to help with any problems. Skiathos is a beautiful island, has many wonderful beaches and Aghia has fabolous sun beds, it was like sleeping on a bed! We used the buses and taxes to travel to

Vromolimnos
Maratha Beach
Mandraki Elias
Achiladies

Fabolous holiday and if the price was right I would stay at Zorbas again but then there are so many to choose from!

These apartments are set up a very steep hill known as 'Cardiac Hill'. It would take around 5 or so minutes to climb to the apartments from the main road.

The rooms are quite small but not cramped. The view from the rooms is fantastic, worth climbing the hill for. The kitchen facilities include a fridge with a little freezer compartment, kettle, sandwich toaster, 1 normal size and 1 tiny hob ring and some cooking implements, no sharp knife or bottle opener though.

I would have prefered a toaster to a sandwich toaster for breakfast purposes though and I have stayed in other accomodation that provides microwave/oven facilities but not here, so only omelettes or toasties could be made. There were not enough sockets in the kitchen area so i couldn't have a toastie and a hot drink on the go at the same time.

Hair dryers are provided in the rooms but mine had been dropped at some point and showed the wires. I enquired about this but they came to the room and switched it on and it worked so they couldn't understand my problem such as the risk of an electric shock!

This is the ONLY place I have ever stayed at where you have to purchase your own toilet rolls as they are not provided. The linen change was also very sporadic. We had to use the same towels for up to 4 days in a row before they were changed.

The beds were made 5 out of 7 days but the floor was only cleaned twice a week. This meant that you either had to use the dustpan and broom left in the bathroom (which was neither use nor ornament) or continue getting sandy and dirty feet after a shower. Also, I never expected to have to attempt to clean the floor in my own room whilst on holiday.

Also, there was a thick layer of grease/dirt on top of the extractor fan that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time.

Air con is available and is charged at 6 euros a day. Fridges and safety deposit boxes are provided free of charge. The bar is well stocked and the prices are good, around 3 euros for a pint and the only place I know where they are good enough to charge half price for half a lager at 1.50, (most other places charge 2 euros).

The 3 brothers that run the bar are really friendly and happy to talk, offer recomendations and whatever else you need.

I wouldn't return to Zorbas for all these reasons which is a shame as the area is so beautiful and the views fantastic. If they made just a few simple changes and improvements then it would make this a great base for your holiday, just not at the moment I'm afraid.

Our first time to Skiathos and therefore Zorbas. They get a lot of repeat guests and it is easy to see why. We have never felt so welcome on any of our previous holidays. This is a small family run concern, they take great pride in their site and it is spotlessly clean. There is no reception here but there is always one member of the family at the pool bar when it opens at 11am. The 3 sons run the pool bar which stays open in the evening until the last person is ready to leave and will entertain you with their general chat and jokes - the service is excellent, expect to pay 3 euros for pint of draft Lowenbrau, 2 euros for soft drinks and 4 euros for long drinks (spirits and mixers). We had one of the studios which was well equipped (kettle, toastie machine, fridge, tv and hairdryer) and very clean. The safety deposit box was provided foc and air conditioning is available at an extra charge per unit per day - we did not need the air con as the temperature was just right all holiday! There is enough kitchen equipment to prepare basic meals if you so wish but I don't do cooking on holiday! We ate out each evening in Aghia Paraskevi and didn't have a bad meal anywhere, expect to pay around 30 euros for 2 starters, 2 mains and drinks. Prices were comparable in all of the restaurants we sampled.
It is easy to get around Skiathos as the bus service is excellent however we were there in the low season and I should imagine it gets very busy peak season.
There has been mention of the hill upto Zorbas (known affectionately as 'cardiac hill') but the views at the top ( and from all of the studios) are totally worth it. If you are of average fitness then it shouldn't be a problem - we went up and down the hill at least twice a day!

Skiathos is a beautiful island, a bit touristy but not in a bad or tacky way. If I could go back tomorrow I would and I would definately stay at Zorbas family house again!

My wife and I were on the first holiday flight of the year to Shiathos (1st May 2009) and therefore also one of the first guests of the season for the Zorba family. We were given Studio 12, lovely view, clean, tidy and more than enough space for the two of us.

The three brothers more or less run the Pool bar (draught Lowenbrau Pilsner). Angel, the youngest, had just returned from his National Service, so they were a full family again.

Everything was just about perfect and any small problems (we had no wine glasses in our Studio on arrival) were sorted there and then. The Studio next door had a doorlock problem and a small leak under their sink, again fixed as soon as the family were informed. How often does that happen anywhere on a Greek holiday?

Hot water at all times and a fully working shower and toilet, a good sized modern fridge, electric kettle and toast maker, two electric rings for cooking if required.

Cleaned daily and always with a smile.

The island is lovely and this small complex (they don't want to expand, wanting to try and keep their place managable and family orientated), typified the real sense of open friendliness we felt throughout our two weeks stay. We watched as the various bars, apartments and restuarants began to wake up and open their doors, no hurry, no rush, a truely laid back island and ideal for a laid back holiday.

Highly recommend Zorbas Family House, forget the small hillock, enjoy the view once at the top.

The apartment we stayed in was very clean, basically furnished but adequate although the beds were very hard and gave us a few bad nights sleep which we soon caught up on during the day on the beach. We did have a couple of bad experiences one of which was waking up to being flooded out caused by a blocked drain and heavy rainfall on the balcony. The owner of the premises eventually arrived at lunchtime and with a few hand gestures we were able to communicate our problem to him. He made a few frantic phone calls then set to sweeping the water out – after giving my husband and neighbour a broom too! If it wasn’t for our lovely neighbours, Bev & Kev, who helped and put us up in their room until everything had dried out we would have been stuck.

The second occasion was a few days later when after showering we noticed water flowing out from the bathroom. One of the sons was at the bar that day and quickly took action. Without going into too much detail an earlier resident had flushed loo paper down the toilet, this eventually blocked the system hence the dirty water coming up through the bathroom drain in the floor. The owner dealt with the problem quickly and made sure everything was thoroughly disinfected and to our satisfaction.

Because it was very hot we paid the €6 per night for the air conditioning which was certainly needed. The main unit was in the kitchen area and did eventually work its was through to the bedroom but it was a shame the large ceiling fan in the bedroom was only for decorative purposes as this would have helped circulate the air.

The pool was about right for the size of the place and kept clean. Whilst we were there the tour rep carried out an inspection. The sons who run the bar are very friendly and you could tell who was on in the evenings when you looked out the window - one would put cushions on the chairs, light candles and play soft music whereas the other didn't but was very good at card tricks! They would never accept a tip when offered.

Sun loungers/umbrellas were mostly €7 per day on all the beaches and the bus fare was €2.80 return to get into Skiathos town which was well worth a visit. The beach at Aghia Paraskevi is lovely but does shelve quite steeply in places and you have to walk back to the road to get food or find a taverna. The supermarkets in the town were on the whole much cheaper than those in the village. Green Park was our favourite restaurant but you need to starve yourself before going as the meals are really lovely -large but very reasonable.

The hill – whoever said it wasn’t a problem – it was! We are relatively fit but found the hill daunting, particularly after an evening meal when you’re full up and if you have one too many to drink – either sleep on the beach or take a taxi – which some did (costing them €4 to get from the bottom of the hill to the top)! We made sure we packed up everything we needed each day so we wouldn’t have to go back up that hill. However, once you get to the top it is a little oasis and was nice to be able to have the peace and quiet of the hillside after an evening in the hubbub of everything.
Would we go again? – if there was a mini bus service to take you up the hill we probably would!
