“Perfection in Hydra”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

After three stressful days of business in Athens, my two nights on Hydra were a gift - much in thanks to my wonderful experience at Hotel Hydra. As a very frequent traveler, I am what some might call....picky. And I was a little nervous after reading the reviews on tripadvisor - the unanimously glowing reviews seemed too good to be true. But I am pleased to add my glowing review to the mix - Hotel Hydra was just perfect. Katerina was so kind and hospitable, making me feel exceptionally welcome. Room 202 was wonderful - spotless, bright, tastefully appointed, comfortable bed and seating, great water pressure...and the view. that balcony is special. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully arranged. The stairs are no joke and in hindsight i should have had a donkey take my roller bag up to the hotel upon arrival, but the climb did not bother me for the rest of my time there. I walked up to the hotel 2-3 times a day and it wasn't terrible. And absolutely worth it for such a gem of a hotel (and the view!). I am convinced there is no better place to stay on Hydra and I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: room 202 is the very best one! beautiful and spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the island.

We spent one weekend at Hotel Hydra and absolutely loved it. The building itself is a perfect example of up to date Greek island style - fresh and luxurious in its simplicity. The location is convenient with a very nice view over town and port.
Katerina, the host, on whom many here have commented, is very helpful indeed and goes out of her way to make her guests feel at home. I recommend Hotel Hydra without hesitation.

Room Tip: Room 202 is the room with the balcony and a fantastic view.

We had room 202 which has the balcony in the photo. The view was excellent of the entire town. The room is really a small apartment with a kitchen which is so nice to have for cocktails and snacks on the balcony. It looks like everything in the room is brand new and everything is exceptionally clean.

Katerina was very helpful and a wonderful host. We would love to return. Ask for help with your luggage from the harbor since there are lots of stairs. Katerina got someone to help us on the way back and I wished we had asked for arrival as well. We live in Delaware which is really flat but we are both quite fit. I think we counted about 140 steps which is not alot until you try to carry luggage with you.

We cannot say enought about Katerina and her hospitality during our stay in late June. She helped us make alternative arrangements to get to and from Hydra when the transit strike in Athens shut down the ferries. The rooms were the best we stayed in during our entire trip to Greece, clean and spacious. Ask for the room with the balcony, if available, for the best view of harbor. Great breakfast served on a beautiful terrace.

The hotel is up the hill, so be prepared for a walk. However, if you don't like climbing stairs, you shouldn't be visiting Greece. Let the donkeys carry your luggage.

Katerina was also very helpful with recommendations for beaches and restaurants. We hope to visit and stay with Katerina again!

Spent three days there in late June-what a treat! Yes you have to climb hundreds of steps but if you go to Hydra, where no motor vehicles are allowed you should know that already. The view is extremely rewarding- make sure you get a room with a view. Rooms are more like suites, very specious and with great amenities - the only thing lacking was a full body mirror. The real treasure is Katerina who runs this small hotel almost single handedly and is the most charming hostess you could wish for, as well as your personal info-point for all things Hydra! Highly recommended.

We just spent 8 days at this quite charming hotel in Hydra. Sure, you have to climb steps, almost 150 steps to be precise! But this is Hydra. Either you never want to climb any steps and you sleep directly in the port , near the donkeys and the mass of tourists, or you walk up stairs! We did just that. The first day, it seemed a lot, but after 48 hrs we got accustomed to climbing back and forth 3-4 times a day just like the locals do! The decor is splendid. The beautiful soft colours of the wall and of the furniture but first you have to stop by the reception to meet the gem that directs this hotel Katerina Nikolaidou. Always smiling, always at your very needs. She offers breakfast served anywhere in the hotel (room, terrace and probably as you chat wit her at her desk)! at any time of the day. And we did have our breakfast till 1pm! Fresh and still hot pastries, fresh fruits and anything else that you care for and that she can offer you from her small cuisine. We stayed in a larger room for 3 days, facing the port of Hydra. Very large living room . Very nice bedroom. Bathroom large enough for an hotel like this. A/C and a small kitchenette. We were then moved to a slightly smaller room with a balcony...the room with a balcony that most people wanted! Smaller living room, same size bed room but larger bathroom with bath/shower sliding doors closing completely. We had a partially closing bath/shower in the first room, and too much water got on the floor, but a very minor problem.
WiFi is free but they will have to change the capacity of their connection. On the second floor, you have to stay in the living room or else you lose the connection.
Beds were very confortable but the pillows were a bit hard, but I still managed to sleep 8-10 hours/night! So maybe those new "eco" pillows were not that bad, after all!
The offer clean beach towell daily for free. Daily room cleaning and changing of sheets and towells, if you so wish.
But I must come back to square one and point out the gentleness, the sweetness, the availabity of Katerina Nikolaidou. She is truly the heart of this charming hotel. Thank you Katerina from the bottom of our heart, as I remember leaving the hotel, as we were both dancing to the music of Katerina Polemi!! Efaristo poli!

Nice hotel, architect built it using expensive material and paying attention to the detail. Pleasant to stay with polite staff. It is also very clean. Our room had no view :( and it was big deal to climb up there especially carrying luggage!!! We were not informed about the level of difficulty and this is not fair! Breakfast had no variety but it was freshly baked (pastry) and prepared. It could be cheaper I suppose.
