“Spectacular Byzantine site”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

This Byzantine site on the side of a hill involves a lot of steps but it's a truly fascinating place and worth the climbing. We drove to the top and walked up to the castle on top of the hill which was an amazing experience.

“Touring Mystras on a Harley Davidson Motorcycle”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

We did arrive at Mystras after a long ride from Leonidion village and passing through awesome scenery and villages like Kosmas, Monastery Elionis and Sparta. Mystras is a fortified town and a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. The place is mystic with Byzantine ruins and yes you can walk inside the ancient castle. I recommend you ride to the top of the hill there is a parking and a ticket booth, this is easier to walk inside the castle. Your route ride is Elioni Monastery, Byzantine Mystras, Taygetos Mountain Range, is 236 km 146 miles. Mount Taygetos to Kalamata passing through caves cliffs is Just an awesome Tour, and is one of the best rides i ever have on a Harley Davidson motorcycle tour to Greece. questions welcome.

“Go early!”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

Mystras is an abandoned Byzantine city. It was the capital of the Despotate of Morea and the second city of the Byzantine Empire for much of its history. There's a lot to see and as it's on the side of a mountain the walking is hard work. So try and get there early or else the climb to the castle will defeat you due to heat of the day.

If you are in the area of Sparta, Mystras is not to be missed.

“A hard climb”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

A unique site for anyone into history and the relation art / history / religion / culture. In the summer, visit early in the morning. By noon hit the bars, lunch at 2 PM then nap until 6.

“A must see in Peloponnese: a entire Byzantine city”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

Less known than Delphi, Olympia or Sparta because it doesn't belong to the Antique Greece, it is definitely a very nice Byzantine city to discover. Churches are still standing in good shape with magnificently preserved frescoes, the monastery is inhabited and the whole stroll is pleasant all the way to the top because you can really imagine the city. It is only 7km from Sparta.
You need very good shoes and lots of water.
This site is not cluttered by massive tourism, I guess this adds to the charm!
