“Nice, especially during spring”

But the buildings here are really ruins (except the Agia Sophia Monastery).
This is unlike Palamidi fortress in Nafplio, where the buildings are intact.

Even so, the climb up the hill from the lower town is not too arduous (don't know about summer, though) and the views are magnificent.

Since the top of the mountain is covered with tall grass/flowers in spring, you should be careful when you walk among the ruins, s there might be snakes around (actually there was one snake, which was run over by a car in the road from Gefyra to Velies).

“wild beauty”
Reviewed August 2, 2012

monamvasia is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been to greece.the view is magical!! due to the crisis in our country the price for a room to stay in the castle is quite good.but unfortunately i was not so pleased with the price of the food and quality.i would prefer to eat outside the castle.but the small alleys are just perfect!it is a little bit slipery there so be careful what shoes you put on!dont forget your camera!!!!!!!!!!and if it is not so hot go up to agia sofia church to see the hole vilage in front of you....

“I visit Monemvasia every summer because...”
Reviewed September 16, 2011

it is close to the village where my father was born where we also have a small country house. But I never miss going to Monenvasia during the week of the full moon of August, where the moon rises from the Aegean see and the night falls... a majestic scene. A great part of the middle ages castle city is well preserved and worth strolling those narrow streets. There are many new and traditionally decorated coffee places to enjoy a coffee, or a drink. There is a particular bar with a a small terrace facing the castle city and the Aegean Sea where you can enjoy your drink listeninig to soft, jazz music with almost no lighting at all to also help you enjoy the stars - it is a little further up from the main road with the tourist shops and the church. Monemvasia is a place to visit all year around, a whole different feeling during the harsh winter and turbulent sea, and very different during the summer when the sun heats up the stones.
