We stayed in Makryammos for a week in August. We enjoyed this 'life on the beach' resort. We had a great time swimming in the amazing sparkling waters of the sea in front of the hotel. Our bungalow was nice, the food was good and the staff friendly. Thasos is a beautiful green island and we enjoyed using Makryammos occasionally as the basis of various trips to other beaches around the island.

I stayed at this resort in August with my wife and two children aged 3 and 7. The resort is set around five minutes drive from thassos town, or 5 euro in a taxi. You could walk but it would be up a steep hill with no recognised footpath. This would be very demanding on young children in the intense heat. There is a supermarket near the bottom of the hill which you could utilise to stock up on items which are more expensive or not available in the resort shop. The resort is set in what can only be described as idyllic surroundings. It consists of stone bungalows on the hillside surrounded by trees. As mentioned on previous reviews the bungalows at the top of the hill would would result in a more lengthy walk to the beach or facilities. We were lucky and stayed in room 234 which was a classed as a superior room and was a two minute walk to the pool and beach. The main bars and restaurant was about 3-4 minutes away. The view from this room was good with a limited sea view due to the trees. I would imagine that most of the rooms would have worse or similar views due to the trees. I would be surprised if any rooms apart from the beach side rooms had totally clear sea views. The rooms themselves were basic but clean with twin beds, bunkbeds, fridge, tv, and air conditioning. As stated previously these rooms could do with a refurbishment but are more than adequate if luxury is not your main focus. I believe only the superior rooms have bunkbeds with other standard rooms having twin and then additional put up beds. The rooms do not benefit from a separate bedroom. The pool again is not the most luxurious but is fuctional and clean as is directly on the beach. There are umbrellas and sunbeds which are free. We found that the usual routine of people reserving sunbeds with towels was in existence, but you were able to get two beds and an umbrella if you were there before 8.30am. We had no alternative than to place our towels and then go to breakfast. There is a pool bar and a life guard. Drink prices at the bar appear to fluctuate for the same drinks, so be aware of what you should be paying. There are menu with prices at the bar. The beach is clean golden sand with sunbeds and umbrellas at a cost of 7 euro. The sea is clean and clear blue which is shallow and ideal for young children. There is a trampoline in the deeper water for the older kids/adults. The breakfast and evening meal is excellent with a number of choices which are restocked without fail. Restaurant staff are excellent, and you can purchase drinks at the table. There is a main bar and a more intimate sophisticated bar on the hill overlooking the beach/bay. This provides excellent lovely views in the evening as the sunsets. Drinks are expensive in my opinion. 2.20 euro for a coke, 3.60 euro for a beer, and 16 euro for a bottle of rose wine, 7 euro for a cocktail. The shop provides limited items but no coffee, no cans/bottles of coke, no sugar to compliment the kettles in the room. To get round this make use of the supermarket in thassos and stock up on these items at a reduced price. Overall if you are looking for a holiday set in idyllic surroundings with a lovely beach and clean sea which is ideal for children, then this is the place for you. There are peacocks which roam around the grounds and an area which has deers. The rooms are not luxurious but are functional and clean. This may not appeal to people who are looking for the lap of luxury. Request a room lower down the hill to avoid the steep walk to the beach/facilities. Bring some insect repellant and bite cream as there are a number of misquotes and sand flies around. However these minor things do not detract from what was a fantastic holiday experience. Enjoy!!!!!

We spent a week here in mid-August. The main downside was the beds which were too hard and felt like you were sleeping on a divan base with no mattress. The whole site was very attractive and extremely well maintained but was more isolated than it was given the impression of being in the brochure. Our bungalow was quite high up and we'd certainly had enough of climbing steps by the end of the week. We also had problems with wasps at mealtimes and there were plenty of creepy crawlies around to give you a nibble on a regular basis.

Room Tip: Pay extra so that you get a room lower down in the complex.

We spent a week at Makryammos in mid-July and I have to say that it felt like the longest week in my life... Good points first: the area around the reception and restaurant is beautifully landscaped, the beach bar is wonderful and the staff are, largely, quite friendly. Breakfasts and dinners are part of the package and the menu is relatively varied, with fresh ingredients (which seem much appreciated by the swarms of wasps around the tables). I would not recommend the tavern, as the prices there are ridiculous (6 Euro for a single small cheese-stuffed pepper, etc.) and the service is slow, even though it's quite empty.
But back to the insects: apart from the wasps, you get bees crawling in the sand, loads and loads of voracious mosquitoes, centipedes and other strange critters in the bathroom. The bungalows were built in 1965 and left untouched in their sorry state (the management is hoping that some day soon they will gain value as another piece of Hellenic antiquity?) In terms of entertainment, Thassos is definitely a place for families with very young kids or people, whose definition of a holiday is complete peace and quiet. Quite a few of the bars in Limenas (aka Thassos town) were closed last season, so not much going on.
The last straw was the fact that our son got badly stung by a jelly-fish in the sea immediately off the beach and it turned out that there is no doctor in the entire complex. The staff at reception gave me a telephone number but refused to place the call to a doctor in Limenas themselves, as this was "the hotel policy". So I placed a call to the doctor from my mobile and he arrived 40 minutes later to administer a cortisone shot. However, I'm wondering what would happen if any guest of this '4-star' resort had an even more urgent medical problem?
To summarize, Makryammos Bungalows appear nice at first glance, but I would never go back there.

Room Tip: The closer to reception, the better - thus you'll save yourself the steep climb uphill

we stayed in a sea front suite on july for a week
the room was old and no so clean and the furniture dated
the food was average
we had to wake up early in the morning to find a free sunbed and an umbrella
we had to tolerate nouveau rich eastern europeans and turcs who parked their monstreous supercars in front of our door and windows
the beach was you could expect
disapointed for 350 euros half board per night
avoid!!!

Room Tip: don't pay for a seafront suite

We have just returned from the Makryammos Bungalows and had the most wonderful family holiday that I felt compelled to write my first review! If you are looking for a family holiday with something for everyone then this would be the place for you! We travelled with two children aged 8 and 6 and they had the best time. We were unsure how they would cope with the transfers etc but the ferry trip over was enjoyed by us all and only takes 30 minutes.
The main attraction here is the beautiful beach which shelves out very gently so very safe for children who may be unsure about swimming in the sea. It was also nice to see staff on the beach and 2 lifeguards watching the sea and swimming pool which is unusual for Greece. There are peacocks roaming around the properties and deer that live on site that you can hand feed!
Breakfast and dinner is served in a central restaurant with very friendly staff. There is a good choice of food at both mealtimes and we all found something we liked. Lunch can be bought in either the bar area by the beach or there is a taverna on site with much more choice if you get bored of the hotdogs and pizza!
There is a minibus on site which takes you down to town at 10 and 11am but there is no return journey but there is a taxi rank in Thassos town near the police station and i think it was 5 euros back to the hotel. You could walk it but it was too hot for us as its very hilly!
The only negative thing about this resort is that it is quite big and goes up hill, if you had young children or had trouble walking up hill then you would not want a bungalow at the back of the resort. Also make sure you take plently of mosquito spray as they were rife when we there along with wasps and biting flies!
We would certainly return to this resort as we had a great time.

Room Tip: Choose a room nearer to the beach area at the bottom of the resort.

We have stayed two weeks in June at this beautiful resort. My husband, and I loved it and our two children adored it. The bungalows are basic, but very clean and spacious. It is a quiet resort, because every building has 4-6 rooms. The beach is beautiful, with shallow water, there is a nice swimming pool just near the beach and with a mini club for kids. The staff is very friendly. The animals : peacocks and dears were the kids’ favorites. During the afternoons, often the peacocks visited our balcony. If you have also a car/hire one, you can visit other beautiful beaches of Thassos (Marble beach, just 4 km from Makryammos, Aliki, Paradise, Arsanas, Livadi, etc ) and Thassos beautiful villages as Panagia or Kazaviti, Theologos.
