Mavra Volia is one of a series of at least 3 consecutive beaches in the southern part of Chios, next to a small fishing village, Emporios. It takes you between 40 and 50 minutes from the city of Chios to get there; the roads are pretty good. Mavra Volia has a small parking lot, but during peak tourist season it is a big mistake trying to reach that lot. It is much easier to park at the entrance of Emporios and then walk to the beach, something like a quarter mile walk, albeit uphill towards the end.

All beaches are covered by relatively large black volcanic pebbles from a nearby inactive volcano. The water is dark blue, absolutely clean, crystal clear and fresh. Rejuvenation is what you feel when you swim there. If you want calm waters, visit when the wind blows from the north; in south weather, you'll get waves.

Each beach is about 300-400 feet long; the first beach is also wide and beautiful, but most of the times quite crowded; we lay there only after 6PM, when there is still some sun and fewer people.

The second, third and fourth beaches are the big bonus! A trail from the the first beach, no longer than 400 feet, takes you there. The incredible beauty of these beaches is that they are pretty narrow and towered by brown/reddish majestic 300 feet high rocks. The colors create striking contrasts and the feel of isolation is prominent. These beaches are also less crowded and, by 5PM, the sun sets behind the rocks and people start leaving. That's when you should try to stay and experience the oneness of the sea, the beach and the rocks.

The beach is unique for the large volcanic black stones. They are lovely and warm to lie on and the water is crystal clear. It becomes deep very quickly so probably not suitable for young children.
