“Nice beach - but one of many on the island!”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

The black stones get warm in the sun, and the water is super clear which makes for a very relaxing place. Good footwear is essential as the stones can be uncomfortable to walk on and can also be quite warm (if you go late in the day it's not too bad). We didn't swim here but saw people who were, the beach probably gets quite crowded compared to others on the island. If you have been to the south shore of Santorini, you won't be particularly impressed with this beach.

While driving, we found a side road to Elinta Bay on the west side of the island, near Anavatos and Avgonima. Almost no people, great beach, the water gets water as you swim out to the bay. Think of this as a cool alternative - almost certainly less crowded!

“If you like a quiet beach”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

This is another amazing beach on the island of Chios. The thing that makes this one unique is that instead of sand, this one is full of black volcanic rocks, hence the name. There are not many amenities here so you should plan your visit knowing that you are not going to find vendors or restaurants on or near the beach. The water is crystal clear as are all the beaches on Chios.

“Black Bullets ( Mavra Volia )”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

It is unique place in the Mediterranean Sea. Only here is a beach with black stones,
special treated by the sea waves for millions of years, and all have a shape
like gun bullets in dark gey color ( when dry ), black ( when wet ).
The landscape has other colors. Only the beach is black.
Here are two beaches. The first , small , with big bullets uncomfortable, lenght over 6 cm ,
and the second, over the small hill, very big, with all size bullets. From 2 mm to 5 cm.
The feeling to lay over and roll on the bullets, is unique. Try it. Worth all costs.
Try to be there around 1200 , with umbrella, and late in the afternoon
return to your place.
It is not allowed to take bullets with you.
The water is refreshing.

“Beautiful beach”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

It was the first time for me to see a black beach. It's spectacular. You should wear special shoes when walking on the black pebbles, including for entering the sea.
The water is really nice and there are plenty of little fishes swimming next to you. The waves have a special spund, because of the pebbles.
