We went there in a guided tour, and the place is really impressive - I was not expecting much bit really amazed by the richness of the cultural heritage. One may need some explanation or background information though in order to appreciate this place adequately.

This crypt, or catacombs, has a dark, sinister history ; the early Christians, including St Demetrios, were "martyred" here. Over time this space disappeared and it was not until 1917 that it was re-discovered. It now has been converted into an exhibition space, displaying the magnificent fountain and original ciborium, housing the saint's sarcophagus, among other interesting bits and pieces that they unearthed.
Access from the stairs adjacent to the altar.

The church's undergrounds excavations are very interesting. Give you an idea about how it was before the Ottomans turned it into a mosque

I went to the Crypt first when I visited the Church of Agios Demitrios. It is located under the altar, stairs going at the lower level are on the right side of the Altar.

On display are several artifacts found during the early existence of the church. It was a short visit, about 5-7 minutes at most.I spent more time visiting the Church itself and its front ground areas where there are a fountain and a statue/ grave of Agios Demitrios.
