Owner description: Being in the heart of the city’s urban environment and hosted in a historic building of the early 20th century, the War Museum of Thessaloniki has had active presence since the first year of its operation in 2000. It hosts nine permanent exhibitions with over 10,000 historical relics and heirlooms, and is a comprehensive museum of modern Greek history and culture. Visitors have the chance to see a vivid representation of modern Greek history, starting from the pre-Independence War period through to the late 20th century. In this historical frame, the visitor interacts with relics from different nations that took part in all the eras as enemies or allies of the Greek Armed Forces. The museum relics include: original manuscripts, maps, paintings, medals, clothing, flags, weapons and more. Also the Museum staff offer thorough guided tours and help the visitors experience and understand the essence of history and its link to the modern world.

This is an incredible museum that depicts the history of Greece from pre-independence period to the 20th century. The museum items include: original manuscripts, maps, paintings, medals, clothing, flags, weapons and much more. The museum staff offer thorough guided tours and help the visitors experience and understand the essence of Greek history and its link to the modern world. Of particular interest to us was the fantastic collection of arms and the exquisite collection of medals and awards. Our visit to this museum truly brought history to life and we highly recommend a visit.

The War Museum is located almost centrally in Thessaloniki, very close to the Archaeological and Byzantine museums. So if you visit these three museums, you will travel from ancient Greece and through Byzantium to almost recent Greece. The War Museum covers with its relics the period from the revolution of 1821 until the second World War. The building is very nice, as well as the courtyard with the vehicles and the impressive aircraft. The collections are well-organized and very interesting, especially the one with the modern history. Note that the tour-guides are young soldiers, well-informed and kind. I totally recommend a visit to the museum, definetely for the Greeks, but also for foreign tourists, who want to have a detailed overview on the modern history of Greece.

Visiting the War Museum of Thessaloniki I felt like I've traveled in another time. All I've heard from my grandparents, years ago, came back in mind in a suddent. The children found very interesting the military vehicles on the exterior place of the museum and of cource the weapon gallery. Very polite staff. Exceptional behavior from our soldier tour gide. Keep up the good effort guys !!!

You have to work hard to find this place - no one at the Byzantine or Archeological Museums had heard of it - but it is less than a 5 minute walk from both!
Run by the Greek Military - so do not expect sophisticated tourist attention - the guys manning the desk could not speak English - so take your Collins Greek Dictionary with you! Also there is not much English translation of the exhibits, but do not let this put you off. I spent just over an hour there on a Sunday afternoon - and I was the only visitor. s a UK pensioner it cost me One Euro - beat that for price!
Definately go to the War Museum

i could neven imagine the kindness and the proffisionalism of the staff.
The instalation was very tidy, clean, air conditioned and confortable.
There is a well informed guide in English for free.
The ammount of the ticket is very low, only 2 euros.
The collections covered a period from 1821 till nowdays.
It was an approach of the hilstory of all nations with respect and objectivity.
There was also the availability of having a rest during the visit and we could buy in a very low price a sanduich for our childreen and a cup of coffee for us. We were totaly satisfied and I would strogly recomend it for every one. It could be combined with your visit to the archeological and byzantine museums which are almost 200 hundrend meters from the War Museum.
