You need to be in luck and find the tower open, you will need at least an hour or more to see & hear all of the tour, its very intresting and has something for everyones intrests. they charge a small fee but in my opinion it should be more for what they offer. hand held guide in several languages.

The iconic symbol of the city, is a cylindrical stone tower and Museum.
It replaced an old Byzantine fortification which was mentioned around the 12th century. Early illustrations show that it was originally covered by a conical roof like similar towers in the YEDIkULE fortress (in the up-town Thessaloniki). The tower which once guarded the eastern end of the city's sea-walls, was for many years attributed to Venice, to which the Byzantines ceded the city in 1423.
However, later gained a far more sinister reputation when it became an infamous prison and the scene of countless victims of Ottoman torturers and executioners. The tower acquired the name TOWER OF BLOOD or RED TOWER ( KANLIKULE in Turkish).
In 1912, when Greece gained control of the city the tower was whitewashed as a symbolic gesture of cleansing and acquired it's present name and as a symbol as well of Greek sovereignty over Macedonia.
The 27 m height Tower is now a buff colour but has retained the name. It houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city It presents exhibitions covering the city's history through time. ( Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by Cassander -the king of Macedonia- who named the city after his wife, the sister of Alexander the Great. " First after the First " as Byzantine writers called Thessaloniki, there were periods when the city was the second most important after Constantinople -Istanbul. The Tower was for centuries part of the walls of the old city and separated the Jewish quarter of the city from the the cemeteries of the Muslims and the Jews.)
It definitely worth a visit ( Tue to Sun 8.30am - 3.00pm CLOSED ON MON & BANK HOLIDAYS )
Visitors can also get great views of the city from the top floor of the Tower.
