Owner description: The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki was founded to honor the rich and creative Sephardic heritage as it evolved in the city of Thessaloniki. On the ground level are monumental stones and inscriptions that were once found in the great Jewish necropolis that lay to the east of the city walls. Accompanying these stones are a series of photographs showing the cemetery and visitors as it was in 1914.Central to the first floor is a narrative history of the Jewish presence in Thessaloniki from the 3rd century BCE until the Second World War. A separate exhibit focuses on the Shoah, as it affected the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki. The majority of the community - some 49,000 persons - was systematically deported to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen where most of them perished.A research and documentation center operates within the premises, which aims to document and digitize archival documents from the Museum's own collection as well as archival material from other sources, thus creating a database accessible to visitors. The Museum provides special educational programs for schools.

“Two interesting hours”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2012

I found out a number of interesting things about the Jewish presence in Salonica. It is a small space and the artifacts are not numerous enough. More information could be presented in electronic form. A work in progress...

Very informative and well done, a must trip. It really explains Thessaloniki's Jewish heritage which is so often overlooked.

“Heritage visit in a "city of ghosts"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2012 via mobile

Small but well documented museum about a community which was counting at times till 80% of the local population. Not too big, nor too "shocking", but will definitely give you the feeling and emotions - that one should experience while visiting this city nicknamed "the mother of Israel" or "Jerusalem of the Balkans".
A small tour to understand the life of a major Jewish capital - in the past.

“tremendous potential but does not come through”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2012

For a city and region with so much former Jewish history the museum should reflect more. Very weak on Hebrew printing and publishing which thrived there for some three centuries. Better explanations required on the former cemetery that was destroyed. Not enough information on kehillot -- communities -- in the city or throughout northern Greece. Golden, educational oppurtunity not realized.
