“Pleasant and quiet”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

The hotel is about an hours drive from the airport, and transfers were in a rather beaten up coach!
We were dropped at the end of the dusty drive, George the owner manically met every one and showed all to their rooms. Our room was on the top floor with a view of the sea through the trees, was well laid out and was spotlessly clean. The bath room was small, the shower was a tad cramped but
All the rooms had a full size fridge, kettle, cups and glasses, there was also a safe €3/4 per day, and air con €5 per day should you want them.
The pool area is lovely with plenty of sun beds, breakfast is served in the bar area and is a lack lustre continental affair...with a hot option daily....however this was put out at 8am with no heat source! Food is available all day, and is reasonably priced and presented.
Kalithea is about 5/10 mins walk but lacks atmosphere, we were told it was purpose built and caters for the Russian and Ukrainian holiday makers..with numerous fur shops, Afitos is around 20/30 mins walk and has a much nicer feel to it.. A cab fare back will set you back €5.
Private security guards were evident every evening.
The hotel is exclusively used by Thompson holidays, so all it's likely that all the residents are Brits..we were extremely lucky everyone was lovely.. very friendly. if you want a quiet week away in the sun it's a nice place to chill, if you prefer a more Greek flavoured holiday perhaps this wont be for you.
The rep called every day, selling day trips which I felt were expensive.
All in all it's a nice clean hotel, and a grand place to just chill out.

Room Tip: 306 sea view.

This was our 2nd visit to Kalithea, first visit was the Nostos, which was glad we did not go there again. But looking at the Country Inn, this ticked all the boxes for us. Beautiful hotel, designed by George, with attention to decor & detail, in a fabulour location. It's the sort of hotel that if you could move it with you to other destinations it would be brilliant. Other reviewers have gone over the breakfast side, so won't touch on that, but you can buy food/drinks at the large supermarket, & eat on your balcony, which I did some days, due to not being a early riser. And the view from our room (207) really stunning, some days we even ate lunch on there. I chatted to George regarding the fixed umbrella's, he is actually having some more made to go with all the sun beds. On the food side lunch/evening meals, if you ask if you want it done differently, it is done, no problem. I didn't see inside the rooms 101-104, but one guests I spoke to who were on their balcony said it was fine, so not sure what the grumps are on about.Whilst we were there, we met some really lovely people, didn't catch everyone's name, but one couple were especially great and that was Ron & Clare, & also John & his lovely wife (didn't get her name) who used to help get out of the pool, due to me having a bad back. There were a lot of regular's who go back every year, so that is a good testiment. if we were going back to Halkidiki again we would most definitely book the Country Inn, Sadly, not sure if we will go abroad via plane, absolute nightmare at Gatwick on return journey, spoilt our holiday.
I mentioned the Supermarket in Kalithea, this shop has everything, so if you didn't want to take your toiletries with, you can buy them there, I even brought some things to brings home as you can't buy them here. Also at the Country Inn there is a clothes dryer, I'm going to see if I can buy one here, So what are you waiting for, book this hotel......From Fran & Jeff

Room Tip: Definitely book the two higher floors, if you have to pay a supplement, do it, for the views, especi...

Just come back from the Country Inn last week and I have to say what are all these negatives about. Just forget about what people have said about rooms 101 through to 104 because to tell the truth these have the best views looking out to the sea through the pine trees. These rooms are very well laid out and are cool enough not to worry about the air conditioning. We had room 101.
George welcomed us to the hotel and took our bags down to the room and left us to get on with it.We knew the Thomson meeting was the next day for all information but we were able to get the safe key when we arrived.
The pool and bar area are lovely and the staff cannot do enough for you. Artemis looked after us during the day until Nikos took over from 4pm and probably the best bar man you will ever find.
They were both very professional and polite and had total regard for the customers and definitely service with a smile.
Room cleaned every day so well worth the tip.
The sun beds are a plenty with at least 2 per room so no need to put towels down. After all we are British!
All in all this was a most fantastic week made very comfortable by the staff and surroundings.
Top marks from us George and keep up the good work.

Room Tip: All rooms are great but don't worry about being put in the dungeon as one reviewer has said.

When we arrived,George, the owner, dumped our bags in the room an just disappeared without showing us how too plug the fridge in or where too get safety deposit key etc.(Only spoke once too us the rest of the holiday, which I will mention later). Breakfast was standard continental fare but, most days they did try something hot however,If you were not up at 8am,there was nothing too keep it warm.Cold Bacon,Beans & sausages, not my cup of tea.when trying too order a simple ham & tomato sandwich this seemed too complicated for the young girl serving,I ended up with ham and tomato on a plate???The so called barbecue was just awful,we watched as food was put out on no heat for over 10 mins, cold chips, pork etc, absolutely disgusting which even the rep Mark, agreed & said it had been alright last week, that helped 10 euros each.(this was the second time George spoke too us,saying the food was ready)we left & got some food in Kallithea 5mins down the road. The apartments were dark & hot water was slow in coming. We spend most of our time in Athios 20mins away, which is a lovely place. We also had Ants all over us in the bedroom.Poor service & will never go here again.

We booked Country Inn after reading so many excellent reviews.

First the negatives:

On arrival we were met by George and delivered to room 101 - down the stairs to what was effectively a room built partly underground. We had asked for a higher floor room but were told we had not paid for that (we weren't made aware of this by Thomson) and that the hotel was full. George then left us, giving us no further information about the hotel. There was also a very musty/damp smell in the room, and outside by the door was evidence of damp (flaking paint). The towels (located in the wardrobe) felt quite damp. On reporting these points to George I was told that nobody had mentioned this before (I doubt this very much on reading 'Romanby Ramblers' review), but we were given fresh, dry towels. The room was dark (the only natural light was from the French doors), and sitting on the terrace (aka the dungeon) we were at eye level with the grass. On the plus side, we saved ourselves 42 euros as due to the fact there was no sunshine on our room/terrace at any point during the day we did not need to use the air conditioning.

Breakfast was also rather disappointing. Do you really want weak orange squash to start the day? In a country with so much fresh fruit the only fruit available was tinned peaches. There was also sliced bread, a choice of 3 cereals, processed ham and cheese, boiled eggs, Greek yogurt and cake. The same each day. But there was plenty of tea or coffee available.

Now the positives:

The hotel is set well away from the road so was very quiet, although there is a hotel either side of Country Inn. The pool, gardens and bar areas were very well looked after and were just as in the brochure. The rooms were kept very clean with fresh bedding and towels every day. There are plenty of sunbeds - a pair for each room (so why the need for some people to 'bag a bed' before 8 in the morning?) There are lovely views of the sea through the trees and the path to the beach is a very pleasant walk - as long as you are reasonably fit as some of the 'steps' are quite steep.

The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. We went to the hotel's BBQ night which was very good value. I do not eat meat and they gave me an excellent alternative.

There is a supermarket on the edge of Kalithea (where you can buy freshly squeezed orange juice!) and milk, beer etc that you can keep in the full size fridge in the room (very useful). There is also an excellent bakery a bit further on (Bread & Breakfast) with lovely pastries, cakes and ice cream. Afitos is a much more traditional village in the other direction with plenty of choices of restaurants and tavernas.

All in all we spent a very relaxing week at Country Inn and would consider a return visit if guaranteed an upstairs room.

Room Tip: Do NOT book rooms 101 to 104

In our opinion this is a great base if you just wish to chill out and relax. Kalithea town is a 10 minute walk to the left and Athitos approx 25 minute walk to the right from the hotel. There isn't a great deal round the area - but to be honest that wasn't what we were looking for - if you do wish to explore then this probably isn't the right holiday for you.

Things to note or take with you if you are going any time soon:
1) Take mosquito plug in and spray - we forgot to pack them and we were eaten (no fault to hotel here just one of those things)
2) Ask for upper rooms (we were in 307 and had a lovely room) but I know others were less fortunate. Although in my opinion I don't go on holiday to spend it in a room.
3) The path up and down to the beach is as others have said - not the best and very steep. You can use the road down to the beach in Kalithea but it is still very steep. For those with any walking difficulties you will struggle as I know others did who stayed here.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is all English, not sure why Thomson only allow the English to stay here but it is what it is. The Thomson rep is new and if like us you make it down to the pool bar for your welcome meeting at 11.30am you may find she has already finished and won't tell you anything mainly because she doesn't know. One thing to note although our first week at the hotel there was no claiming sun beds with towels, the second week that all changed and the beds with shade by the pool were all gone by 7am. Although there is a note to say not to do this, I have never yet seen a hotel enforce it, which is a shame as it caused quite a lot of hostility to those that came in the second week and if I am honest we noticed it was mostly those returning as been many times previously that were the problem.

The breakfast is not brilliant but you can manage - there are not many options, I stuck mostly to cereal whilst my husband opted for cheese, ham on toast with a boiled egg. The coffee machine that arrived in our first week was a much welcome addition although could be temperamental which just added to our amusement in the morning and was a standing joke between us and the lady serving and helping out.

The only thing I would say to George is you need a few more sunbeds with shade as there are not enough to go around and that would help with the claiming of beds in the morning.

Just want to say a huge thank you to George and Nickos for a fab time and making us both feel very welcome.

All in all we had a great relaxing holiday and enjoyed our stay here. Would we go back - probably not as we would like to see more and do more than there is to offer here. But if the hotel were in a different location we would be back in a shot.

Room Tip: We had 307 and thought it was a great room.

Well where do we start. One of the main reasons we booked this hotel was the good reviews on Tripadvisor and the 99% good rating from Thomson Holidays. Unfortunately our experience didn't match our expectations which is unusual as Tripadvisor is usually a good barometer.

On the positive side the hotel is small and friendly with only 16 rooms. The staff speak English and are friendly and helpful. The location is a pleasant 10 minute stroll from Kallithea and a half-hour walk from Afitos. The general standard of care and maintenance were fine and the bar/cafe well stocked with a reasonable choice of meals.

Most peoples' memories are influenced by their room and we were seriously let down. Having asked for a ground floor room due to a difficulty with stairs and the tour operator, Thomson Holidays, having rung the hotel to reinforce the request, we were allocated what was classed as a ground floor room which turned out to be 10 stairs underground. All four ground floor rooms, 101, 102, 103 and 104, were similarly underground. The balcony had a 3' wall at the front which was on grass level, ideal for insects to join us, and one side had a 4'6" wall with flora on top, the other side joined the room next door. The result is that there was no natural light into the room so the electric light was always on and the only sunlight on the patio was for odd minutes in the morning when light glinted through the huge pine trees at the end of the lawn blocking the view to the sea.If that wasn't enough the room always had a musty smell. We expressed our displeasure to the manager but were told the hotel was full and the only option was to ask another guest to change which was really a non-starter.We did discover that the next floor up had only 7 stairs to that level.
We were not the only people who asking for a ground floor room were suprised they were underground. We christened these rooms 'The Bunker
'
All rooms had a kettle which was useful because we could not get warm water in the morning despite leaving the hot tap running for an age so the only way to get a warm morning wash was to use water from the kettle and a shower was impossible.

We hadn't realised that the hotel is used wholly by Thomson guests so changeover day is only on a Monday, all the guests are English and the staff speak English all the time so the feel was 'English in the sun' rather than traditional Greek.

The only communal public facilities are the pool area and the poolside bar/cafe. The bar is open on three sides and faces the accommodation block. There are plastic sides which were used on a couple of rainy periods but they still let a draft in. The bar is open till midnight so, if you retire earlier, the room patio door can't be left ajar on the tilt mechanism due to noise pollution from the bar and on a couple of occasions, the entertainer from the adjacent hotel. We did not have a window. Air conditioning was available at a supplement but for 6 euros a day this was exorbitant.

On a similar vein, a safe was available for 3 euros a day. It was fixed in a small cupboard and I discovered on the last day that the cupboard could be picked up and carried away!

Breakfasts were taken in the bar/cafe. Whilst breakfasts were advertised as 'continental' I couldn't see many continentals eating plastic cheese, ham and bread for toast. There was Greek yoghurt and tinned peaches every day. With so much fruit around there was no fresh fruit on offer. The only thing that changed was a 'hot' dish, perhaps sausages, bacon or scrambled egg. Unfortunately this was served in a dish without anything to keep it warm and unless you were there when it was put out it was warm at the best and cold at the worst - best avoided.

If you want a bit of England abroad then this hotel could be for you. If you want a piece of Greece we would recommend you look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Avoid 101, 102, 103 and 104, all below ground
