“Snorkeling in Zakynthos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2009

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful snorkeling holiday in Zakynthos. However, we would like to provide a few tips for future travelers. These tips should be taken with the caveats that we were visiting Zakynthos in June and there was very unusual weather in that it was a bit cloudy and rainy. In addition, my wife and I are quite enthusiastic snorkelers and can happily spend many hours in the water. With that information in mind, the Keri area is not the best for snorkeling because it seems to experience a bit of a rain shadow effect. That means that the west side of the island was often cold and cloudy, whereas the east side was sunny and warm. In addition, the winds were blowing in from the west, making the ocean very rough, while the east side was calm. The snorkeling around the Blue Caves is some of the best that we have ever experienced and we highly recommend it. The only drawback is that you have to constantly watch out for the tour boats. The area north of Agios Nikolas is absolutely beautiful and not at all crowded. We found that the coastline around Vassilikos was beautiful, but the snorkeling was disappointing. The snorkeling at Keri is OK, but nothing spectacular. If you do snorkel there, a tip is to snorkel around the island of Marathonisi. It took us ~1.5 hours and was a really nice swim. Overall, we had a fantastic visit and highly recommend the island.

“Zante/Zakynthos Greece”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2009

The island has something for everyone. Busy nightlife in Laganas and quieter bars and clubs in other resorts. We hired scooters and a quad bike to tour the island (you can go around it in a day) and there are breath-stealing scenes around every corner.
The boat trip with Mythos tours (22 euros, 9.30am - 6pm) was worth every cent and was a highlight but the waterpark was a little disappointing. Don't miss Shipwreck Cove (the sea really is that colour!), viewed either from the sea or from the 750ft viewing platform!
The roads are dreadful (but fun) and signposts are relaxed (there weren't many) but you can't really get lost anyway! By hiring our own transport we found loads of little beaches along the beautiful coast and taverna's in the mountains that were off the beaten track.
Zante Town is pretty but be aware that shops close from 1-6pm nearly every day - the other resorts are open all day.
The food is fabulous, fresh and reasonably priced and the local beer (Mythos or Alpha), served in a frozen glass goes down a treat in 40 degree heat.

“great cheap fun!!!”

I have been to Zante two years running, and both times had a wicked time. It is a beautiful island with lots to do. the night life is hectic with many clubs usually new only a few clubs were still there when i went the second year!!!!! if you are not into clubbing then zante then dont go july-august as this is full of Uni students and other clubbers. The locals are lovely. At night time you do see street sellers sometimes with kids and babies but if you just walk past they will live you alone. I plan to go back to Zante next year. Food is brilliant with a mix of traditonal greek and good old english although i never tried the english food. The beacj is great but the sun loungers cost you get to know the people on the beach front shops and they will look after you.

“idilic island of unspoilt beauty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2009

A destination i can not recomend enough!! Stayed in a small hilly town called Agios Leon in a beautiful 3 bedroom villa by James Villas. Hire car is esential for this island but so worth it as the drive through he hilly scenic island is one the best you will experience. Swim with the loggerhead turtles, visit the ship wreck. Visit to Porto Illuminos have a swim to build up an appitite as the resturant offers excelent authentic greek food and the water is actually torquise you won't believe it untill you see it!! Visit the port with its beautiful shops and clif top bars were all the beautifl people go to dance the night away of even take the ferry to main land greece, book a tour to Olimpia it is worth the money such amazing history. Keri offers the most spetacular sunsets and views of the whole . My advise woild be to stay away from the tackey resorts of Argassi and Laganas unless drunken skantly clad people loud discos and burgerbars are your thing. Take a drive into the hills and around all of its beautiful beaches and live the true greek lifestyle as the greeks do, enjoy ; )

“Good spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2008

Zakynthos is a lovely place for a sun holiday, we went in Early September and it was quiet enough but it was suitable for us as 6 couples. It does seem to be mostly couples and we were told it was quieter over there than other years. Its more suited to a relaxing holiday but having said that we were in Kalamaki and didnt venture further afield but I think Laganas is meant to be very lively, more bright lights and louder pubs. I really enjoyed my stay in Kalamaki though and the people over there are just so nice and helpful and plesant. I would go back again but like I said its quiet enough over there. The food portions though are crazy, there was enough to feed 2 people if not 3 in a dinner for 1. It would nearly put you off. We asked and the waiter said this was usually the sizes even though they are all thin over there. Again having said that the food is lovely. Between 6 of us, not one of us got a meal we didnt like. There is also a waterpark which is good but small enough but looks like they could be expanding it. Overall, We all had a great holiday and would recommend going.
