This hotel offers the best value for money accomodation for budget travellers. Excellent location, decent cleanliness, great food, even greater coctails and most important a wonderful host.
We highly recommend this hotel.

Thank you Laerti :)

My first trip to Greece and what a lovely first visit arriving home yesterday.

Vic (originally from Wolverhampton though lives on the Island) the rep must be mentioned as he collected us and gave us a very informative/historical introduction to Nidris. Very helpful.

Sand Hotel offered basic accomodation though all required for a peaceful holiday. Beds were comfortable, towels, bedding, kettle, hairdryer and very basic self catering items provided. We were in the room above the pool table; yes the pool table was noisy though its only used mid day...when we were just getting out of bed! :) The pool was lovely - the views were fantasic around and it was peaceful with little noise. Plenty of loungers provided and parasols. Food and drink available throughout with a nice clean and bar and the food was very, very good...worth trying! We ate most of our meals on the harbour and didnt have a meal at the hotel till the day before we left - wish we ate there most dinner times now! The hotel is quite echoey with marble floors; the worst sound for me was people if slappy flip flops up and down the stairs. If you like a lie-in, may be worth taking ear plugs. Aircon provided at 40 Euros a week, safe provided for 10 euros - both worth it. Mosquito blinds are at the door and window and MUST be left down.

I am covered in Mozzy bites - they seem to like me! I wore a repellent and also have bite relief cream, still itching after 4 days! Never been bitten before on previous vacations. Wish I bought some mozzy cream at the pharmasist and some prope hardcore meds at the pharmasist as Vic advised. really is worth getting some whilst you are there as the stuff from Boots in Uk just i'snt strong enough.

Leartus was a great host; very proud of his hotel, very helpful and much more talkative at the bar with some funny stories at the end of an evening. He is very busy in the day and is also very focused to his role managing the hotel. He's not keen on people drinking and eating food bought from the supermarket around the hotel; to be honest his pricing is pretty good so you honestly dont need to; take a break from the cooking and preparing sarnies cus his prices are good. 2.50 euros for a bottle of Amstel for example! Alot cheaper than home!

We always had a drink around the bar when coming in from an evening at around 1.30am ... some nice banter around the bar and you have a few local characters, long stayers or returning customers there too which is nice. Pedro and John :)

The location is ideal with a short walk through a quaint high street of shops, restaurants and bars towards the harbour. A two minute walk over the road took you to a pebbled beach with amazingly clear water resembling more of a river. Many many places to eat though my personal favorite was the Apollon which is on the harbour. It was the only place where I found that th service was quick yet they didnt try and serve you a main whilst you are still eating a starter! When you needed someone they were there. others restaurants we very slow and could become a little frusting. Drag you in then you wait 10 mins for a drink and up to 30 mins for a meal... Apollon look after you and we received 4 free drinks and 2 puddings :) Food is on the lower price scale along the harbour too yet very very nice! try the Sea Bass .. yummy!

There is a small bar halfway along the harbour too, called something like Pixeri (cant really see name from outside and kept forgetying to check) white whicker seats and sofas with sky TV above the bar. really nice cocktails and beer good price. there is also a bar next door with black and white cushions though never went there.

Excursions: Best trip by far; Sand and Stars...Steve the Cornish New Zeland host was a great storyteller. You take a boat accross to an island and he tells stories of the Island and of the stars..very interesting ..honestly. Nice BBQ and as much drink as you want on the beach including alcohol. This was 40 euros per adult though worth it.

Fun in the Sun excusrion was on a Greek ship... we went on a Sunday and the trip was 'sold to us' as 'as much beer and food you want' at 40 euros each. this is a full day excursion. We had free food and drink only during the 1 hour BBQ on the beech. There is a bar on the boat though this is not free....so take drink with you. There was English translation on the boat though very Greek 0 this may be as we went on a Sunday?!? We went to visit a cave a jump in, sailed around Islands and visited 2 - if you are interested in the Onassis family or Jacky Kennedy this is a good one for you. It was a nice day out, not sure whether worth 40 euros though it was a full day out - take some breakfast and drink with you!

The 15 euro trip to the town wasnt really worth it. the food wasnt anywhere near the quality of the Harbour at Nidris, the staff were not as friendly and not particularly welcoming. The shops were the same as in Nidris, just a few more of them and the square where the food and drink was pretty expensive was tiny and kids just ran round in the middle. Not much at all and it actually wasted a night where we could have had a nice time back in Nidris on the Harbour.

We didnt have the BBQ at the hotel....not enough people wanted to go which was dissapointing. My advice to Leartus here would be to take a deposit of 8 euros off people who say they want to go...people backed down and it was annoying. Some moaned about the price of 18 euros ... a meal in a restaurant is approx 15 euro per head for a started and main. The drinks at the bar are cheap and according to others who went whilst we were there, learytus is very entertaining! He also provides free shots so its a fun party eating as much as you want..he is a good chef... so 18 euros is not bad at all.

We will be returning though there is an 'if'....after an extremely bad experience with TorAir airline returning to the UK we would not be returning via that airline. If Olympic Holidays moved to another airline then we certainly would.

Olympic really need to address the airline situation as they will start loosing custom which is a shame for both Olympic and Leartus.

Leartus; you are a very good host and I wish you every success for you and your hotel. You are a hard working man and deserve good luck :)

Jen and Keith (Keith who laughs loud at the bar at night)

Just returned from a fantastic two weeks at The Sands hotel, where we could not have asked for a better, friendlier welcome and service. The Sands is ideally situated right opposite the beach on the slightly quieter end of Nidri although within easy reach of all the Taverners and harbour and of course the shops. The host Laertis is a local man with a wealth of information about the Island (although I still don't believe it was 3km and a 40 minute walk to the Waterfalls) and breakfasts, and all food we ate at the Sands was very good and fresh in particular Tuna Salad made with Laertis home made sauce was to just the best. Tuesday night is BBQ night and as the board says diffinitely not to be missed with so much lovely homemade food and shots, the Greek dancing begins and thats certainly not to be missed. We are already thinking when we can return.

Room Tip: We think we had the best rooms on the ground floor at the rear, quiet & shady in mornings

I have travelled to many destinations within Greece and all over Europe, and this has stayed my favourite Island and Hotel for more than 10 years.

Just returned from a one week stay at The Sands Hotel, and I have never been so depressed after a holiday. I always think the post holiday blues is relative to the good time had while there, and we had a great holiday! Make no mistake though, you need to bring money with you to make the most of it, and to avoid trying to boil eggs in the kettle and such, but with main meals very cheap (about 8 euros per person for a meat course) along with fantastic local wines (also cheap!), it doesn't cost much to have a great time.

Nidri and the Island of Lefkada is so naturally beautiful and green. Although I have experienced better sandy beaches elsewhere, I am still humbled by the amazing scenery, even without leaving the room! I am also always humbled by the locals who are so typically Greek and proud. I have Greek Cypriot in-law family members, and they are emotionally close to each other, but can be loud! If you see Greeks shouting at each other, it is passionate and rarely with malice. Call it a cultural difference!

This is definitely a Hotel style accommodation with limited self catering facilities as suggested by the name. I personally see no point in going to the supermarket to create average meals for a “nice night in” not much cheaper than you can buy in any restaurant nearby, so this is right up my street. The facilities for cooking are good as kitchenette type apartments go, but this is not the place to eat in with some good restaurants nearby (within 5 mins walk), and good food and service available downstairs in the hotel.

Laertis is the best host ever, doing everything so well, and makes you feel so welcome. This was our third time here, and would definitely return and recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to relax and be wowed by the surroundings. The village of Nidri has changed a little over the years, but not too much due to the limited airport capacity supplying the resort with holiday makers. Vic is also one of the greatest reps I have ever met. A great character who knows so much having lived there years, and will always try very hard for you.

There is a club nearby, but can barely be heard unless you are front facing with the doors wide open. I am a light sleeper, and this never bothered me at all. It faces out to the sea, so there is nothing for the sound to bounce off of.

This place is great, and I will be returning every year if possible. All holidays I have ever been on have been well researched or on recommendation, but none come close as an overall experience. A definite must if you love Greece, and to be honest, I always wish I could stay much longer!!

Book and enjoy!

Just returned fron the Sands, our first time will not be the last. We had a lovely time, great position, opposite the beach, 10 minutes to the port and tavernas. The room was very clean and basic, we had a hairdryer and plenty of storage. The owner works hard he never stops, he comes over as a bit grumpy but he is ok. The bbq was fun, we wish he had it on Saturday as we made so many friends it would have been nice to meet them earlier on in the holiday. The owner took us clubbing he bought us all a drink, we had a great night. some of us got home at about 6. He still was on duty at 8.30 and finished in the earlt hours of the next morning.

We went on a few trips, brilliant, the Christina is worth the money £40, Also the Ioanian cruise £10 for the day. We did the sunset and stars, shame it was cloudy, still had a good time. Nidri is a delightful place, the harbour is alway alive.

Most people were friendly at the hotel, one or two 'special' people, they really should have gone to a villa. Vic the rep is a nice guy, very interesting.

My only criticism is £40 for the ac. You need it in July, but a bit pricey. The food in the hotel was good and resonable. Always a sunbed available.

We will return.

Room Tip: room 206 or 306 private balcony

This hotel is on the outskirts of Nidri, meaning it's in a quieter part of the resort, but there is a fairly noisy bar across the busy road so if you are a light sleeper I'd recommend you request a room at the back of the hotel. You won't have the sea view but you will at least sleep. Otherwise bring some ear plugs with you! I'd highly recommend attending the hotel BBQ. Leartis lays on an incredible spread of fabulous food. The rooms are clean and comfortable with plenty of storage space but if you are planning on cooking for yourself you may find the equipment lacking. Overall one of the best hotels of this class that we have stayed at.

Room Tip: Rooms at front of hotel may be subject to noise from bar opposite hotel and from the busy road. Pat...

In a quieter part of Nidri - Sands is definitely 2 Star. None of the crockery matched and the equipment generally was basic. The thing I really didn't like was the shared balconies which is not made clear in the booking info. The pool area is pleasant enough though quite cramped. Leartis the owner is nice when you are buying drinks/food but does seem off-hand the rest of the time. The Olympic rep 'Vic' was knowledgable about the island and very willing to help. Nidri generally was very scruffy and was suffering from a lack of visitors. Restaurants on the habour were trying too hard to be something they aren't. Try the Pinewood ,near Sands hotel, and also Tom's nearer to town for lovely meals right by the sea. A full day on 'The Christina' sail ship was £40 but an excellent trip with lots of stops to swim in quiet coves. All in all I'll probably not go back but pleasant enough for a week chilling out!
