“Yet another great holiday at Maria Anna!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

Had to respond to HotAirships recent review and to the comments. 1. We manage the walk to and from the beach without being 'fit hikers' - we're in our 50's!. ". 2. Every room I've stayed in in Greece has had a rough artex finish - the hotel decor is on a par with any Greek standard range hotel. I have never had a problem with paint flaking into my 'G & T' at the Maria Anna! 3.The bathrooms are in the process of being updated, although they are not exactly falling to bits! Due to the recession, repairs have to made when cash is available. 4. In all the years that I've stayed at the hotel I have never smelt anything other than the wonderful aromas of cooking from the kitchen. 5. Most Greek hotels serve simple continental breakfasts, but the Maria Anna goes that little bit further and offers fresh eggs served in a choice of ways - you can never please everyone though, can you? 6. I don't understand how giving a free meal to guests can be a 'ruse' - no-one is forced to have the free meal or to stay on and spend money at the bar; it is simply the hotels way of welcoming guests and to help break the ice between them. I cannot believe for one moment that the same moussaka was being served a week later - the hotel staff are very proud of their food and of its quality. 7. Yes, Jenny has been working very hard at the hotel. What a strange thing to complain about?!...you want to see someone else's face for a change! Perhaps she should spend some her hard earned money employing another staff member for you to look at? Gregori and Peter are usually very friendly, happy people, they always have a friendly word and smile - they also work extremely hard. 8. The hotel is owned by Jenny and Gregori - Olympic have a contract with the hotel and are therefore the ones who sell the rooms. 9. The guests at the Maria Anna are not 'prisoners' and actually resent being labelled as such! Personally, when there, we use our feet or local buses as we do not drive, returning to the hotel when we wish to. We are more than happy with the choice of restaurants available in the area that are within walking distance.By thw way, it quite clearly states on Trip Advisor reviews that a car is recommended, perhaps HotAirship should have read that first! 10. We have never had a problem finding an available sunbed by the pool, no matter what time we go there. 11. This mention of 'derelict buildings' - would that be the shop and restaurant that recently closed nearby? I remind you again that Greece is in the middle of a massive recession - closures cannot be controlled by the Maria Anna! 10. As to the comment about a 'gauntlet of establishments all clamouring for tourists' Euro's' - ??? these people own businesses and of course want you to spend your money; its called commerce and its how trade works. The words 'gauntlet' and 'clamouring' are excessive - it is a village street, and customers go into the shops; the vendors do not come out trying to persuade people into their shops, as they do in some countries. I think that I have managed to cover all of the areas where I feel that HotAirship has made inaccurate and pedantic remarks. I have once again returned from a wonderful 2 weeks at the Maria Anna, and will continue to return to my island paradise each year.

Room Tip: Most rooms are seaview, but the mountain view is lovely. Olympic actually allocate the rooms, not th...

I had the good fortune to visit this hotel a few year's ago with my husband. We joined my brother and his wife who go to this hotel for two weeks every July. I know why they return year on year, as it is one of the most friendly, family run hotels I have ever had the good fortune to stay at. The breakfasts were worth getting up for, and the food was freshly prepared and plentiful. The pool BBQs were excellent and I found the food was prepared to a very high standard. The ensuing quiz night was good fun and a chance to meet with other guests. The family and staff at the hotel were always polite and attentive and made us feel at home. Their son, in particular was very polite, not to mention easy on the eye! All in all, the hotel and resort matched the description in the brochure, but more than that, it has a charm all of its own, which makes me envious every time my lovely sister-in-law and brother return to this delightful hotel. I would highly recommend it to anyone who like the Greek Isles and in particular, Kefalonia.

I've recently just returned from a great holiday at the Maria Anna Hotel. The Hotel is a small, family-run Hotel typical of the kind of acccomadation one finds all over Greece, with warm and welcoming staff, clean rooms and clean bed linen. When booking this hotel, perhaps it's worth bearing in mind that it is only a two-star accomadation and that essentially you will get what you pay for. 'Average' then, is perhaps a fair assesment of the accomadation quality, but when considered within the larger context of the beautiful hill-top resort of Lourdas, I would suggest that the Maria Anna Hotel offers the perfect opportunity for an 'above average' holiday experience!

This is our 5 th year at Maria- Anna. Every year it just gets better and harder to leave. It is a family run hotel Jenny, gregory, their lovely son Peter together with George, Dora and nicos are the most friendly people and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean by Dora who works hard and has very high standards and is totally trustworthy. The food at lunchtime is beautiful, cheap and produced is an impeccably clean kitchen. BBQ night is a lovely night hosted by lovely Jenny and Gregory again they are so happy to make their customers stay with them a wonderful experience. We are happy to put our names to this comment and would urge you the reader of this opinion and to disregard the bad comment entered by the anonymous hot air balloon who has written a very untrue, distorted and damaging bad comment. We will return again next year like so many others, surely this is evidence enough for the trip advisor readers. Signed roy and bridget

First visit to Kefalonia, travelling as two middle aged couples and had a wonderful holiday staying at this very friendly and welcoming hotel. The family and staff work extremely hard to provide a warm welcome and provide an excellent service (especially Jenni). The accommodation is basic but clean, food was good and reasonably priced and just what we had expected of this type of accommodation. The welcome meal on Monday and Thursday barbecue were very good and is a good way to get to know everyone, I can recommend the gilthead bream done on the BBQ and the Cephalonian pie is very tasty. Must give a mention about Morris the tiny cat; everyone fell in love with him and wanted to take him home - I'm sure he will be mentioned in further reviews. The views from this location are stunning the only negative location is the steep access to the hotel and beaches, which really affect the calf muscles!! There are a few tavernas and supermarkets in close proximity to the hotel and a few to choose from down at Lourdas beach. Had lovely meals at Olive Lounge, Casa de Mer and Blue Sea as well as excellent bar snacks at the Maria Anna.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and can understand why people return both to the island and to this hotel.

Room Tip: Sea view on 2nd floor are stunning.

I totally agree with Hotairship that Kefalonia is a truly beautiful island. But that is the only thing i will agree with. In fact i was so disturbed by this review, i felt i had to add a review of my own. Firstly the walk to the beach,if two slightly overweight 50 year olds can do it ,anyone can!,as for walking back taxis are easily found and affordable.
the simplicity of the rooms is very endearing and typically greek ,all rooms have air con at a very reasonable price, large fridges and tea making facilities which is very rare in a bed and breakfast set up..The bathrooms Were spacious and very adequate for our needs, and the views from the balconys were amazing..
.we found every part of the hotel spotless, with very high standards of cleaning..We thought the cleaner dora was exceptional and always left our room immaculate.
The breakfasts Were wonderful with plenty of choice, cereal, greek yogurt, toast and freshly made eggs..
The owners jenny and gregory are wonderful people and very genourous, there are not many hotels that put on a free meal for their guests!! and gregorys mousaka was the best on the island!

We have been to Kefalonia twelve times. the reason we return speaks for itself in the fact we have visited so many times. Yes, we go to other places but this is by far the most beautiful, friendly and relaxing place we have ever found. We know we are not alone in our feelings, as we continually meet other 'repeaters' (as the Olympic Team call us), and also first timers say they feel that they will return. There is something very magical about this island, and it was on our visit this year that a remark was made by a couple at the Maria-Anna which we completely agree with. People don't return to Kefalonia, "The Island draws you back"
The Maria-Anna is NOT run by Olympic, this a very erroneous statement (look it up if you don't know the meaning, Hotairship!!!!!!!!!!!!!), it is owned and run by one of the nicest, kindest families we have ever had the pleasure to meet, nothing is too much trouble and you are treated with respect at all times. Much more respect than you can receive in so called 5- star hotels in other parts of the world.
Yes it is hilly and yes it can be very hot. All of this is pointed out in the olympic brochure. If flat and cold is what you require from your holiday, then this obviously is not for you.
The rooms at the hotel are spotlessly clean and the cleaner is exceptional. Even folding all your clothes and lining up your shoes. We always leave her a small thankyou tip as she works so hard. Half of the rooms have had brand new refurbished wet rooms put in last winter and the other half will be completed this coming winter. the hotel was completely repained outside over last winter too and we have never seen any evidence of "flaking paint"
The breakfasts consist of cereals, greek yoghurt, fresh orange, eggs(scrambled, omelette, boiled or fried), toast and as much tea/coffee you require. All is freshly done, not cold toast in a toast rack, as we have experienced in the past in other countries.
The welcome meal, (the best mousaka, ever!!!!!!!) was NOT cooked by the cleaning lady(Hotairship!!!!!!!!!????????), but by Gregoris' cousin, and exceptional cook. This evening is always an outstanding success and is followed by a great quiz and lots of laughing and joking.
The pool area is outstandingly beautful and clean with ample sun loungers to go around. Never in all our holidays have we not had a lounger at anytime of the day we wanted one.
Everyone in the village itself is friendly and very happy to see you. There is a couple of gravel tracks around the village, but this is what makes it so lovely, this is Greece as Greece should be. There are plently of built up skyscraper, tarmac roads and English bar type holidays elsewhere in the world if this is your choice.
We cannot put into words how wonderful this place is and we know we are not alone. Jenny Gregoris and Panos are amazing hosts and we will continue to go here on our holidays for as long as we can. Thankyou very much again for the happiest two weeks we had with you all in June. Fiona & Mike
