The challenge to make your way up the gorge against the current in this ice cold water is a must. The feeling you get when you get out is nothing short of invigirating, no wonder Achilles found imortality after being dipped in the Spring as a child, just a shame his mother forgot about his heal !!!! what makes this attraction even better is the fact that it is free like a lot of the historical sites in Greece.

Hired a car in Parga and got to the Acheron at Glyki in about 30 minutes. The river rafting was gentle and lovely and at 6 euro each, we'll worth it. Would like to do a walk or horse ride in the shallow river next time.

We visited as part of a day trip from Nidri and had the option of a raft ride for 6 euros. Not exactly "white water", but a little "hairy" in places Note, you will get a little wet and you will have to paddle. The raft ride was well worth going on to get a different perspective of the river Acheron. The raft ride took us to a shady taverna on the river bank where we had a nice Greek salad and some cool beer.

Climbing up the gorge through rapids and the fast flowing river was a highlight of our holiday. After a short walk along the riverbank in trees we entered the river and waded through the shallows with the other holiday makers, but as we went further the numbers dropped and the water temperature rose. The springs cascading into the river make the water cold to begin with, but keep going. The trek had been billed as 1.5 hours but it took us 3 to get to the bridge and back, but was worth every minute.
We had booked a package from Sivota, and enjoyed the rafting, though it was hardly white water thrills, the pony trekking involved more plodding and the flying fox was fun if short, but the service of looking after your car keys made it very worthwhile. For the trek you need just a swimming costume and waterproof shoes. Crocs float and need to be resued and more normal sandals quickly wreck. The 8E river shoes sold at the entrance work well but are now falling to pieces. The riverbed is stony and the water fast. But brilliant!
YOU MUST ALL BE GOOD SWIMMERS! It is deep and fast. I would not take a child under 10years old for the full distance.
But the views are amazing and floating down stream in the peaceful surroundings is breathtaking, as is literally the waterfall!

A good day out, we travelled by car obviously got lost, but that is quite normal. We walked the river and it was very cold but you got used to it. We did not feel the need to go on a raft/horse or canoe. The scenery is lovely, we ate in the local restaurant which was also very good, but be warned the service was slow ...
