We were met promptly on arrival at the dock by the car the hotel had arranged to pick us up and 15 minutes later, we were eating a copious Greek breakfast poolside with one of the best views I'd ever seen. Christina, the manager, and the other staff were endlessly cheerful and helpful with information and suggestions (how could they not be, working in a place this stunning?). The accommodations are nice, big and clean, but basic with just some pretty, antique furniture, tile floors and bare, white-washed walls. You would probably expect a little more luxury for the price in general, but you're on a remote and idyllic Greek island surrounded by a sprinkling of billionnaires' villas and that comes at a price. The hotel is a jumble of little buildings, walkways and gardens, and all the rooms have big terraces and amazing sea views. There is a large, sparkling pool and a couple of big shaded terraces for lounging and watching the boats come in and out. The location is a little remote, but the tranquility you get is worth it and you need a scooter or car to explore the island anyway. All three major towns and the best beaches are no more than a few minutes panoramic drive. The hotel doesn't serve lunch or dinner (except by special request the day before) but restaurant options abound and are inexpensive, and there are small kitchens in the rooms if you don't want to brave the roads in the dark. There is also satellite TV and free WiFi, but why would you waste your time with those things?! The sampler of Korres bathroom products was excellent.

Patmos is a great island, with a relaxing atmosphere. Will return for sure! -at another hotel
The positives for the hotel:
- Nice location. Needs car or scooter, but a bit away from the port's fuss
- Very nice rooms and decoration. Nice sea view
- Excellent cleaning staff. Very thorough and friendly
- Full and generous breakfast served by the pool with a nice view. Friendly and accommodating staff (cook & waitress)
And the negatives:
- The number 1 major issue we faced was the poor sound insulation of our room. The room was named "Zeus" and we were told it was the second season it was operating. There was an inside door leading to the room next to it. Our neighbors were a friendly middle-aged Italian couple and we were able to hear the man's snoring in the night. The first two days we woke up pretty early when they turned on the TV. Then we discussed the issue with them and practically they did their best not to bother us again, which was very helpful for us to enjoy the rest of our holidays. We were also obliged to do the same and were very careful when opening, closing, doors, windows, whispering to each other. The most annoying thing was the hotel's manager denial of ever having any complaint from another customer. The hotel's owner was very polite but he also denied ever hearing of the problem before. From a practical point of view they did nothing for us to ease our dissatisfaction and show us they truly care for our holidays and value our business.
- The plumbing is terrible in the way that, opening or closing of a tap in our room, the room next to ours or even two rooms away produced an annoying squeaking noise
- The pool was not working for almost a week due to a mechanical part's failure
- The breakfast is exactly the same every day
- The breakfast serving area is swarmed with bees and wasps
- When the hotel's owner is not in Patmos i.e. staying at his hotel, nobody is around after 14.00.

After having reviewed the other comments before our departure, I was really skeptical about our choice. As a matter of fact I was really surprised not only by the spectacular location (I knew it in advance), but mainly by the kindness of the people. The supervisor (Kristina) was present for most of the time (contrary wise of what reported in the previous comments) and able and willing to help us anytime. The owner did not really speak English but he was also very kind and tried to made our stay as pleasant as possible. Just and example he did not charge us for the water that we drank in the room during our stay and he offered us a drink the afternoon before our departure. The rooms are clean, even though a bit small, and my only "negative" comment is about the lack of pots and pans in the room, so that we need to ask for them in advance if we wanted to cook.
Breakfast (or better bunch) was also super
Overall a very positive experience in a beautiful island
We will return hopefully

We've returned to the 9 Muses for some 5 years now. The setting is simply spectacular and, in June & September at least, the place is as wonderfully peaceful as Patmos itself. The rooms are fabulous, breakfast is really nice and the cleaning staff does a great job.

I've read some of the negative reviews and believe that they are due to expectations. This is not a Hyatt Hotel and you will be very disappointed if you expect concierge service, a dockside pick-up service and the like. You do need either a car or scooter but you do so anywhere in Patmos because of the geography of the place.

If you are an at least somewhat independent traveler you will love the 9 Muses. It has all the charm and quiet of old time Greece.

We spent some days in September and it was really disappointing for what we paid. The hotel is totally mismanaged. The ads on internet are completely unreliable. We were abandoned to ourselves. It was crazy, for what we paid. NO WAY!

These apartments are located in a beautiful hill side location and are furnished and cleaned to a very high standard. The pool area is very pleasant with fabulous views. Breakfast is very good with lots of fresh fruit, breads, cheese and meats. The hotel does not do eveing meals contrary to its web site information. The location is quite isolated, so we would recommend renting a car or scooter which can be organised through the owner. The nearest town, Skala is approximately 3 to 4 km, but there is a nice little village with a few taverna's 2km away.

The service staff were fabulous friendly and helpful and very hard working.

Unfortunately we cannot say the same about the owner. On our arrival he was friendly and said he would make our stay pleasurable and gave us completmentary fruit Fabulous we thought. From then on it was a different story. On day one I reported various faults around our appartment which required attention. One of the faults was very important, as it was a safety issue with an exposed electrical fitting. A couple of items were addressed, but the owner ignored all of the others including the safety issue. The television did not work all week This we were not to worried about, but others may have found this unacceptable.

The staff normaly present in the mornings. After that you are on your own and the owner is not easy to track down.

To finish our wonderful stay, the credit card machine was faulty after approximately an hour and many transactions and refunds latter we concluded. Unfortunately on our return to the UK checked my credit statement to fing that the refunds we exchanged at different rates leaving us 156euro's out of pocket. I tried to isssue this with the owner as the problem was caused by his credit machine and his bankers. After several weeks this did not get resolved through the owner and I had to reslove this through a banking dispute service.

In conclusion: This is a very nice hotel with lovely service staff, let down by poor management. The owner says he will do something but in reality does nothing and is not prepared to accept anyone else's view but his own. Dissapointing end.

We were looking forward to staying at 9 Muses after staying for five consecutive years at a different place in Patmos. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations and to the reports of other guests on this site.

Truly the worst part of the stay was the service. Completely unprofessional and unhospitable. We could never find any staff to help us when we needed it...they're around at breakfast and then everyone, owner included, disappears.

First of all the website promises a shuttle from the port, but the owner told us that we would have to get a taxi. There isn't any restaurant service other than breakfast, contrary to what is publicized online. Once during our stay we inquired about having a dinner and were told that we would be able to plan it with the owner the next morning at breakfast, but then no one ever showed up or ever asked us about it again.

We felt like we were being taken advantage of on several occasions. For example, when we booked they tried to charge for high season when our dates were at the end of the lower season rates. Perhaps it was an honest mistake. But then at check-out, we were presented with a mini-bar bill of nearly €90! Apparently the water -- a "quality water" from Norway -- is worth €10 despite the fact that the price list said €1.10. Although the charges were removed, it was a very unpleasant encounter and the owner had the nerve to ask us, and I quote, "Why are you so pissed?"

The rooms are nicely set up but the television didn't work and the radio was missing... at check-in the owner showed us the remote control and pointed to the empty spot on the dresser, saying "Um, that's where the radio should be."

It was impossible to eat breakfast due to a dangerous swarm of wasps every morning. The staff told us that they knew about the wasps and their remedy was to put plastic wrap on top of the plate of cold cuts and cheese (which obviously did nothing to detract the wasps). When we asked to move to another table in a different area, the staff said that "there are wasps there too." We ended up bringing our food to our apartment on our own, since to have the breakfast brought to the room costs an additional €3.

Beware of hidden charges. We wanted a frappe with our breakfast which we've found standard in all other hotels in Greece with breakfast included, but here we were told it would cost €6. The average price of a frappe in a restaurant is about €2 but honestly a place that claims to be so service-oriented and luxurious could surely foot the bill for some Nescafe powder, milk, water and ice?? Especially when freshly squeezed orange juice is provided free of charge?

Needless to say, our stay was a huge disappointment. The cherry on top of the sundae was when we checked out. We were in a group of 6 and two members of the group tried using their credit cards to pay, and were each told that the card was unreadable or couldn't be charged. Surprise, surprise, when we returned home each found charges for nearly the entire stay for the whole group on their accounts, and are now having to go through the charge dispute process with their credit card companies. A huge hassle.

This place is gorgeous, great views, nice pool, and has a lot of potential --- but it is so mismanaged it's just a total shame. Can't recommend it.
