The island of Nissiros is a a wonderful pleasure. The island is small, not very accessible and does not offer all night drinking and partying. Just my kind of place!!
What it does offer is friendly locals, good value and peace and quiet.
The whole island is a volcano and has been habituated for some thousands of years, there are some ruins just outside Mandraki (the main town)
The volcano is accessible by coach or by walking (which we did). As you walk up you notice the abundance of different colours of soil and rock, due to mineral deposits.
The crater itself is a sun trap and is also hot from geothermal activity. There are a number of fumaroles where very hot gas escapes from, one of which took the hairs off my leg! (not joking!)
If you go by coach there are drinks and refreshments to be had. If you walk make sure to take plenty of water. Overall it was a great experience, there cant be any other volcanos so accessible. During our stay we experienced a very minor earthquake, which we were assured was normal, nothing to worry about and presented no danger.
Would we go back? Yes, like a shot!
