Stopped at Smaragdi apts thought they where great. I went with my husband, two children aged 11 and 6 and the in-laws. We had a great time. We where the only family with children so we had the pool to ourslevs for the full fortnight. Maria who worked behind the bar was an angel and always made a fuss of the kids. The bus stop was right outside the hotel and arrived like clock work every half hour, it took you to Kos town in 10mins. I would recommend that you use Soltan sun lotion from boots with the mosquito repellant already in, as there are lots of the little blighters, but luckly we didnt get bitten. Anyway if you are going dont expect 5star just expect what you have paid for and that is a lovely family run 2 star complex, Happy Holiday.
We stayed at the Smaragdi studios for 2 weeks from 5th August, and had a great stay. Having stayed in accommodation of the standard described on the Olympic website before, we knew what to expect, and were therefore unsurpised by our room and the location. The room was clean and had everything you'd expect. The bathroom was small and had the standard greek-style shower (the sort you have to hold to use rather than hook up and stand under). Rooms were cleaned and bins emptied pretty much daily. Towels were refreshed every 2-3 days and bed linen 2-3 times per week. Reception staff were friendly and generally helpful. The pool is fine, and big enough for several people + inflatables! Location-wise, the studios are about 5 minutes walk from the centre of Lambi, and a further 5 minutes stroll to the beach (and I mean the pace you need to adopt in the warmer climate, not the pace you use at home!). The beach was a mixture of sand and fine shingle, and shelved quite steeply - fine for adults, but children would need supervision. Kos Town was about 25 minutes stroll but the shops on the way make it quite pleasant. We noticed a great number of people on bicycles, and decided to try this ourselves. Smaragdi staff contacted a local agent and for 12 Euros each per week, we had the best form of transport for the area! It took us less than 10 minutes to get to Kos Town and we were also able to visit Tingaki and the Asklepion a couple of times. We took boat trips to Bodrum and the volcanic island of Nisyros - both well worth seeing. All in all, we had a good holiday and Smaragdi Studios helped to make it that way.
Myself and my partner stayed here the last week in July and the first week in August2006. We travelled to Kos from Ireland with Budget Travel. When we arrived late on tuesday night we were allocated the wrong room (we had requested a non ground floor room)and when I informed reception I was told to come back in the morning to the manager, which I did and there was no problem with changing the room, which they did within the hour for us.The rooms were kept extremely clean&tidy with towel changes every 2nd day and linen changes maybe 2/3 times weekly. The pool area was also cleaned and treated every evening after use.
We found the staff to be very friendly,(one of the female reception staff was extremely friendly towards certain male guests!)helpful and nothing was too much trouble. There were nights when we did not go out to eat and reception had no issues with ringing in take away for us(they have a list of chinese, pizza etc)There was also no issue in relation to ringing taxis for us or giving us information on local beaches, nice local restaurants that the Greeks themselves eat in etc
From reading other reviews we were initially a bit nervous travelling out here as we didnt know what to expect and found some of the reviews a bit harsh and inaccurate. The brochure stated that we were in Lambi on the edge of Kos town (which was ideal as we didnt want to stay in the centre of town). It is about a 5minute walk to Lambi and maybe another 10mins into Kos town but as there are so many gift shops&restaurants etc on the roadside it never felt that long to us.
The appartments do have a poolside snack bar and while the food is not necessarily that bad you do have to wait an awful long time to be served. On the one day that we did order food we had three items between us and my partners one came out first, when that eaten the second part of the meal came out and then when that was gone my lunch eventually came out!Only one thing can be cooked at a time but I suppose at least you know it was fresh!
The only down side to these appartments and the one thing that disappointed us was the fact that the bar is not very lively here(its actually quite dead) or that big.If you felt like you did not want to head in around to Lambi or Kos town you certainly could not stay in the bar all evening as you would be truely bored after an hour.We couldnt even have one here in the night time before we went out as it was so quite.
But if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in clean, friendly apartments with a good sized, clean swimming pool on the outskirts of all hussle and bussle of Kos Town then this is the one for you.I would have no trouble recommending it to a friend or indeed staying here again ourselves.
I have read the other review of these apartments and while a lot of it is correct, I think it gives the wrong impression of the place. Yes it is not in KOS, but that is one of its pleasures. It is about 6 or 7 minutes walk from Lambi and that is about 20 minutes walk to the centre of Kos. While there are other apartments and buildings around, you are in a little bit of countryside with cows and goats just across the road from you. There are loads of restaurants and bars in Lambi and it is all build up from there to KOS.
We found the apartments to be clean and well maintained. We had two hired and both were kept to the same standard. There are basic and small, but again what do you expect.
Perhaps because it is so much in the countryside, insects were a problem for us as well or more to the point for me. The others got bit as well, but only I seemed to react to them. However some of it was my own fault, such as sitting out late, reading. We were there in late June, start of July. It was very hot but with a nice breeze blowing.
There are two beaches each about 10 minutes from the apartments however if you like swimming the pool at the apartments was very good and deep. I am 6 foot and I couldn’t stand up in most of it.
We found the staff to be friendly and certainly were able to order taxies for us when needed etc. Kos itself we found to be wonderful, food lovely (go to the old town) and the people by and large very friendly.
We would recommend the apartments. I have rated them only a 3, but that is because they are basic. However that is what we expected. Compared to some of the places we have stayed in in Spain over the years, this was streets ahead.
We travelled to Kos last month with Olympic. Having been told that the Smaragdi were in Kos Town, just a short walk to the Port, [we like to see other Islands each day by ferry etc.], we found that it was 45 mins. walk to the Town; 15 mins. to the nearest Beach; 10 mins to the Village of Lambi.
We asked about local buses; no one knew or cared. Ferry timetables, no one knew or cared. Taxis, no one knew or cared.
Having been a traveller for many years, I never have trouble with mosquitos BUT Lambi was another story. We were eaten alive despite sprays, plug-ins and gallons of Citronella. Now, I know that no one can help that a place is particularly bad for biting insects BUT NO ONE warned us! BECAUSE eventually you have to sleep with all the doors and windows closed and with the Air-con on. THAT COSTS ANOTHER 4€ per night.
The only nice thing was the night porter. It got so bad one night I went down to have a drink and try to relax [around 3 am]. He was a delight, making coffee and supplying metaxa, local info. by the ream AND the local S-Tan spray which is the only thing that works.
Add to this that the rooms were poorly maintained and cleaned and everything was too much trouble, we left halfway through the Holiday and moved to the Hotel Triton [sic].
I discovered online later that we could have flown to Rhodes by BA; Express Cat to Kos and 14 nights at the Triton for LESS than it cost with Olympic Holidays.
Travel Companies should learn that, in these days of the Internet, they should treat their customers with more respect. We don't need them any more!
