We have recently returned from our second visit to the Irene Apartments in Psalidi. My friend and I have been going away from a week in the sun (without husbands) for 15 years, this is the first time we have every gone back anywhere and we're really glad we did.
The apartments are fairly standard Greek accommodation - although you do get a proper wall-mounted shower, with a shower tray and curtain not a hole in the bathroom floor! and they are kept spotlessly clean.
What makes this place really special is the family that owns it - Ilias, Nick and Jack are excellent hosts who can't do enough to make your holiday go well. They have a superb knack of making you feel like you are staying with friends while at the same time providing excellent service.
Breakfast at the snack bar was so good and reasonably priced that we didn't bother to cook anything in the apartment and usually kept us going until we went out for dinner at night.
Don't worry that they don't currently have a contract with a tour operator (although they hopefully should have one by next season). We booked flight, accommodation and transfers separately and got a really good deal (transfer tip - make sure they know you are going to the Irene in Psalidi because there is another one in Tigakik, which is miles away!) Let's face it you don't really need a tour rep - all they want to do is sell you overpriced excursions! Nick, Jack and Ilias are more than happy to help out with anything else - they booked a taxi for us to get to out boat trip, reconfirmed our return transfers and sorted out transport for us to get to Zia for sunset.
Out and about - the apartments are a short level stroll to the beach where there is a good selection of tavernas - we had good meals at Mavroumatis, Akrogiali, Blue Ocean and Nestoras. Beyond that it is a further 20 minutes into Kos Town where there are endless options for eating, shopping, boat trips and even culture. We ate at Zorbas on our first visit two years ago and went back again this time - the Lamb Zorba is to die for!!
Don't listen to anybody who says don't go to Greece because of the economic problems. Give Kos and the Irene Apartments a go - you won't regret it.
