We travelled to Karpathos in September and Poseidon was recommended by our Greek travel companion as the right base for our 9 day stay. Our expectations of both the island and the hotel were exceeded in absolutely every way.
First, the island is beautiful: rugged, unspoilt, with an abundance of beautiful beaches, each seemingly with its own little taverna only metres away.
The hotel is in a great location down a private road, a cluster of buildings dotted on the hillside with superb views to the emerald waters and white sandy beaches below. We stayed in the suite, and it is beautiful, but we were out and about every day (at one of the many amazing beaches within walking or driving distance) so luxury wasn't essential, but still very nice (and I would book that room again). The hotel staff were without exception warm, friendly and helpful.
Poseidon is by no means five-star fancy but rather in perfect harmony with its laid-back surrounds. The common area and reception are nothing flash, but the restaurant is where you'll spend your time and it's a wonderful sanctuary. Tables are set over terraces and framed in fig trees and bougainvillea, to give every table a sense of intimacy and a stunning view to the pristine water below - sitting there, you can be in no doubt about where on the planet you are.
We travel to eat and the food at Poseidon is exceptional: interesting takes on Greek classics and other "modern" additions (phrases that usually frighten the hell out of me but really work here), and after a day at the beach generally eating more traditional fare, it's a welcome treat. We ate in the restaurant every single night and I would do it all again if I stayed for a month.
But if the food was good, service in the restaurant is next-level and this review could not be complete without special mention of Ingmar, the co-owner (along with his wife Angela who heads the talent in the kitchen). We met Ingmar on our first night and it is no exaggeration to say that he made our holiday come alive and constantly resetting then exceeding expectations. His knowledge of Greek wines is peerless and his passion infectious - we quickly handed the reigns to him and he never let us down. Ingmar has a genuinely sanguine but efficient way that is very rarely seen in his role - even at the busiest times, with a full restaurant (every night for good reason) at peak hour, there is never a hint that he is rushed or panicked, he has all the time in the world for everyone and never lets your holiday bubble burst. Somehow, that doesn't translate to slow service - only to the sense that life simply doesn't get any better.
The truth is that thanks to Ingmar's influence, Poseidon became a very soulful second home that we can't wait to get back to. He is genuine, generous and the kind of truly interesting person you hope to meet on holiday but rarely do. He has found his calling both in his partnership with Angela and her family, and in this remote and beautiful island that we hope to return to again and again.

Our third time in this lovely place. We hadn't been since 2008 and they've achieved to even improve this hotel & restaurant located in one of the most breathtaking places in the world. The rooms are confortable, nice and simple, but who needs more when you can see the amazingly coloured mediterranean sea from the shower? Great food from Angela & Ingmar, great attention from Regina, Karolina and all the guys and girls overthere. Plus, the island remains almost untouched. We'll be back for sure. Congratulations!
