It's definitely a place worth visiting when you're in Santorini ! It's completely breathtaking and you feel like you actually on a different planet! It's a long walk though to the top but the views are AMAZING when you get there! Unforgettable experience !

The boat ride was very pleasant. You can get refreshments/ beverages for sale on board. The island is entirely volcanic rock- black like coal- looks gradually inclined but the gradient was quite steep in some areas. You must be in fair shape to go up as time is limited. Its part of the Kameni geological reserve. The paths are not so well marked but easy enough to follow. Can be slippery at places. The guide showed places where fumes were actually coming out of the ground. I felt the time was too short but its worth going there at least once- the boat ride and especially the views are sublime.

It is a must visit. There were places where you could see actual sulphur fumes. The island also have several spots to offer great views.

My husband and I spent a week in Santorini, and so the boat ride to Nea Kameni was on our list of "possible things to consider." We decided it would be remiss not to visit the volcano responsible for such a lovely island. We booked with Dakoutros-the Calipso Glass Bottom Boat only because it was available at a convenient time, 2 PM and 15 Euros seemed a fair price for a 3 hour trip, which included a stop for a half hour swim at a hot spring. I had read mixed reviews on T.A. about these boat trips before leaving, so I was a bit skeptical.
If one of your "Things To Do" is to walk down the donkey path in Fira, this would be the day to do it, since the boat leaves from the Old Port at the bottom of the path. Upon returning, you have the option of walking back up, taking a donkey ride (5 Euros), or the gondola (6 Euros). We opted to walk both ways, just for the exercise...beware of donkey poo--but worth the walk just for the entertainment of the donkey riders laughing and screaming, and the spectacular views.
The boat is comfortable, but don't get too excited about the glass bottom...nothing was visible. There was also no commentary offered...this was strictly just a form of transportation. We stopped at a small harbor guarded by a small, pristine, white chapel on shore. The guests were invited to swim in the hot springs. The "disclaimer" was simple, "If you can't swim don't jump off the boat!" Although the boat seemed close to the shore, we dove into depths of 25 meters. It was cool and refreshing, and as I swam toward the shore, there were pockets of warm water. It was exhilarating to swim along the black, lava cliffs edging the harbor. After a half hour, the boat blasted its deep horn and we returned for the trip to the volcano island, Nea Kameni.
The island is dark black rock, and lava ash, desolate, sinister and uninviting. The hike up 430 feet was a bit steep, but we stopped to gaze into the depths of the yawning craters and were struck by the views of Fira and Oai from the top. The biggest issue was time, and I had read that was the biggest complaint. We rushed up and down, taking brief moments to suck in the views and to appreciate the stark "Star Wars" beauty of the volcanic island that we had been staring at from our B&B in Oai.
We were very glad we included this activity in our itinerary.

to get there, we took the sailing boat cruise which powers over to Nea Kameni for 1 1/2 hours to give you time to hike to the volcano top. It costs extra (2 euros) to make the hike but it was worth it for the views of Santorini and the caldera. The volcano itself isn't too much once at the top but it's a good hike and there were some fume-roles that were steaming and smoking thus showing that it is indeed still an active volcano. We did not have a guide nor were we offered one. The lady on the boat who was making the announcements on time and such said she was our guide but that was a loose term as she stayed on the boat the entire time.
