Owner description: This is the most obvious hike you can make on the island of Santorini and it will lead you - if you have not discovered them by now - through the sister villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli, going higher up all the time above the caldera. It then continues through the expanding housing in northern direction and it finally goes to Oia via a really magnificent path. This hike offers many changing views on the volcano, the sea and the caldera. This hike takes two hours and a half (actual walking time), but the total time can reach 4 or 5 hours. It is ideal to leave Firà at about 10am and in this way you will arrive in Oia already between 1 and 2pm. You can then eat in Oia in one of the many bars. In the afternoon you can descend to the little harbour of Ammoudi in Oia. From the bus square in Fira (when you get to Fira by bus) you have to continue to the very busy square of Theotokopoulou. This is the modern centre of Fira with a lot of travel agencies, banks and bars. In the corner, in between the George's Snack Corner and the Pelican travel agency you go left, in the direction of the caldera. You can then take one of the three streets off the right, they all lead towards the higher part of Fira. Once at the Archaeological Museum higher up (this museum is open till 3pm, but not on Mondays), take a left, past the upper station of the cable car. You then go right above the caldera, until the red-brown building higher up that dominates this neighbourhood of Firostefani: it is the P.M. Nomikos Conference Centre, where a lot of exhibitions take place – on the extending corner in front of this building many people take pictures of the marvellous panoramic view. On the left of the Centre you follow the tiled road and stairs, while you enjoy the view – in front of you you can see the even higher situated village of Imerovigli.

“Strenuous but Worth It”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Because I am 63 years old and not exactly the "after" picture for a gymnasium ad, I approached the prospect of doing this 8 mile hike with a little trepidation. Having done it, though, I'm certainly glad I did. The views are every bit as spectacular as the other reviewers have said they are, and the hike is probably the highlight of my wife's and my recent vacation to Santorini.

We started in Oia and ended in Fira. The first third out of Oia was the most strenuous part of the trip, with considerable uphill movement over trails that were often rocky and gravelly. After about a third of the way one encounters a juice stand (the freshly squeezed orange juice here is excellent) and from that point on things got considerably better. If you take things very slowly and stop frequently to take pictures, the trip should take around four hours; younger and fitter people could probably knock half an hour off this. Carrying a bottle of water with you is essential, as are, of course, comfortable shoes.

“Nice views, but it is a long way”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

Claimed to be a 2.5 hour walk, it can turn out to be a much longer and exhausting hike on a warm and sunny day. There are certainly beautiful views, but you need to have some stamina to complete this path.

“Not To Be Missed If On Santorini”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

This visit to Santorini was our second. We had previously been married here 3 yrs ago but did not know of this amazing walk. It's was the highlight of our 7 day stay and I recommend that if you have no health issues and it's not over 30 degrees to go do it.
Ok so firstly make your way to the cable car in fira. From here continue on the path to fire stefani. Keep on the path and you will next pass by Imergovili. Then the path becomes more rural and the walk really begins. It is about 9 miles long and took us about 2.5hrs. It was not hot when we took off but about half way the sun came out in full force and it was quite hot.
You will see the best views of the island on this amazing walk believe me. Just have good walking shoes or boots or like me a pair of walking sandles. You will have to go onto a main rd for about 2 minutes but then the path resumes.
On reaching Oia pop into one of the cafes and have a cold beer or two. The Yellow Donkey beer is especially good. You will have built up a thurst.
We set of in May at about 2:30 and were in oia for 5pm. Had a few beers then dinner and still were in time for the famous Oia sunset with a nice iced coffee.
I will tell you now this is a walk not to be missed. You won't be sorry you did it. The bus home is about €1.50 so don't bother with a taxi. They run every half hr. Enjoy

“Super!”
Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

My boyfriend and I did this hike in may 2013, late afternoom to reach oia for the sunset. it took us about 2 hours to complete the hike from imerovigli to oia. You need good walking shoes, sunscreen and plenty of water. This was a very pleasant hike, a lot of hills but nice flat parts to recover on. We really enjoyed the walk and would definitely do it again and recommend it.

“Favourite experience in Santorini”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

This is so worth it. Exactly like all the reviews say, and even more breathtaking than you can imagine. My husband and I are in our mid twenties and fairly fit but this still had my legs sore the next day! However, if you take your time and wear good hiking shoes you should be fine. It took us about 3 hours from Fira to Oia and we stopped to take a million pictures. We were staying in Oia, so we spent the day touring around the island by public bus, finishing in Fira. This way we could hike back to watch the sunset from the cliffs. If you are feeling adventurous, try to time it so you end up on the high point right before Oia (there is a little church there) at sunset. I think this would be an incredible spot to watch it from, but you'd have to be okay hiking down that hill in twilight. I think it would be worth it!
Definitely bring a lot of water and snacks because when we went, nothing was open along the way. It can be a bit tricky to find the path, but we just started from the cable car in Fira and tried to keep the cliff as close to our left as possible and had no problems following it - it does go along the road at some parts.
