Having read the reviews about Avli on Tripadvisor I was expecting something nice from Avli, however my experience was way better than any of my expectations. As soon as I arrived I was smiling like a Cheshire cat!!

I have never written a review about a holiday before but I had the lovliest (avliest) time at Avli that I felt anyone visiting Crete should also have the opportunity to stay somewhere so special.

We stayed in the champagne suite - it was beautiful... a real pleasure to come home to in the evenings. The place was immaculately cleaned everyday - the room was so romantic and I loved the double spa hot tub / bath in the en-suite.

Me and my boyfriend spent one of the first evenings in the hot tub pool on the roof of the apartments, watching the sun go down :) - Incredible.

Thanassis (Avli's manager) was the best host - he was so welcoming. He personally recommended things for us to do everyday based on how we felt, and took the time to provide us with detailed directions and tips of where to stop and eat, etc.

The weather in late September was beautiful. It looked forward to going to breakfast each morning and being able to order something different from the breakfast menu (rather than a buffet breakfast that you get at most hotels) in the gorgeous garden, that can only be described as a little paradise in the old town.

The evening menu was also amazing - everyone was so helpful and friendly - it was like everyone at Avli really tries to make you feel special. A couple we met at Chania airport had even commented on the fact that they had the best meal of their lives in Rethymnon on their last night - (it was at Avli - we hadn't even told them that is were we had stayed at the point) :)

I also could not believe how reasonably priced it was to stay at Avli when considering what you get!!

I won't write anymore, despite the fact that that I could write an essay on here but I cannot recommend Avli enough to anyone wanting a really relaxed, tranquil and romantic holiday in the pretty little old town of Rethymnon. I really didn't want to leave and I definitely plan to go back.

Well where do we start?!
After visiting 29 countries so far (with many more to come hopefully) the Avli hotel has to be one of the top 3 hotels we have ever stayed at.
It starts with your first e-mail when you are introduced to Thanassis, the charismatic hotel manager. He was very professional with all our communication before we had even arrived.
Once on the island of Crete we arrived in Heraklion and had a car rental to the hotel. Don't let this frighten you - it's so easy to find with a GPS and the maps that Thanassis will email you ahead of time. Parking is literally 100m from the hotel and they provide a safe place for your rental for 30 euro for the week.
We were greeted on arrival by Johnnie and he provided some refreshments and food while they checked us in.Thannasis had upgraded us to the "White Suite" for the week and we were very grateful as it was gorgeous with 3 small Juliet balconies overlooking a colourful pedestrian street.
The hotel itself is a series of buildings all nearly adjacent to each other. The dining area consists of a beautiful courtyard with many natural and rustic appointments - by the way all our dining was al fresco, as the weather was perfect. We, like others who've reviewed here, ate almost all our meals at the Avli as the food was some of the best we have encountered. For Crete, it's not the least expensive, but you wont regret it. The food is natural, and fresh. A favourite appetizer that we ordered every night were the lamb meatballs (If only we had that recipe)...and the best choice for eggs at breakfast were definitely the scrambled eggs with tomato.
The staff at the Avli made us feel like family during our stay.Thanassis would sit and talk with us every morning and give us tips or recommendations on our itinerary for the day. He would again be there for dinner making sure our day was a success.
George(Yiorgi) was one of the highllights of the hotel for us! He's a vibrant young man with a great laugh, and energy that can't be restrained. We found ourselves out past midnight most night's just laughing with George and Anotonis, the restaurant manager, while they watched us drink Raki with honey which is the customary after dinner aperatif.
After checking out of the Avli, and while at the Port in Heraklion ready to board our ferry to Santorini, we realized we had forgotten to remove some valuables from our room at the Avli. In a panic, we contacted Thanassis, and he immediately put us at ease and said he would courier our belongings to our next hotel, and not to worry. Tragedy averted! Thanassis, if you are reading this, thanks again. You handled that matter perfectly! Nothing is a problem at this hotel.
So in general, the hotel, and the rooms are GREAT- no complaints...rooms tick all boxes...they are chic and very modern with old world flair...but on this trip, we realized it's the people at Avli that made it special.
We were sad to leave Crete and our new friends, but we'll forever remember their fantastic warm hospitality..and whenever we hear the names Thanassis or George we will think back to the fond memories that we will forever cherish while at the Avli. Check the hotel's website for photos of this charming place to see what you will be missing if you don't stay at the Avli!!! Book this place....you'll never regret it!!!
Yamas!

Room Tip: The Executive suites are fantastic ... however we did peek into a couple other rooms, and they too are VERRRY lovely. We would be happy to stay in any room at the Avli ***however the bathtub in the white suite is difficult to get into and out of - something to consider if you are an older traveller or have limitations.

Stayed here for a few days in Sept & had a lovely time. We were greated with wine & nibbles upon check in, our room the champayne suite was situated just around the corner-really nice! the only thing we could say would be to somehow alter the shower, water would end up everywhere each time we used it so leaving a damp smell.
Breakfast was plentiful & we ate in the restaurant one nght which we really enjoyed, just lovely! We celebrated our anniversary while there & came back to roses in the room, again really nice.
Roof top terrace we were lucky enough to have to ourselves for a day. Overall a great place, we would recommend!!

After finding a cheap flight to Crete, I started looking for a good hotel on the island. The first hotel that poped right into my eyes was Avli, and boy I'm so glad it did. Right after booking this place you could see that it's something else - Thanassis, the hotel manager, sent us an email with warm words and directions to the hotel and the best parking place around.
Upon arriving Thanassis waited for us with drinks and some quick snackes. The room was amazing, on an historic building with a big Jacuzzi.

The best place you'll ever visit, just WOW.

Thanassis, We're already missing you guys!

Your friends from Israel, Ortal and Lauren :)

Room Tip: Stayed at the white suite, amazing!

This is a wonderful place to stay and eat. Thanassis is a wonderful host and takes are of your every need. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food and decor are exquisite ! The old town is the best location with it's quaint alleyways and overhanging vines. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Just a little patch of paradise ! We loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to come back.
