“Rooms a bit of a lottery but can't go wrong on this budget”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

We did the usual trip advisor review check and this place came up highly recommended. Its a great location near the bars and restaurants of Plantanes (5 min walk) and less than that to Lidl if you are self catering which we were. The apartments look lovely, the welcome was great and the place has a intimate feel to it. It is right near the main road but then most places are if you want proximity to life and the beach, otherwise its half way up a cliff inthe middle of nowhere, we were under no illusions, the level of noise is fine. We paid for a two bed apartment but ended up having a studio, arrived 9th September. Reason being the apartment was on the ground floor (garden view) but had no light whatsover, so we switched to a room that was less expensive but was first floorwith a pool view and private balcony. In terms of what room you get it seems to be a bit of a lottery when you arrive and our bathroom was small. From other reviews it seems there are better rooms and again reflects the title of my review. Artur, bar man and fixer extraordinaire, was a legend and couldn't be more helpful, definately topped the service at this place. Putting in perspective what you have paid, is essential to take into account when doing these reviews and the value for money at La Stella can't be faulted. I'd recommend self catering (well its b &b at a minimum) for a stay at this hotel.

We stayed at La Stella from 15th September 2012 for 2 weeks, we arrived nearly 1am but was made very welcome by Arthur and we got time to relax at the bar before it closed. first impressions of the hotel was, it looks lovely, it was excatly the same as the pictures we had seen. The staff where very friendly and always happy to help. Arthur Cocktails are as good, if not better than previous reviews have stated. The hotel was very clean and our room was cleaned and tided every day. The hotel was very quiet during that day, which was lovely. Close to the the main strip or shops and resturants, if you would like to eat off the beaten track Arthur can recommend some very good local places. I would really recommend this hotel. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and would deffinatly return.

We had a wonderful time at La Stella Apartments in Crete, where we stayed for a two week holiday from 31st August - 13th September 2012. It is a boutique hotel with a modern feel and really friendly staff.

When we arrived we were shown to our room by (the legendary!) Artur, who insisted on taking my suitcase up the two flights of stairs to our room (what a gentleman!). Our room was great, it was a decent size, clean, modern with a flat screen tv (BBC Worldwide, NBC), balcony overlooking a quiet garden area, hairdryer, cooking facilities, fridge with freezer compartment (ideal to keep ice lollies!), everything you need really. The bathroom was a little small but the power shower was excellent and hot water was always available. Be aware that it will be an additional (very reasonable) €10 a week for the safe and a little more steep (but understandable given the cost to run) €5 a day for the air conditioning. We decided against getting the air conditioning for our two week stay and didn't suffer for it, the temperature in early September is absolutely perfect, between 26-29C in the day and around 20C in the evening.

There is a Lidl store just a 2 minute walk from the apartments, which we used to stock up our fridge freezer (especially with ice lollies to cool off in the afternoon!).

Breakfast was ok, cereal choice was muesli or chocolate shells (I bought a box of cornflakes from Lidl for €1.50 which lasted me the holiday), my other half was happy with the hot food (fried/boiled eggs, bacon, mini sausages) and there were also occasional pastries plus bread, cheese and ham. Tea, coffee and orange squash were the drinks options. My one suggestion to La Stella would be to get a toast machine as it would have been nice to have toast on some mornings. However, given what we paid for our accommodation, getting a breakfast at all was a nice bonus.

Every single one of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful, from the housekeeping ladies, to the breakfast girl and of course the wonderful Artur who you will no doubt have realised from all the other reviews is a real asset to La Stella. We really enjoyed our evening chats with Artur, who would make me some gorgeous cocktails before we would head out for dinner, and keep the other half amused at the bar with a beer or two while I was still getting ready! I would highly recommend his 'La Stella Special' which was delicious (and too easy to drink quickly!), and he made a fab Mojito too - thanks Artur! :-)

We were happy to eat in Platanias most of the time as it has plenty of good quality restaurants (we loved the friendliness of the Garden Taverna and the romantic roof terrace at La Vergina). You can hop on the bus to Rethymnon for €1.60 return for a night out there (cheaper than a taxi) and we tended to walk up the beach to Rethymnon in the daytime (Lovely 1 1/2 hour walk and great exercise to work off all the delicious olive oil and houmous!).

One minor issue worth mentioning is the road noise as the apartments are quite close to the national road. We didn't actually notice it that much as after the first day or two though as its not that busy in the way our main roads are here in the UK and I think you become blind to it. Due to the location of the road many of the hotels in Platanias would no doubt suffer the same problem. It didn't affect our enjoyment of the holiday in any way though (I slept better here than I do at home!)

One tip if you're in Platanias in late August/ September and you're animal mad like me: this is the time of year the baby turtles hatch (careta careta) and the stretch of beach around Platanias is FULL of nests (they mark the nests with a cage, which you'll spot all along the beach). If you have a chat with the turtle conservation volunteers in Rethymnon (they have a booth right by the tourist office and are usually there in the afternoon) they will let you know when they are excavating hatched nests and you can go down early in the morning to watch. No guarantee you will see any baby turtles as it depends if they all got out (some get stuck in the nest and need an extra bit of help) but a good chance you might and we were lucky enough to see two, which we cheered down to the sea - a magical experience that really made our holiday (and no cost!)

we stayed at La stella from 19th aug- 2nd sept and it was excellent and cannot recommend it highly enough! It was small. friendly and very modern, clean and well maintained, a very pleasant change to our usual AI package! we had a 2 bed studio (111) on 1st floor overlooking the pool and bar, run by the very friendly Artur, who also is on site manager who is very helpful and knowledeable on most matters. The room was very spacious and equipped as described on the site. Air con has to be paid for locally 5 euros per day if booked via agent, but free if booked direct. We left our windows open most nights and did hear some of the chatter/music from around the bar and some traffic noise from the nearby dual carraige way.The pool is a reasonable size but little terrace area so not really able to move sun loungers around to follow the sun. we went to the beach most days just a easy 10min walk, cost 5 euros per day for 2 beds and brolly, if you went by posiedon bar on left you had free use of pool at the adjoining Minos Mare hotel and 10% discount at bar! The best restaurant along the strip was the Marem, but it only costs 1.20 euros for a single bus to rethymnon centre and there are 100's to choose from and a great vibe in the town. If you stay round the bar you will be well entertained by Artur ''the best barman in the world''( his words) and get to samples his cocktails and shots( Alien brain!)Breakfast is simple buffet style, yoghurts, museli, bread, ham, cheese plus fried and boiled eggs, bacon and sausages. The photos pretty much show the place as it is, and to sumarise this place is very clean comfortable with excellent hosts, perfect for couples, and would go again and would recommend to anyone.Brilliant!

Room Tip: book direct with hotel for free air con,

We were really looking forward to our stay at La Stella but felt we were let down by our room. We requested a Double Room on a high floor and ended up with a room on the lower ground floor which meant absolutely no view and a tiny balcony. When we compared our room to our friends, we pretty upset as they had a large room (albeit a Twin) with a view overlooking the pool and paid less than us. We asked to be moved but the owner advised that this was not immediately possible but he would let us know in a couple of days if things changed ... we didn't hear from him again.

Breakfast definitely needs improving. First morning; no hot water for tea and coffee cold, no variety of pastries, eggs and bacon poor. We found it strange that the jams were left out all day and all night, just on the side.

Our room wasn't cleaned on a couple of occasions so had to chase housekeeping and twice we were left with towels with holes in. My boyfriend had to take the bin out himself on one occasion and was asked to throw it out into the main bin outside of the Hotel. Not something you would expect from a four star Hotel.

We didnt find the staff overly friendly except for Artur who is well liked by the guests and was very helpful to us.

Platanias is a little too quiet but we would definitely visit Rethymnon again, loved it there!

Me and my girlfriend took our time looking for the right hotel as we really wanted to visit Crete, and after finding La Stella we were excited by the reviews so we booked via the website (flights already sorted) which was simple and easy. I called them after booking to ask about transfers and they arranged for the local taxi service to collect us for €80 which saved us €40. After arriving at La Stella we were greeted by the friendly Artur and shown to our room. The room was clean and modern, with kitchen appliances, flat screen TV, free wifi, air con (for a fair €5 per night), safe and hairdryer. We spent the first few days at the nearby beach (10 mins walk) and spent our evenings in Platanes (5 mins walk). The food was nice and reasonably priced, during the day we would share a greek salad for €4 at the beach taverna "Poseidon" and we recommend the restaurant with the chalkboard advertising a "romantic roof terrace" just to try their stifado. After a few days we decided to hire a car from Voyager (€40 per day with full insurance) and venture around Crete. We visited 4 beaches but our favourite was Triopetra on the south of the island, it's an hour drive but the journey was ok. We took the car into Rethymno for the evening to visit Prima Plora, a restaurant that Giorgos (the hotel owner) recommended, we loved it, the restaurant was right by the sea and they served fresh fish caught on the day. We spent the last few days by the pool, the hotel has a relaxed atmosphere with with a nice pool to cool off in. After most evenings we would have a night cap at the bar with Artur and the other guests, Artur makes some nice cocktails although I wouldn't recommend his "alien brain" if you're a bloke. All in all it was a great holiday, I will definitely be going back to La Stella, from June to September it is hot in Crete and if you time the flights right you can get a very cheap holiday.
