If you look for the perfect stay in Rethymnon, this is the hotel to stay at! The amazing and friendly staff gave us a warm welcome, and probably the best stay I've ever had in Crete and other greek islands. The hotel rooms are huge, and of a very modern up-to-date standard, making you feel very at home. You get a fully equipped modern kitchen, huge terrace, livingroom, bathroom and a bedroom with very comfy beds. This I can recommend for sure!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice!

We chose the hotel for our honeymoon based of the photos, but I was a bit afraid for what
the hotel really was. Well I had the best suprise of my life. The hotel looked exactly as the photos. Luxury big apartments, huge balkonies and the best sunsets ever. The hotel provided special menu for two, sooooo romantic, that made our evenings even more better.
Special thanks to all the staff, Dinos, Giorgos, Christine, Vaggelio sorry guys if I forget someone. We will definetaly be back for our first anniversary.

HOTEL-The hotel is as pictured on their web site. We had the 2 room apartment. It was very spacious. It had a full kitchen, living room, 2 bathrooms, 2 big bedrooms, and a large balcony that looked to the sea and plenty of closet space. If you intend to stay here for a couple of days or for a month, it is grand!
LOCATION- We had a car but chose to take a cab to town. There is a hill up to the place and there is some parking places there or up a ways. There is a supermarket a block away and some restaurants across a busy road.. I think there was a bus station across the street also.
STAFF- Christina was very helpful in booking and any questions that we had. The front desk was also very helpful.
BREAKFAST- It had one of the best breakfasts in Greece. It had alot of different varieties of many Cretan delicacies.
POOL- There was also a very lovely pool .It had comfortable chairs and umbrellas.
If you want a clean, large place to stay with a great breakfast-- This is your place. We would stay here again.

The Suites
The Macaris Suites were an excellent base for our sightseeing/beach holiday in Rethymnon.
All the suites have a sea view - we were on the top (8th) floor and had a wonderful view over the town and the open sea. We had a spacious one bedroom apartment but there were others with two bedrooms. There was a lounge, separate bedroom and bathroom. Patio doors led from both the lounge and bedroom to the balcony which was the full length of the apartment. Each door had an insect screen which was great because you could leave the doors open with the screens across to let in the fresh air if you preferred that to having the air conditioning on. (There were separate air conditioning units in the living and bedrooms with remote controls). The large balcony was furnished with two really comfortable chairs and a table in addition to a wooden dining table and four chairs. In the lounge area there was a bed settee, small television (on which you could get English news) an armchair and a dining table with four chairs. The kitchen had a large fridge freezer, electric hob with 4 rings and a kettle. (I can’t remember if there was an oven as we didn’t cook). There was crockery, cutlery and glasses for 4 people and a corkscrew. The hotel provided a sponge for washing the dishes and there was a liquid soap dispenser. The bed was huge (like you get in America) and comfortable, 4 pillows were provided and there were also another 2 for the bed settee which was a double. The wardrobe had 14 hangars, a full length mirror and a combination safe. One side also had three large drawers. There was also a separate unit and chair with a wide mirror above and storage for cases. The bathroom was in 2 sections divided by a see-through blue door. In the first section was a large brown sink with a mirror above. There was a magnifying mirror in it but unfortunately the light wasn’t really bright enough to make the best use of it. The hair dryer was on the left hand side of the sink. It was a long hose with a nozzle at the end. It had one temperature and was quite strong; I found it quite difficult to style my short hair with it. There was another liquid soap dispenser above the sink and plenty of towels although no face cloth. The towels were stored in a unit below the sink with the spare toilet roll. Behind the door in the second section of the bathroom there was a Jacuzzi bath with an overhead shower. The shower could be removed from its holder and it was quite powerful. There was no shower screen (presumably because of the rounded shape of the bath) so every time we had a shower the floor got soaked. There was another dispenser next to the bath with shampoo/shower gel in it. The toilet was next to the bath.
Breakfast
Breakfast was served until 10.30a.m. There was plenty to choose from: a selection of prepared fruit such as melon, orange, kiwi etc, ham and cheeses, cereals and a selection of hot foods such as bacon, sausage, fried eggs, boiled eggs, pieces of omelette and croissants. There was a selection of different breads and a toaster that did actually toast the bread! The staff ask what you would like to drink and bring juice and tea or coffee to your table. If you ask for tea you are served a basket containing a selection of herbal teas plus Lipton’s Yellow label which is the nearest to a proper cup of tea. You don’t get milk unless you ask and it did seem to be more like cream when it came! I was a little disappointed that the orange juice was orange squash rather than fresh orange as we saw lots of vendors selling oranges along the roadside so they are presumably plentiful, but other than that no complaints, I really enjoyed breakfast especially the fried eggs which were always perfectly done, and there was a really good selection of different things to choose from. There were a lot of young children in the hotel and they all seemed to be enjoying their breakfasts as much as the adults.
The pool
The pool area looks small at first glance but it was never too busy; you could always get a comfortable sunbed and an umbrella. There was a children’s pool that the little ones loved and enough room in the other pool for adults to cool off. We found it very hot by the pool as there was no breeze so as we had hired a car we drove instead to a few different beaches. Drinks were available from the bar close by the pool. NB You can hear the music being played in the bar when you are by the pool.
Nice touch
On our first day we came back to the apartment to find a lovely plate of freshly prepared fruit and a small bottle of wine. Very much appreciated!
Staff
We found everyone to be really helpful and friendly; Reception staff, the waiters and waitresses in the dining room and the maids who did an excellent job cleaning the suite.
Warning!
From the main road there are 62 steps to climb before you get to car park level (the alternative is a steep twisty incline plus the 20 steps from the car park to the hotel entrance itself). We didn’t find it too much of a problem but it would be a consideration if you have difficulty climbing stairs. There is a ramp alternative from the car park to the door which is useful for pulling cases rather than lifting them up the 20 steps to the entrance.
Location
The hotel is on the other side of town to most of the tourist development. The hotel was so good though we didn’t mind being a bit out of the way. It is a 10/15 minute walk into the old town and for the first part of it you can either walk along a very busy main road where there are numerous businesses e.g car dealerships (and not a lot of pavement at the time of writing) or along the sea front past a dilapidated building, a gym (you’ve got to admire people who can go on a running machine in that heat!), the church, and from there along the sea wall until you pass the stadium. We preferred the waterfront route as it also gave us the opportunity to watch the gorgeous sunset every night and at the time we stayed (July 2011) there were major road/pavement works going on right outside the hotel and all along the main road so that you were walking on stones and rubble if you went that way. We developed a routine where we walked in by the sea, ate in one of the many lovely restaurants in the old town before heading out towards the promenade on the other side of Rethymnon. This is pedestrianised for about half a mile until 1am and there are lots of bars/ restaurants there. We would have a couple of drinks before getting a taxi back for 5 Euros.
Overview
Lovely, spacious suite with a huge balcony overlooking the sea. Away from the rest of the tourist development but this isn’t a major problem. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
Recommendations
Beaches
We discovered a Cretan sandy beach will often mean sand + lots of stones. We went to:
Petres (about 10 minutes away from Rethymnon on the main road towards Chania). This was a mixture of sand, stones and shells. Not too busy, lots of umbrellas and sunbeds and a few beach bars. (One of which plays very loud music you can hear even when you are right by the sea).
Plakias (on the south coast). We were very disappointed as the main beach close to the resort was again very stony, there was a sandy part at the far end but it was occupied by nudists.
The Blue Beach – there is a long stretch of beach just past Petres next to the main road in Georgiopoli province, about a 15 minute drive from the Macaris Suites. As you drive along you can see lots of scattered beach bars with sunbeds. There is a ‘Blue Beach’ where there are a lot of different beach bars and sunbeds etc set out but we found the nicest sand was by a bar called Poseidon. It is located at the first big lay-by after the Mythos Palace hotel. They have their own handwritten sign saying ‘This is the Blue Beach’. (There are wooden signs in the sand further along saying ‘the Blue Beach starts here’ presumably they are more official?) We paid 5 Euros for 2 sunbeds, an umbrella and a free soft drink each from the bar. The beach is stunning, rolling waves with a backdrop of the mountains. Once we found this beach we didn’t go anywhere else.
Car Hire
We booked online at home through Economy Car Hire. They emailed us a voucher for Sur Price Car Rentals. Everything was very smooth, as we came out of the arrivals hall we saw a sign with our name on, the formalities were completed at a side desk in about 5 minutes and we were then led across the road to where the car hire parking is located. We were on our way (with a very useful map) very quickly. NB If you haven’t driven in Crete before what looks like the hardshoulder on the main road is used for moving out of the way when a faster car approaches from behind. Also Crete is very mountainous so if hiring a car consider how it will climb steep roads, our 1200 cc Clio managed OK but we didn’t venture too high up.
Eating out
There are lots of lovely restaurants in the old town. We found a variety of prices for a meal for two – from 22 Euros to 66 Euros depending on where we went. Look out for Specials on the boards outside the restaurants – they are set menus for one or two people and are really good value, often including a bottle of wine as well as a starter and main course. Some restaurants gave us free bottled water/bread baskets, others charged, but everywhere after the meal we were given some kind of small dessert free, usually fruit but we also got tiramisu and a crepe with fruit and ice cream. We also got free Raki everywhere. Staff were very friendly and the service was good; it was strange though to hear customers and waiters conversing in English when it was obviously not the first language of either! Locals seemed to be surprised that we were actually English; perhaps not too many English people go to Rethymnon.
Bars
There are lots of bars to choose from, all with friendly staff who greet returning customers like old friends. We always got free snacks (nuts, crisps) when ordering drinks but drinks aren’t cheap, e.g. 10 Euros for a large Mythos beer and a gin and tonic. Our favourite by far was Elena’s which is on the pedestrianised section of the seafront where we were served by the lovely Illias who made us so welcome. Worth a visit.

We have just returned from the Macaris just over a week ago and like to say that this is a hidden gem.
The owner and staff are extremely helpful at all all times.
The apartment are spotlessly clean and have a dish washer ,fridge and cokker if you need it.
The pool is so nice and very private.
There was a small problem with the booking of our room by our travel agent but the hotel staff quickly resolved the problem and we did not even have to change our room after the first night.
There is a fantasic choice for breakfast and there is a nice snack menu which is useful if you want something before dinner in the evening.
we will definitely be going again on our next visit to Crete.
The Sapa is being refurbished at the moment but I am sure that when it is ready it will be as nice as the rest of the hotel.
