The old town of Rethymon is a wonder to behold. The alley ways stretch in a grid pattern across the old town. They have an array of shops selling local wares and many an old lady crocheting tomorrow's stock in a doorway. Well worth a stroll around this timeless space.

What a lovely charming town to just lose yourself in and soak up the atmosphere. Stroll along the harbour front, people watching as you go whilst taking in the sights. The locals were also so friendly and quick with a smile. When we first arrived I was standing looking at a map when a local came up to me to ask if we needed a hand with directions.
After strolling along the waterfront we lost ourselves in the maze of narrow streets which were just full of charm and character as well as many cafe's, shops and restaurants. We found ourselves a small café (with a lovely friendly owner) up a side street between two of the narrow streets and just sat with a coffee, gorgeous homemade apple cake and soaked up the atmosphere for a while before continuing to explore the charming streets. I know it sounds a silly thing to say (as we were in Crete) but it really did just feel so Cretan. For us it was definitely the nicest town we have wandered round in Crete so far and look forward to exploring some more next year :-)

Go all the dark small backstreets! They are so cozy instead of the crowdy "shopping strreets"
You have a lot of restaurants by the streets, lots of shopping and jewelery. Do not miss the new trend with Italian ice cream!
The Fortezza is a nice place to walk and have a view over the sea.

Harbour. Plenty of restaurants. Cobble streets. Shopping. Lots of trendy bars. Very relaxed and friendly feel.

With its beautiful venetian harbour and foreshore, its old world atmospheric back streets full of shops, restaurants & bars, its a wonderful town to stay and explore. We stayed nearby the town and strolled in most afternoons or evenings for a drink and dined in some great restaurants. I preferred this town to Chania or Agios Nikolaos. .
