We weren't actually staying in Rethymnon but in Georgioupolis 20 minutes away. We got the bus to Rethymnon and it was only a ten minute walk along the main road straight to the old town. There were a vast amount of shops and restaurants in a traditional, old European town setting. Absolutely stunning buildings and even has a manmade beach where the lighthouse is.

Gorgeous town to wander around. People so friendly.
Lovely shops selling so many lovely items.
Special treat at Mona Lisa. Bringing home freshly made Baklava

we enjoyed the stroll thru the old town and the many narrow streets with lots of activities and shops/restaurants.

Really enjoyed just wandering around soaking up the atmosphere of the intricately woven narrow streets , Venetian harbour and the amazing Fortezza. The graffiti is the only small negative and such a shame but if you can look beyond that (upwards to the flowered balconies, stairs and doorways) it is a beautifully picturesque paradise
