“Lovely old town - harbour very hassly though”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

It's a beautiful old town. Some of the streets have lots of shops and / or restaurants. The shops are very repetitive - lots selling the same silver jewellery. Some of the restaurants are in incredibly beautiful old buildings - I don't know how expensive they were but it would be a treat to eat in some of them.
The venetian harbour is not that amazing and when you walk around it you get a lot of hassle from people trying to get you in their restaurants and I met people who had had really rip-off meals there.
The best bit was wandering the very pretty streets that had no shops and also finding odd things like the old mosque.
If you want a very cheap and filling snack I recommend Souvlitsa - a brilliant little souvlaki place that also does lovely falafel wraps and other things (same price eat in or takeaway). It is on the corner of Koroneou and Karai.

“Atmospheric with many hidden delights”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

I spent my first day around the port, the seafront promenade, the beach, then I discovered the Old Town and realised why friends are recommended Rethymnon. Winding streets with displays of flowers, some interesting shops in among all the tourist kitsch, and good places to drink coffee or eat ice cream and watch the world go by. I found the Rimondi Fountain, Archeological Museum, the Historical & Folk Art museum, the Centre for Byzantine Art, the cathedral, and lots of quirky architecture. I was never bored when in this part of Rethymnon.

We stayed for two nights, which is at least one too many. The old town is full of kitsch and samey shops. We do not like pushy waiters. The biggest disappointment were the graffiti inscribed walls of historic buildings. Incomprehensible. Crete is naturally charming, but unfortunately, despite loving locals this does not apply to Rethymno.

“Lovely & atmospheric”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

Old narrow streets, Venetian walls and fountain, imposing Fortress and pretty mini harbour with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants make Rethymon old town a delight.
A welcome and atmospheric relief from the generic beach front.

“A stunning old town”
Reviewed November 1, 2013 via mobile

Old and beautiful town with many winding streets for some fantastic bargain shops. Theres so much to see including an amazing cathedral and various churches, the fort is immense and full of history and the venetian port is a sight to behold. The beaches are some of the best on the earth with there golden sand and warm turquoise waters. The locals were always friendly and very kind and helpful. I cant wait to return.
