The streets are very narrow, but be warned on 1st or 2nd days easy to get lost as all the street are similar. This is so typically Greek

“Picturesque and interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

Whilst the old town is interesting and well worth a visit, the jewel in the crown is Rethymnon harbour, which has the most wonderful restaurants and cafes with seating and tables right up to the harbour-side. It was difficult to pick one restaurant from another as they all look so tempting, but suffice it to say that we had the most wonderful meal at reasonable cost, watching fish swimming laziily in the water as we ate. This recollection of our holiday remains as a fond memory of our lovely holiday in Rethymnon.

“Rethymnon old town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

You can enter the old town via the promenade or any number of streets from the fortress side or Church side and enjoy the many wicked shops/bars and cafe restaurants. The streets are narrow and wind from one area to another so you could get a little lost if you didnt keep your wits about you. There are many interesting independent shops selling all sorts of things but herbs and soaps are found all over and you will find at least one shop selling herbs from a barrel rather than a plastic bag which holds little and not much different to the UK supermarket stuff. The ladies will find many independent jewellers selling real gold items and gems. There are lots of hand made necklaces etc which could not be found elsewhere. All in all you could spend an enjoyable day wondering round but beware of the costs of food as you "pay for the view". If there are a few of you, look to eat by the harbour or further out on the promenade where its a little cheaper.

Lovely small town with great dining, oceanfront hikes and a good central point for further exploring Crete
