We consider ourselves very fortunate to have stayed at Astali when we first visited Rethymno a decade ago - we have been coming back as often as we can over the years, when we want to relax and recharge our batteries. Small and simple, this hotel is run by the family/owners with great attention to detail and much personal warmth. The bedrooms are, like the hotel, small and simple (when will we learn to pack less stuff!), but comfortable, with a balcony to sit and watch the world go by. This is a great base from which to stroll to the beach or into the fascinating old town, or to a favourite cafe. There are plenty of activities to do and destinations to see, and the Astali family will happily suggest places to visit, but it is also possible to spend the whole holiday doing very little at all and feel that you have had the most relaxing, reviving and restorative break ever.

Stayed for 14 nights. Family run hotel who display favouritism and prefer older guests, as opposed to younger ones. Some family members were nicer than others.

The breakfast was the biggest disappointment and we wish we had gone self-catering somewhere else. Breakfast was completely inadequate: tinned sliced peaches, bitter Greek yoghurt, very cheap watermelon, stale cereals in silly dispensers. The same breakfast everyday, no variety. There was a very rude maid there who complained about us to the hotel staff in Greek obviously, and was very unprofessional. Our rooms were cleaned at inconvenient times and hoovering started at 7am in the morning, right outside our room. Little consideration given. The maid also told me to "Get on the balcony", while she was cleaning our room, in a rude manner and she had a bad attitude.

The woman with frizzy hair didn't acknowledge our presence, and was a bit strange. She used to make a fuss over some particular guests and ignore others, inconsistent treatment. Staff complained that we were using too many towels, when there was a clear notice in the room saying we could leave our towels on the floor, if we wanted new ones. Hotel policy apparently, but we weren't informed of this policy and they only told us 8 days in.

The hotel was clean and was in a good location, unfortunately this was the only pro, despite many cons, some family members let it down. The rooms were also too small, I bashed my legs several times on the furniture. There was too much furniture put in a small room, which made it appear even smaller. The dressing table was unusable. The shower was claustrophobic and the shower curtain made movement very restrictive. The maid with blonde hair needs a big wooden spoon, since she clearly reports every insignificant detail to the management, and takes her job very seriously.

We have just come back from spending 2 weeks at the Astali. This was our first visit to Rhethymnon and we chose it for it's position, a few minutes from the beach and a short stroll to the old town and we were very pleased with our choice. It's a family run hotel and there is always someone around the reception area to give information, advice or just to have a chat. The rooms are nicely furnished and kept spotlessly clean. Towels and bedding are changed frequently. There is free air conditioning and the free wifi works in the bedrooms as well as the lobby. There is a small lift for those unable or disinclined to use the stairs. The lounge/breakfast area is also nicely furnished and there is a shady terrace outside where you can sit and have a drink or take out your last cup of breakfast coffee. The buffet breakfast is very good and replenished all the time. The hotel has guests returning year after year and if we visit Rethymnon again we will definately stay at the Astali.

Hi , visited Astali end of June for a week .very welcoming ! Mother and sons who run hotel are extremely friendly and nothing is too much bother .All staff are excellent and we felt very at home here. Rooms are small but adequate.Air con great and free ! Bed very hard. Small balcony but good to wAtch the busy road outside hotel. Double glazing very good at keeping sounds out. Breakfast the same every day , bread , cheese , yoghurt ,fruit , cereal and cakes .All very tasty ! The lovely sandy beach and beautiful old town and harbour are only a very short walk away .loads of lovely restaurants nearby. Most guests return and it is very easy to see why !

We have just returned from the Astali and both enjoyed our stay there very much. The family are very friendly and make you feel welcome and relaxed. The air conditioning is good and Sky News kept us up to date when in the room. The room is small but very clean and comfortable. It is quite noisy sitting on the balcony but you do get used to that very quickly
The location is ideal and Rethymno is a great place. I would recommend the Double decker Red bus Hop off Hop on trip. It takes you up into the mountains and the little villages and was one of the highlights of our trip, also enjoyed a trip to Chania and Heraklion
Good value and we would return there

Discrete and unpretentious, the Astali Hotel in Rethymnon is a little hidden gem. This is a 2 star establishment, but with the customer care ethic and domestic service level of a 4 star hotel. Immaculately kept, and with genuinely caring service it’s easy to feel very welcome and relaxed. It’s family run with a well stocked bar 24/7, and a very few minutes walk from the old city and many of the eateries and car hire outlets in town. The beach is equally close, and the local supermarket is just about 5 minutes away.

Previous reviews really say it all about the good points, (and this small hotel is almost all about well deserved good points), so only the few poorer aspects are noted below:

Rooms are VERY small indeed, and I really do mean small.

It was only just possible two have two small people on the balcony at a time.

The breakfast area is tiny for the size of the population, and that was out of season.

Whilst breakfasts were plentiful and very fresh indeed, they were entirely repetative. Previous reviews did mention the existence of cold meats, but I think that’s now a thing of the past, and a wee bit disappointing. Just a few pieces of (eg.) salami would have made all the difference.

Breakfast coffee is not a strong point at all. This really does need attention.

The shower curtain spread water all over the floor of the microscopic bathroom. This really, badly needs a glass cubicle.

The lift only just accomodates two very small people and two small bags, if your mobility is challenged then sadly this is not the place for you.

Having highlighted the few poorer points let me say that I would highly recommend this wonderful little place, provided you can cope with the size of rooms and balcony. For a 2 Star hotel it represents exceptional value and quality, far in excess of all 3 Star and some (so called) 4 star hotels we have stayed in over the years.

From the moment you step in to welcoming smiles (and a bowl of sweeties) to the minute that you leave you are treated to a friendly helpful professionalism that is worth its weight in gold. Remember though, that this is a 2 star hotel and priced very favourably so it cannot have all the 5 star features and it doesn,t need them! The hotel was immaculate inside and out and the towels and sheets and flannels smelt SO clean and were changed daily (i think). The breakfast buffet was varied and more than adequate. All the staff spoke to you with a smile and really cared for the customers and for their hotel. There were quality reference books on Crete and plenty of light reading books. We had a 5am leave but another family member who stays up all night saw us off and gave us a breakfast bag! This is a wonderful family run hotel up with the best and we thank them for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: The hotel is on the street but the air con works well and I slept perfectly although I am used to si...
