After a week in Astali hotel in Rethymnon we only know it was too short. The family who run this small hotel (36 rooms) still believe in Greek hospitality. They treat you as a guest not a source of cash,no matter the time of day or night any request was met with a smile and the assurance that it would be no problem. The hotel is clean, comfortable and well run though nothing can silence Greek moped riders. The media reports had made us a little wary of what we would find in Crete given all the problems. What problems? We found that visiting the island at the end of May the only effect of Euro problems was that Tourists were even more welcome and, apart from a few government run museums which closed early,we felt they were ensuring that they did provide value and service. We will be returning to the Astali soon.

Just back from a stay over the last two weeks of June with Thomson at the Astali. All the previous reviews say it all, and I would definitely recommend the hotel. The double-glazing wasn't sufficient for me, but I had earplugs so no problem. The rooms are not over-large, and the shower cubicle is rather small, although we managed, of course. Anyway, we settled in and enjoyed 2 weeks there. Air-conditioning worked fine. One thing I would ask the hotel to do as soon as they can (and I do realise that now is not the time to do it - although there is no apparent sign of recession in Rethymnon, it's bustling) is to update the TVs and get some UK TV stations. Otherwise everything was fine; hairdryer in the room; fridge (and water bought for Euro 1.80 for 6 large bottles from the 'supermarket' fairly close by. Each room has a balcony and there is a safe in the room. The hotel's great assets are the owners, so helpful and charming; it's cleanliness; and it's location. Situated within walking distance of the beautiful old town of Rethymnon (or busses stopping on the corner of the hotel and the main road), and yet a super beach is just down the road (turn right outside the hotel go straight down the road and the tourist office is there, just by the beach, to get info or maps). On the beach you can get baguettes/drinks/ice creams at the Ikarus stall, as well as parasailing etc, also changing huts on the beach and a rather dreadful scary WC (who is responsible for cleaning this??), and get two loungers and an umbrella for 9 Euros for the day. Leave your towel on the lounger and it remains yours quite safely for the day if you want to go for lunch or whatever: you've paid for it. Rethymnon is stunningly beautiful with super shops (esp. leather sandals, bags, super ceramics etc - really great shops) and a mass of alleyways. All clean (apart from the awful graffiti, come on Tourist office, get the place cleaned up and get your maps updated). The Cretan people are wonderful, friendly and polite and kind - you learn to avoid walking past the restaurants on the front where they implore you to go to their restaurant). I felt very very safe there. We did the Thomson Knossos/Heraklion excursion and Spinalonga/Agios Nikolaous (excellent tours, but the Spinalonga day is exhausting and Thomson need to update their website: you are collected at 06:15 not 09:00-10:00! I wouldn't have missed it, but it was exhausting, you can get all the tours cheaper locally with English guides. There is an internet cafe just across the road from the hotel. It has good coffee and you can become a member for nothing and get packages which make logging on much cheaper. You will find people still smoking everywhere inside, despite No Smoking signs, and at times the smoking in the Internet cafe got a bit much for us. Nevertheless I hope you will go to the Astali, (please give the family my warm best wishes), and you will have a super holiday in this lovely town.

Hello from Ravishing Rethymno!!!!! :-)

At first I would like to thank you for choosing our hotel for your holiday!!!
i would also like to thank you for your review! it is very usefull for us and also to future guests.
Unfortunately the room size and the shower is something we cannot change :-( back at the time the hotel was built that use to '' enough'' but not anymore. As far as the TV sets it is something that we allredy had in mind to change (with 19' lcd TV) for this season but last minute we had to postpone for season 2013 due to recession and a bad summer season to be expected.
Now graffiti and toilets is something i will let them both know.

that's all for now.

Thank you again very much for choosing Astali for your holiday

All the best

Marios

If you like small hotels with a local flavour - then you will like the Astali. The family who run the hotel are very welcoming and cannot do enough to ensure guests enjoy thier stay.

Rooms are confortable and clean, and have double glazing which deals with noise from the road. They also have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast was fresh and pleantiful, typically Greek, including bread, cheese and yogurt.

It is in a great location - 2 minutes to the beach, and a 5 - 10 minute walk along the seafront into the centre of the old town where the best tavernas and restaurants are located.

We stayed at the Astali in the last two weeks in September. Booking this hotel was a real leap of faith for us – we are easily swayed by the promise by infinity pools, complementary bathrobes, branded toiletries and at least 4 stars. Having accepted that, this is a very different kind of venue and this is a smashing little hotel. Its location is a real benefit – 10 minute stroll to the old town with its abundance of excellent restaurants, lots of local and very good bars and eateries and about 400 yards to the beach. No hassle to find yourself very good and reasonably priced food. It is also near to the yellow and red train stops and the trip booking offices (Satellite tour’s trip to Spinalonga is highly recommended. Won’t spoil it – but try and book with a driver called Spiridon for a real Richard Gere moment – priceless). Back to the hotel – exceptionally clean and well run – spotless not a scuff mark anywhere. Towels are changed daily and sheets frequently. Breakfast is fine given what you are paying for it – there is always some form of cereal, fruit (fresh or tinned) and limitless toast. There are eggs, preserves, honey and yogurt. The positive about breakfast is that service starts at 07.30 am and goes through to 10am. As others have mentioned there is a patio area – good for an early evening drink or nightcap and they were always happy to make hot drinks at any time. A fridge means that you can also keep supplies in your room. The family are really hard working, knowledgeable and friendly and we spoke to lots of other residents who were able to recommend various restaurants and trips. The standard (and price!) of this hotel has made us fans of ‘small and friendly’ and we would have no hesitation in returning.
