Aquila Porto Rethymno
Ranked #8 of 175 Hotels in Rethymnon
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 28, 2012

The Aquila Porto Rethymno is one of the most aggravating hotels I have ever stayed at. Here are a selection of my dislikes:
1) The air conditioning was switched off most of the time even though the temperatures were unseasonably high. It was unconfortably hot at night.
2) The cost of drinks in the restaurant were ridiculously high compared to those charged elsewhere in Rethymno. A bottle of sparkling water and a small bottle of Mythos lager was 8.20 Euros.
3) Reception staff were surly and it appeared to be too much trouble to direct us to the Avis car rental shop that was only 200 metres away along the seafront.
4) It appeared to be a major inconvenience to provide milk in our room to make a cup of tea or coffee.
5) There was no entertainment of any sort in the hotel.
6) It was nearly impossible to order a drink in any of the residents lounges. You had to go outside to the restaurant and wait till the staff had time to bring the drink to you which in our case was some considerable time. When we did receive the drinks, they were overpriced at 12.70 Euros for 2 coffees and 2 teas.
7) The main function of the staff appears to be to earn tips especially the annoying hall porter who seemed determined to manage our suitcases when we much prefer to handle our own suitcase and indeed airport security requires that we do so. We were even made to wait outside in the rain 10 minutes before the airport transfer bus arrived.
8) There is a main road between the Hotel and the beach which is busy all of the time. It was very noisy on the balcony and not at all relaxing. The noise at night precluded leaving the balcony door open to cool the room.
9) The food in this supposedly 5 star hotel was distinctly average with the same dishes repeated every night. It was ok for the first few nights but soon became monotonous. There was much better food in the taverna called Lissis 200 metres from the Hotel where the proprietor could not do enough for us.
10) The internet was charged at 5 Euros for 30 minutes when it should have been free in a hotel of this supposed calibre.
Overall, we were very dissapointed by this hotel rated at 5 star by Olympic and Platinum by Thompsons. We will go self catering in an appartment on our next holiday

Room Tip: All rooms are noisy - don't stay at this hotel

We spent a week at this hotel (7-14 October), and I can say this is one of the best hotels I've ever visited.
The hotel is conveniently situated in Rethymnon, so you can get to town center in 10 minutes walking, to a fortress - in 15. Beach is just across the street, and it's large and clean. The sea was also very clean and quiet, and not very deep.
The hotel inside was nice and convenient, the service was really friendly.
When we arrived, welcoming bottle of Cretan wine, some delights and bottle of water were waiting for us in the room.
The meals were really good and various. At dinner gentlemen are required to wear long pants, which was a bit posh for my partner :)
The hotel is really flexible at brakfast timing. We had an early flight back home, so they let us to have an early breakfast, 1 hour prior to breakfast time.
Overall, I can say that friendly service + nice and clean property + large and clean beach + good meal did the trick.

The Hotel is one of the more luxury looking one in that area along the beach of Rethymnon. Our main reason to go to Rethymno, was to visit a friend, who lives close to Rethymno, but we wanted with a hotel stay keep our privacy. In my opinion the 5 star rating of this hotel is a little overstated. I would rate it 3 stars, if compared to a businesshotel or 4star if compared to a leisure hotel. Anyway in comparison to other hotels in that area, this one is outstanding. The staff is amazing. It looks like, that they are permanently on duty and every request is handled immediate. We had booked B&B. The breakfast buffet is normal for that type of hotel, but for 5stars, i expect a little bit more like freshly made omelette/eggs acc to your wish or the like. The Staff refills empty trays on the fly, so you have from 7:00-10:00 always everthing available. It is not possible before 9:00 to get a different kind of coffee (like a espresso), because there is no coffe-machine in the breakfast room. They need to wait until the coffeshop opens at 9:00 and bring it from there. Twice a week, when entering the breakfast room, you can grab a kind of prosecco (champagne copy), which is not really enjoyable. Here the rule, "better nothing then "just something" would be a better advise. The hotelbar is very nice, have a good selection of all kind of drinks; the bar tenders are very friendly.Happy hour is around 22:00.Once a week , there is a performance, when we were there, it was russian dancers.Belonging to the Hotel , but in a seperate building is a a la carte restaurant and a coffee shop/bar/restaurant, which offers any kind of calories temptations.
The hotel has 2 pools, one with oceans view, the other is inside the complex.A fitness room with a whirlpool and a massage is available.Massage is run seperate from hotel, so you cannot charge your room, but need to pay cash. This might be so, or the masseur is making some black money here. Now to the room: we had booked standard room, which is not really big, but ok. We were lucky, our room faced the sea, but the balcony or veranda is very small, so you cannot really enjoy relaxing there. But reading the newspaper or surfing the internet is OK.But in the morning its nice to overlook the sea, when getting up.The room service was good, no complains there at all. The room has a mini bar, TV, stereo, aircon and an own safe, Upon arrival, there was mineralwater and a bottle of wine waiting as acomplementary gift.Free WIFI is all over the place receivable and also at good speed.(here i want to mention, that our stay was in autumn and the hotel was far away from fully booked). When looking at the cleaniness, our room looked from a little distance "very good", but when looking into details, already "very much used". The same situation, we found in the bath room. When looking a little behind some things, a desinfection or intense cleaning would be a good advise (e.g. handrails in the bathtube , shower handle from below e.t.c...).
To reach the beach, you need to cross the beachroad and the Hotel has its own beach sector with free chairs and umbrellas for the guests. Also you can grab fresh beachtowels there and give it back when leaving the beach. In my opinion, the sea water is not so clean as on other beaches, but this was explained to me, with the harbour nearby.
The day before our departure, we were asked by the receptionist, if we want to keep our room longer until our pickup. This is a very useful gift from the hotel.
Guest are international, were as i noticed a majority of people from Russia, Germany, Great Britain and Finnland.
What else to say: Yes i would go there again, but not with a 5Star expectation and then its perfect holiday resort, with a nice town in 10min walking distance.

Room Tip: Ask at the reception, about russians in your floor :-). It might be noisy :-), because of endless di...

Two week stay on half board" Mythica" class which gave us all the little add ons ,daily paper, fruit and water every other day, welcome pack on arrival.
Really enjoyed the hotel,it is located about 10mins walk from the harbour righf on the beach front, sunbeds and towels supplied.
The facilities are very good, food was excellent particularly in the a la carte restaurant. The staff here were very professional, genuine, friendly and helpful. The main restaurant staff were just the same but busier. In the main restaurant it can be a little crowded at breakfast and certain times in the evening. The maitre de ,Georgos, was excellent with a wonderful welcome for everyone and at the same time managing the whole show in a professional and unobstrusive manner.
Had a full sea view room right at the front which was roomy but you do pick up traffic noise from the road. The design of the bathroom is not good with the door opening onto the sink making it difficult for two people to use it at the same time.
There are plenty of areas on the ground floor to chill out and read or use the free WiFi.This can also be picked up on the beach.
The general manager was around every evening talking with the guests and looking for feedback. What makes this hotel are the staff who really are 5 star.Forget about the rioters in Athens the staff here work as hard as any you will find and are a credit to what the cretian people are about.
When you come out of the front of the hotel turn right up past a beautiful church onto the road running parallel to the beach road .There are plenty of ,cafes ,supermarkets ,and shops along this road heading west.
We used a car hire company two doors down from the hotel on the beach road which was excellent ,they allow you to park the car back with them each evening and the rates were very good with CWD included.€85 for 3 days.

Room Tip: Be careful what room you book some rooms at the back are very restricted in their views over the poo...

This is how we found all the staff of this hotel. They made us feel very welcome, which we find is a more important quality than luxurious exteriors. The hotel itself has very stylish and well decorated public areas, our room we found a little dated in style but very clean, spacious and equiped with all amenities. The hotel beach facilities were excellent and also kept clean and tidy, with every thing you need in the way of beach towels, fresh water showers and equipment for beach games. The beach itself is big and very good for relaxed swimming as it gently deepens, and the waves were never rough while we were there.
We stayed half board, and were treated to the most excellent and comprehensive choice of dishes for buffet breakfasts and evening meals. My wife has a gluten allergy and sometimes making allowances for this can be quite a problem. Not with this hotel, they went out of their way to cater for her dietary needs. We owe a special thanks to Magda in the restaurant for her efforts in this case.
The location is very good, the old town, museums etc are 10-15 mins. walk away. Local tour coaches will pick you up in front of the hotel, and there are several interesting local tours to go on. There are all the shops you need a short walk away.
We had a very enjoyable holiday staying in this hotel and would recommend it anyone intending to visit Rethymnon

Room Tip: Rooms on the lower floors keep cooler.

This was our first stay at Porto Rethymno but certainly not our last. Very hard to find any fault with the hotel other than the air conditioning which was far from adequate. The staff food and service was excellent especially Grigoris in the restaurant. He told me to say that lol. The blue flag beach was also excellent. Cant wait to return next year.

Room Tip: recommend the all inclusive option, good value for money. also recommend the sea view rooms.

We stayed for two weeks in late September/early October. We stayed half board and paid extra to have sea view balcony. The public areas of the hotel are spotless, and the hotel has a gym and indoor pool that I enjoyed , the two outdoor pools were never crowded as most guests headed for the beach, just across the road. In reception there are a mix of newspapers ( German,Dutch and English) and there's a small book area where guests appear to have left paperbacks etc.
The breakfast in the restaurant was a buffet, and really every taste was catered for, the fresh orange juice was excellent. We've never been half board before, ( in part because we like to discover restaurants and also I don't eat meat) however every night there was a choice of menus including a vegetarian option. I felt drinks in the restaurant were a little over priced, but the three course meal was very good value.
The rooms looked a shade tired, but the bed was comfortable, and the fridge large enough to store water, beer, wine etc. The TV had a limited range of channels ( BBC World and CNN in English), fortunately there was a bar about 10 minutes away that showed sport.
The location is very good, there's a bakers and supermarket literally just round the corner, beach across the road, and the town centre a very pleasant ten minute stroll.
