My girlfriend and I have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Porto Rethymno, and had a superb time. We were slightly apprehensive after reading some of the more recent reviews, but whoever wrote these must have been staying at a different place. The rooms were modern and spacious, with tv, cd player and everything you need pretty much (we stayed on the 5th floor and had a fantastic balcony overlooking the sea and the terrace pool, perfect for a glass of wine before heading out/after returning) but be aware that you get charged for tea and coffee (you can buy sachets in local supermarkets).
The food was excellent, none of the tinned veg as had been mentioned. The starters were buffet selection with a huge choice of hot and cold food, soup, salads etc. You choose the mains from a choice of 3, usually pork, fish or a veg option, and desserts were plentiful, again a buffet selection.
The staff couldn't do enough for you, especially Magda and the fantastic waiters and waitresses.
We used the pool on the terrace most days, and faced no queueing or jostling for loungers. The beach was a nice option, literally across the road and the fact that you don't pay for loungers is a bonus.
We didn't eat every night in the hotel what with so many fantastic fish restaurants available in the old town, but when we did eat out the option of having lunch in the al a carte restaurant, not a problem for the staff.
The wines weren't overpriced as previously stated, the cheapest bottle is around 17euro, and there was a great selection available, and this is of course served in a bucket of ice whilst you eat.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great getaway to Crete, be it couples, friends or families. We will most definitely be returning at some point in the not-too-distant future!
I would also recommend a trip to spinalonga, santorini and maybe renting a car to head to the beautiful village of Agios Knikolaos, and also head West to Chania for shopping, stopping off to refresh at the plethora of stunning beaches and coves on the way home!

Room Tip: ask nicely?

Just got back after two weeks at the Aquila and in our opinion it's a superb hotel, the staff were so friendly and nothing was to much trouble. The rooms were bright and modern with every amenity and good size balconies and we had a lovely seaview. Food in the main restaurant was varied and very good and lobster evening in the ala carte was first class. Location of the hotel was great, right opposite the beach and only a 15mins walk into the old town.We will be back next year for sure, looking forward to seeing Magda and all the staff!!

This hotel's location near the beach and city - and the talented and friendly hotel staff make this a wonderful place to be. From when I checked in until I left the hotel, I was seen and taken care of in the best way. Welcomed at the reception, talented people here give good advice if one has any questions or need tips on area activities.
All meals in the hotel dining room and outdoor restaurant, offers food and drink high-class. The food is served by fast-working and attentive waiters.

Management at the hotel were visibly present, they seemed to have a good overview of everything that happened, so that all guests were well taken care of.

The rooms are cleaned daily and smiling cleaning staff asked if there were things they could do better - or just wanted guests a nice day. Accommodating was also the young men who worked to keep the beach area clean and safe. Noisy melon seller was friendly but firmly asked to leave the area, in the same smooth way they were able also to deal with guests who were "fighting" for "best beach place." Do note that this was extremely rare, the beach area was a peaceful place - where only of waves was heard. Umbrellas, good adjustable chairs, clean beach towels, access to fresh water shower. One can order refreshments and snacks served on the beach. The beach is beautiful and has lovely fine sand.

On trips to more rural areas, I met a hospitable locals. Some wanted to sell hand-work, olive oil or cheese, others would show off their wine grapes. The communication in these areas went through the gestures and body language, since few spoke or understood English there.

Beautiful and richly decorated churches are worth visiting (remember to dress according to the rules). The people in the church greeted us tourists, we got to experience Gregorian chant, light candles and honey of being more beautiful fairs.

The hotel has two indoor pools, good sofa groups and access to foreign newspapers. Internet access, speed, was best early in the morning or late evening. Passwords are available for secure login.
It is a busy road between hotel and beach areas, young children will need follow if they should move back and forth. Provision of entertainment such as folk dancing, Brazilian dance performance and live Greek music at the hotel several nights a week.

A country, friendly people and hotel to return to - again and again!

We stayed for a week and the location is very near the clean sandy beach. Accommodation was very good and the standard room was larger than we expected with the advantage of a large balcony and sea view. We went half board and the choices of food in the evening and for breakfast were very extensive.
Quite close to the centre of Rethymnon but not too close and it was perfect for the evening strolls along the front to town and the lanes with the locals and other tourists.
Good pool, wifi internet in the room or even better on the balcony. Room was cleaned regularly and spotless upon arrival. No mould or bare wires etc to be seen anywhere! If we were the type of people to return over and over again as some of the people who stayed here did – this would be it.
