We booked a 5 day stay here to celebrate our daughters 30th b/day from 17th to the 22nd May. What a great choice it turned out to be. To start with, we recommend you hire a car. We went from Heraklion airport and would recommend taking a sat nav, you can hire one at the car hire at airport, if you don't have one. The hotel is a bit remote but we found it in the end. We were welcomed with a cocktail in the ultra modern reception, ( this modern theme runs throughout the hotel ), and taken to our room, by Jimmy with the golf buggy and Vicki. The room looked different to the one we booked. To our surprise we had been upgraded to a 2 story apt with our own private pool, wow. Also we asked for flowers for the room, for our daughter, and on the table was a beautiful huge bunch of flowers in a vase. The apt was fabulous with a large modern living room with patio doors leading out to a decking with table and chairs and sunbeds and pool, which had the sun from midday on. The bedrooms were fantastic both had balconies and a shared bathroom between. Only criticism was, that in the second bedroom there should be a dressing table & a full length mirror in each bedroom for the ladies. The t/v is a large modern one, but there are no English channels apart from the news. A tip, if you may want to watch t/v is to take dvd's as there is one connected to the t/v, or you can hire from hotel. The restaurant is managed by the fantastic Antonis, what a great man, he cannot do enough for you, always smiling, polite and extremely friendly. We had ordered a birthday cake, for the first evening, which he bought out to our table and sang happy b/day to our daughter, along with the staff. We must say that all the staff were fantastic, smiling, helpful and just seemed to be very happy that you were there, they made you feel really welcome, from Jimmy the maintenance guy right through to the manager, Basil Daniel, who helped us throughout our stay, thanks very much to him for organising everything for us. The pool was lovely with a view down the valley to the sea, with plenty of sunbeds, although we would think that it would be a lot different if there was full occupancy. When we were there it was not full. One day we had the pool to ourselves. We were on a bed and breakfast stay. Breakfast was fine, it had all that we needed from eggs and bacon etc, to cereals, fruit, yogurts etc. We had buffet the first night and both that and the lunch were fine although not 5 star, but were quite adequate. Although we had the buffet, other guests said the a-la-carte was better, and not too expensive. The bar area was nice but seemed underused to us, it seems that it needs something more to welcome you to stay, as there is just nothing going on, maybe they could introduce a happy hour or some event night, to make guests make more use of it, it really needs something, as they are losing a lot of business. There is no private beach owned by the hotel as far as we could make out. It is a tavern that has a beach area attached to it,. The beach is not brilliant but, is still worth going for a change. Venturing out, we went to 2 local Tavernas, which both overlook the beach, and are very good value. They give you bread and dips to start, and at the end you will be given some free cake, so be careful how much you order. The hotel will give you directions to these. We went into Rethyminon by car at night and used a public car park, which was really cheap near the harbour. We ate at the harbour one night, and in the end although they make it feel like you're getting free food and drink to entice you in, in the end the cost is high, you are paying for the location, but it is worth it, just be careful what you order, ask how much first before you order,if they start suggesting meals to you. The old town behind the harbour is lovely, with many restaurants and the usual tourist shops, with not much hassling, apart from trying to entice you into restaurants, but it is all very friendly, and funny, the Cretans are lovely people. The beach looked really nice with a long front with hotels and shops. We didn't use it but it looked good.
So overall a fabulous stay with great memories for our daughter for her 30th. Would we go again, of course, as we had a really relaxing time there. We would probably go in the low season again, because we can only imagine that it would be packed around the pool, (they need to build a further sun terrace on land below the car park adjacent to the pool ), also it would be extremely hot during the high season. Although this isn't a 5 star hotel, we have scored 5 because of the great time we had. A great big thank you to all the staff at the Rimondi Grand.
