My wife and I stayed for 2 weeks holiday, the hotel was clean, the room had a sea view which was nice. The staff are friendly especially at breakfast and the bar staff. The breakfast was included and was ok, we had sufficient choice of food. We never used the pool because we never managed to get a sun bed, other guests were putting towels on beds early before breakfast, this should not be allowed. The location of the hotel is great, very near to main centre. Many nice restaurants near to the hotel. Would stay again.

All comments in the last few months are fair. We had an apartment for 3 beds which was perfectly appointed, but with abysmal views (which after we got used to it was fine as we spent very little time in the room. In fact the street below offered a snapshot of Greek life. No problems with noise at night and the beds were really comfortable. The main benefit of this hotel is that there is almost immediate access to the old town, the Venetian harbour, the fortress and he restaurants below the fortress. Any other place (apart from Fortezza hotel) in Rethymno and you will be in squalid Rethymno new town suburbia.

The Ideon staff are functional and the standard of cleanliness is good. There is a happy hour for drinks 5.00pm to 6.30pm.

We’ve just returned from a week’s stay at Hotel Ideon and had a great time. I think we were given one of the best rooms (417) on the top floor with balcony and sea view. The room was very clean with Air Con, fridge, TV and plenty of wardrobe and draw space. There is a safe in the room and the cost was 1.5 euro’s a day with a 5 euro deposit for the key. The room also has a phone and bizarrely one in the bathroom!!! The bathroom was adequate with a bath, overhead shower and curtain. The balcony had a small table and 2 chairs and most importantly a fantastic view and once the balcony door was closed the room was silent.

We didn’t use the pool as we’re really not pool people and like to spend our days exploring. Breakfast was adequate although the eggs always looked undercooked but there is plenty of variety and we always had a good feed! (Take your own tea and coffee)
On the very few occasion’s we spoke to hotel staff we found them very pleasant and hardworking, the outside bar on the front which is part of the Hotel is lovely and we always had a drink here at night. After walking around Rethymnon we really do feel we picked the best hotel to stay in, it’s in a great location, looks good and as some stunning views.

We would recommend the Hotel Ideon as an ideal base to explore from and it’s well worth the extra for a sea view room. The only negatives for us were the price of WiFi at 3 euro’s per hour or 40 euro’s per week which in this day and age is very expensive. Also they switch the Air Con off in the middle and hottest point of the day. These were minor issues and wouldn’t deter us from staying again.

During our stay at Rethymnon we did two excursions with Klados Travel – Gramvousa at 39 euro’s pp inclusive of boat trip and entry fee and Spinalonga at 37 euro’s pp inclusive of boat trip and entry fee. Although a touch expensive we enjoyed both trips and they were a great way to see a lot of the island (way too many places of interest to list them all here!) Both tour guides were very good especially George with the long hair! Budget and plan for both these trips as they’re essential when staying in Crete imo.

We also made our own way to Chania and Plakais by bus from the station (walk out of the Ideon turn left past the Fortress and it’s about 15 mins down the road, prices are around 6 euro’s pp each way. Plakais was lovely and a real piece of paradise and would love to stay here. There is also a boat from Plakais to Preveli for 15 euro’s pp but the times don’t quite match the bus timetable. I recommend you catch the morning bus to do the boat trip to Preveli then catch the last bus back to Rethymnon after 7pm. Chania was really just a bigger version of Rethymnon and very busy, we had a nice time here but really we preferred Rethymnon.

Eating out I recommend you avoid the Harbour as it’s very expensive and the meal we had was the worst we had all week. We had some lovely cheaper meals at “Restaurant Classic Pizzeria” and “Tassos” which is on the main strip along the beach. You can also get nice Gyros and cheaper Beer in the old town. My advice would be to walk around the old town first and avoid the Harbour. Prices compared to the UK are expensive. You will pay more for everything accept the cheaper meals which are about UK prices excluding London etc. and this goes for gifts and clothing etc. Don’t plan on any shopping just budget for food and drink.

While we were in Crete we did quite a lot of snorkelling and despite going to Gramvousa, Balos and Plakais the best snorkelling we found was right outside the Hotel Ideon along the rocky coast to the bus station. Was very good but don’t forget your beach/scuba shoes you’ll need them!

One final note - Rethymnon is full of graffiti and at first it was a bit off putting but you do get over it and even begin not to notice it. Why they do it or the police don't crack down on it I don't know but there's no attempt to clean it up either. A shame really because it's a beautiful place.

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Ideon and loved our time there.

The hotel itself is nice. The bathroom in particular was very good for Greek standards (most showers in Greece don't have a curtain so the water goes everywhere!) but this one was a shower in a bath with a curtain so much better. The decor itself is nothing spectacular, but the room was spacious with lots of storage.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast buffet is good with lots of choice and the scrambled eggs are delicious. There is a snack bar during the day where you can buy sandwiches, basic hot meals and salads. The food was very good and made freshly.

The staff are extremely friendly and hard working.

If at all possible, I would avoid peak tourist times. We stayed from 19th July to 2nd Aug. At the start of our stay, the hotel was busy but we never had a problem getting a lounger by the pool. By the second week (after schools had broken up), the hotel was much busier and people were starting to put towels on loungers to "reserve" them. So perhaps worth bearing in mind. The pool is beautiful and it's very easy to spend the day lazying by it, although some of the loungers aren't in the best state of repair.

The resort of Rethymnon is lovely. The town is beautiful - especially the old town, though the new town also has lots of funky bars and shops. The hotel is ideal for exploring the old town as it is only a two minute walk away and it is very close to an open air cinema that is really worth going to. We hired a car for 5 days to explore the island and Crete has so many things to offer!

The hotel backs on to the Old Town and faces the sea so it has a good position. On the debit side it has a small pool which is in shadow most of the day and limited tables for outside eating at breakfast. Staff are very friendly, as they seem to be everywhere in Greece. Across the road are good little restaurants for eating at lunch time or evening with views over the sea. All in all, it is about as good as it gets in Rethymnon. you won't be disappointed but you won't be bowled over either - good but predictable.
