Reviewed June 12, 2014

We (my son, daughter in law and 8 year old grandson) have just returned from 10 nights at the Kleoniki Mare (or Klonky mare as my grandson called it!). The hotel is accessed from the street via a bridge over the pool! We arrived at about 1.30am to a locked door with a telephone number for service. We waited for about 10 mins or so for a grumpy man to let us grumpy tired travellers in.Check in took about 5 mins and we had 2 apts together. Apartments are very basic, but spacious and comfortable, and most importantly spotlessly clean. We had sparkling white clean towels daily, and a bed change every other...xx Very helpful staff, without being intrusive.
Kitchen facilities are 2 boiling rings for cooking and a fridge. Two pans and a frying pan, basic utensils etc. There is a coffee filter machine.... but on reading previous comments we took a travel kettle..and found it essential. The lounge / kitchen has no natural light.but the double bedroom opens onto a balcony. Small shower room and toilet.Television in both rooms, but only english programme is BBC World News!!!
Lovely small pool, cleaned daily, sunbeds and parasols..x
Outside ..turn left 2 mins to a large Spar supermarket with surprisingly low prices, turn right twice ..and 2 mins to the beach, bars, restaurants ....perfect location !!!! My grandson loved Iro's bar, where Iro made him feel so special, with her cocktails and even a 'shot' at the end of the night !! Good food wherever you chose to eat!!
Its a lovely leisurely 15 mins or so stroll along the front to the town, for shopping etc
Downsides...on a personal level..being a retired nursing sister I tend to notice health and safety issues..old habits die hard !!
The only way to the pool is down some steps, and pool toilets and shower facilities are also located down a flight of steep steps without handrails, which would prove problematical for anyone with a mobilty problem. The tiles around the pool are smooth and very slippery, especially when wet, and hold the heat of the sun.
The apartments are next to a motor bike garage which generates lots of noisy bikers...and there is a dog which loudly barks non stop at bikes, vans .. well anything that moves. we never actually saw him ....just heard him from early morning...x

would we return....a unanimous yes .....!!! we would however try to fly to Chania, as the transfer time from Heraklion is over 2 hours ....which is why we arrived tired and grumpy ....but the Cretan sun and horizonal atmosphere soon kicked in ......xxx

Room Tip: all rooms face the pool ...

We have just been back for a week at Kleoniki Mare and it was absolute perfect as usual. It counts on the kindly and helping way the staff are, so we will recoment this hotel to others. If there is problems they all in the hotel is ready to help. The hotel is near by the sea and only ten minuttes walk from the Old Town - so Kleoniki is absolute the hotel in Rethymno you should choise. There is a little pool if you have children with you and of course you can use it yourself, if the sea is rough. I and my family will come back next year. Tove from Holte, DK

Just the right amount of everything - a city location not too far from the old town (a doable 20 min walk), an adequate sized pool, very near the beach (although we didn't use it much), clean and spacious rooms, self catering is really good - although food in the shops was really expensive for us with the bad exchange rate and generally very high prices. The lady that works here (Maria I think)) is so lovely and helpful, other staff also very sweet (the boss was less friendly however). We had a very relaxing time here. We booked two rooms and were given rooms 4 floors apart on the first night but they swapped rooms for us the next morning so that was much better. Everything seems so expensive this year generally but I think it was good value at this hotel compared to other hotels.

We stayed at Kleoniki Mare for 19 days, and enjoyed every minute of it. The people working there are always friendly, provide very good service and is eager to help with any question. The rooms-apartment is big and have a good standard. The cleaning lady does a very good job, and the room was cleaned 6 out of 7 days, with fresh towels. The poolarea is nice, with a poolbar, good showerfacility, with toilets and separate showers. We recommend this hotel highly and is looking forward to visit agian.

Kleoniki Mare is a great accommodation with clean apartments and a great location close to the beach. We stayed at Kleoniki Mare late July and we were absolutely satisfied with our stay.
Studio apartments offers accommodation for 3 people while the larger apartments offers room for 4 people. Our room was cleaned 6 out of 7 days, towels were changed once during our stay. The room had all the necessities needed during our stay including a kitchenette with refrigerator, air-condition (6€ per day during high season), WC with ventilation and free WiFi for all rooms. The cleaning was spotless. Staff was very helpful at all times but there's no reception service after 11 PM. Swimming pool area is of a smaller size but absolutely acceptable.
Kleoniki Mare Hotel is placed nearby the beach (60 metres) and close to the Old Town of Rethymno just about 20 minutes down the boardwalk. You'll find lots of restaurants, supermarkets, cafés and bars right outside the hotel doorstep. All in all a recommendable accommodation at a fair price.

Room Tip: If you have any questions regarding your stay or some special wishes to the apartment don't hesi...

Just visited this property with my wife for a week in August, this is a very clean apartment block in an excellent position, just 1 street back from the sea-front.
Check in was seamless and done in 2 minutes, you have to pay extra for the aircon, 6 euro a day, but you really have no choice as it was so hot in the room without it.
Room was spacious, simply decorated and very clean, 2 single beds pushed together and a small kitchenette area, however if you like a cup of tea , there is no kettle, just a coffee pot, so if you like a cuppa, take a travel kettle with you.
Shower was ok if a little small, i kept getting attacked by the shower curtain!!
Always plenty of hot water though.
The location is perfect, was really quiet at night when we were returning from our nights out, the front door is locked which is good for security.
Within 100 yards there are 3 supermarkets and loads of bars, our favourites were cafe IRO for lunch, right opposite Popeye's beach and Cafe Galero for evenings which is located right next to Rimondi fountain in the old town, about 20 minute stroll so very nice to just wander down.
Beach was fantastic, sunbeds were 4 euro a day but worth it as we found our pool area too hot due to a lack of breeze.
All in all a beautiful town with great nightlife, more of an adults place i would say really, but well worth a visit.
We will definately be back.
