Owner description: This beautiful 16th century fortress is a fusion of medieval European and Moorish architecture.

The venetian Fortress looks great from the outside with very impressive walls, but inside there is not even a cafe. All the old buildings were demolished! One ar two have been rebuilt but most are locked. The pavents are full of stones so you have to constantly look where you are treading. I would not go again. 4 euros to go in.

The site of the fortezza was larger than I thought it would be. The views from it are amazing and you can get some great photographs from there.

Avoid the hottest parts of the day as there is little or no shade on top of this hill fortress. Fascinating history, very quiet and atmospheric.

Its worthing taking your time to stroll around this old fortress, it would be even more interesting if some more of the buildings and fortifications were open but there are great views over Rethymnon and a family ticket is only 10 euro. Don't forget to take some water with you as it gets hot even in May when we visited.

The Venetian Fortress is certainly a very interesting area to wander around. The Fort covers a large area offers stunning views of the city of Rethymnon and into the sea. The spectacular views are enough to warrant a visit but for those explorers out there it offers also nice hidden niches such as little crevices and open buildings to discover! All in all a very interesting and beautiful location.
