“Fantastic Site”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Really well preserved site, gives you a good sense of what it would have been like to live there, cannonballs just lying around etc. Amazing views all around - see a lot of the biggest Cretan Mountains. Gripe would be dirty toilets and not a lot of info, plus quite a lot of thinsg were locked and it wasn't clear what you were missing out on seeing. Definitely worth it, just before sunset, allow 2 hours for whole thing.

“Wear good shoes!”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

Historic, interesting and well preserved. Work is continuing to keep this place alive. There is little shade - take water as you are exposed to the brutality of the sun. Wear sturdy shoes - lots of hills, slopes and cobbles.

“Great Views”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Well worth a visit if only for the great views over Rethymnon. The castle grounds are extensive and the mosque is interesting, but beware the overpriced gift shop. There are bathroom facilities on the site.

“Impressive fortress”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

I'm guessing this is the largest Venetian fortification in Crete. Exterior walls are well-preserved.

I wonder why they built so large? Seems unnecessary for a purely military installation?
Some aspects like the corner sentry turrets have an odd resemblance to the fort in St Augustine, Florida... built around a century later... was there a diffusion of military architecture at the time?

The interior has apparently contained a lot of buildings over the centuries, but not many survive today. The restored mosque is the highlight; not clear how much is original, but it's quite impressive.
