You do not have to be inro religion to enjoy this beautiful sight. The architecture of the monastary is breath-taking!

Additionally you get amazing view over the mountains and the sea from the cafeteria which is located just outside the monastary.

Crete is so packed with interesting history that it would be possible to miss something as interesting as this important monument - but don't! The Monastery is a historic place in its own right as a building from the second Byzantine period (961-1204) and a former place of learning and manuscript copying as well as sacred embroidery. However, most people go to see it as a symbol of the Cretan independence movement of the 19th century, when Crete was ruled by the Ottoman Empire.

In 1866, after nearly 200 years of Ottoman rule, Cretan Christians started an uprising. The battle that captured international attention was here at Arkadi because the ancient store room was blown up to prevent the capture of the civilian population by the Ottoman army. Of the 964 men, women, and children in the monastery at the start of the insurrection, 846 were killed and 114 taken prisoner.

The cost is about €6/adult and €3/child. It is well worth the drive and the fee.

Amazing history if very tragic what happened here. Beautiful place to wander around -- buildings are stunning and the gardens are colourful and well-kept.

The monastery is in the hills outside Rethynmon. We went on the little red train from Rethynmon beach front which was fabulous if not a bit bumpy. You got to see all the area and wildlife. We had just over an hour there but you probably need 2 hours to appreciate it. Theres a small charge to get in and its slightly fortified. The history makes it significant to crete you get info on entrance. The outside is very traditional and the church is Greek orthodox. Theres a little shop in there but outside the monastery is a little taverna and a souvenir shop...worth the visit.

It is very well preserved and you really feel thrilled by the story of this place and what people had done. You shouldn't miss the old tree with a bullet stuck on it, dating from that time. There's entry fee for foreigners, for Greeks it's for free. At least, they let us pass for free.
