We were passing through Rethymnon and decided to stay the night....It turned out to be a good decision as we had a really great time at the Taverna Knossos hosted superbly by Maria and her family. We had already run the gauntlet of the restaurant "touts" around the harbor and came upon Marias place simply by chance;
Greeted by a generous serving of "vitamins"...Raki for the uninitiated we asked simply to be fed a typical cretan meal. GOOD move! The meal was superb, fresh salad, stuffed vine leaves, grilled fish, prawns, potatoes, spinach, rice...all washed down with a seemingly endless carafe of red wine.
The entertainment was non stop...mostly due to Maria's brothers enthusiasm encouraged, I'm sure, by his love of life and Raki...there was even a couple demonstrating greek traditional dance.
The setting by the old harbor is idyllic and the Taverna and it's owners totally charming. Oh..I forgot to say...All that for 26 euros for 2 people! Eat there...you won't regret it.
