Review of Taverna Andriana

Taverna Andriana
Ranked #185 of 373 Restaurants in Rethymnon
Cuisines: International
Description: This is an upmarket taverna we found by chance and we return to the area because of it; in other words, it has become one of the attractions. It's the delicious, well cooked food, served beautifully, as would be in a first class restaurant. It's the personal attention of the owner, his wife and the staff. It's the fact that we enjoy spending the whole evening there; the owner makes you feel at home. Beautiful surroundings, good ffood, clean and enjoyed by local peoplle as well. A web site is being organised but I do have a telephone number also.

Real Greek food served by friendly staff at genuine prices. Not a tourist rip off place like on the harbour in Rethyminon

My fiancee and I visited this restaurant whenever we could, the food was fantastic and the service was great.

The owner was a really good host and always gave a free dessert or vodka, so no complaints there :)

Myself and my partner used this taverna on a number of nights whilst staying in the Sun Rise apartments up the road. The taverna had a good selection of local Crete dishes mixed with the usual fayre of pizzas, pastas and steaks. All the food was local and cooked to order. What was really good about this taverna was that a couple of dishes were suitable for my vegan partner. The owner was very willing to adapt dishes if necassary and remembered on our next visits. I think the owner was probably aware of dietry requirements as inside the menu was a notice that appeared to be in Norwegean and seemed to mention gluten free.

I had the souvlaki, gyros and kleftiko all of which were delicious with good portion sizes. My partner had the stuffed tomatoes and Aubergine 'Imam'. She also had the stuffed vine leaves, however this came with some tzakziki, so be sure to ask without.

On our first visit we were suprised to receive a small cake and small bottle of raki on the house. The owner quickly realised that my partner couldn't eat the cake and replaced it with a selection of sliced fresh fruits. We thought this was just a one-off. However, we received the same on subsequent visits. Be warned, the raki is home-brewed and has a kick!

We arrived at our apartment about 11.30pm after a late flight. There was a well lit taverna next door; we dum ped our luggage and made our way there hoping that perhaps, despite the late hour, they would supply a sandwich. Did they, heck!!! The owner, George, handed us the menu and told us to choose what we wanted. That was the beginning; we have been going there ever since. To think that in England we've had the menus taken off the table at 9 pm!
We actually choose an apartment that is as close to the Andriana as we can get! Why? Well, not only for that first warm welcome - which hasn't altered - but the cooking is wonderful, Greek if you want it, otherwise international menu and the personal attention that only Greeks can give, but George keeps an eye on things, making sure that the service and cleanliness are perfect. Local people eat there, including the Priest. There is a Cretan atmosphere, beautiful decor, with many plants and flowers, a bar where George likes to offer us a drink and loves to chat to us. Greek music is played, and other music, too; George likes to try and please everyone. Last year he included kareoke, which went down well. It's a pleasure just to sit in that lovely place, talk to George and his lovely wife Andriana, eat good food and feel welcomed. So relaxing. We are returning to Sfakaki in June for the fourth time (we went twice one year)!. We stay at nearby apartments Alkionis. The Andriana is on the old Rethymnon Road in an area called Sfakaki, a lovely area just a twenty minute bus ride from Rethymnon.. (Lovely beach nearby by the way, and the taverna is open from breakfast until 2 a.m. I believe George is going on the internet soon but there isn't a web site at the moment.
