We had lunch at the Erotokritos while on a day trip to Rethymnon. The harbourside position was wonderful and the seafood was excellent -- monster shrimps, lovely octopus, beautifully filleted sea bream and soft, succulent squid. The platter for two was so good that on its arrival we had to take a picture of it (see below). The surprise came when the bill arrived. When choosing the meal, we had gone with the waiter's suggestion in terms of a specific fish / seafood combination for the platter, but we hadn't discussed a price. The mixed seafood platter for two together with a Coke and a Sprite came to an eye-watering 97 Euros!!!

Food, service, location excellent. However, the moral of this review is make sure you look at the prices on the menu and if going off-menu for a made-to-measure seafood platter get a price before you order.

Delicious food, but you have been warned!

We are just back from our second holiday in Rethymnon. Last year we did not visit the restaruants in the harbour area as a local warned us against it due to the amount of pressure the staff of various restaurants put on tourists. However this year we went to the harbour and decided to have a drink in Erotokritos Tavern and the staff were very attentive and friendly and did not pressurise us into eating. We decided to return for dinner the following evening.

When we ordered prawns and grilled octopus, the waiter suggested we try a mixed platter which we did. It consisted of sea bream, prawns, octopus and squid (both of which were tough and probably frozen) and a very meagre amount of garnish. With 2 glasses of wine each, the bill came to €85. This did not bother us at the time, but on reflection and given that the squid and octopus were so tough, it did not represent good value. We ate both squid and octopus elsewhere and there were not tough and really tasty.

Now although the staff were keen to please, once an order is placed there really is no need for suggestions from the waiter, unless of course, you ask for assistance. In our case, our original order was what we felt like eating at the time and therefore we did not need any additional food. Be careful not to get sucked in by the staff!

wood fired oven for superb pizzas - we had "Inferno" - wow! Salads superb and we had free cake, ice cream and liqueur with our coffee. Really friendly staff - very good value with a superb view over Souda bay.

My husband and I had read reviews about the restaurants based at the harbour, the waiters are hasseling left right and centre to get people in but for the scenery it is a must and Erotokritos Tavern is the BEST one to dine at. We have a love of seafood and this restaurant did not disappoint. We had fresh fish, sardines, jumbo prawns served with fresh salad and it was one of our best meals in Crete. Lefteris, the manager looked after us and I can't praise his hospitality enough! We enjoyed the lovely views of the venetion harbour with all the fishing boats and took some fantastic photos. I highly recommend Erotokritos Tavern.
