“Excellent place to stay”
Reviewed September 14, 2010

My husband and I spent 10 days at Esperia Beach. We arrived very early in the morning and there was a notice on the board to inform us which room we would be staying in. The key was in the door and we gained access easily. The room was basic but has everything you need ;except we thought a toaster would be useful. It was exctremly clean and bed linen and towels were changed every other day.

Nick, the manager was most helpful he was always available in the afternoons. We were able to keep our room on departure for a charge as we were not leaving the apartment till midnight.

Our apartment looked over the sea.

The apartments are situated close to the bus stop and taxis are always available. For breakfast we used to go to the bakery this was more than suffcicient. At lunch we would either eat in the bar or eat in our room.

We got a taxi into the town everynight (5 euros) and found some great restaruants, our favourite was the family run tavern, excellent food and lovely people.

We would definately reccomend Esperia beach

Spent 2 weeks in the Esperia Beach - apartment for 3 (Mother, Father & 17 year old daughter); living/dining room; kitchen (basic - no oven) in corner; bath/shower room; mezzanine with double bed; lovely balcony with sea view (ate most meals there). Room is cleaned by maid daily, and bed linen/towels changed twice a week. Nick (owner) speaks fluent English and is both friendly & helpful - when we arrived there was a plumbing problem with 2 rooms (including ours) so he put us up at his brother's 4 star hotel nearby, in a larger room and threw in free buffet breakfast for us all for the 2 days we were there.(And Nick took us there & back in his car).

Situated about 3 km from Rethymnon centre at the end of the promenade, the Esperia Beach has many supermarkets (small ones) in the neighbourhood, lots of good restaurants (we particularly liked 'La Mare' - http://www.lamarerestaurant.com/ - 5 minutes walk away) and a range of other shops. Taxi into the town centre cost 6 euros, bus 0.90 per person.

BTW we booked a couple of excursions through our Thomas Cook rep and were RIPPED OFF! Book any you want from the local travel agents (3 in the same street) and you can save up to 20 euros per person, per excursion!

Room was a nice size for 4 of us with plenty of room, nothing was too much trouble for the manager and his staff cant thank them enough for the great week. The weather was great too definately go back again thanks Nick...

We arrived the first week of the season and were met by the manager Nick who was very welcoming and friendly. He showed us to our room which overlooked the beach and pool, we were very impressed by the room which had an upper floor with single beds.and the main part of the room was spacious and comfortable. The room had air conditioning (included ) but we left the balcony door open at night which kept the room cool with the sea breeze. The apartment block is on 3 floors and there is a lift to use for your luggage. The swimming pool is very small and deep so should be described as a plunge pool, as i feel it would be too deep for small children, but the beach is just across the road with sun beds and umbrellas (we paid 7 euros for 2 beds and 1 umbrella) Mario runs the bar and is very friendly , both Nick & Mario will do any thing for their visitors and they make the holiday special. We tried many restaurants but our favourite was "Tropical" Costas & Yianni were great hosts and the food superb....
All in all a great holiday in a great location.

We stayed here for two weeks after a late change made by our tour operator and overall were very happy with our stay.
The hotel is in a beach front location with the beach being just a few steps away across the road. Most (but not all) of the rooms face the beach and have sea views however there is a lower ground floor which is set almost level with the small swimming pool. These apartments face the sea but have an eye level view of the pool and road. This is where we started and having looked forward to a seaview we asked about moving higher up to get the sea view. We negotiated an upgrade and took a two-storey maisonette on the first floor which had a great view of the beach, sea and along the promendade to the Venetian fortress in the distance. The two storey apartments have a kitchen, bathroom, sitting area and single bed on the lower floor and stairs up to a gallery with a double/twin beds upstairs.
The apartment was cleaned daily with sheets and towels every second day. There is a bar with snacks and beach loungers available across the road for a small daily charge. The hotel is set at one end of the beachfront road and approx 2kms along the front lies the old town of Rethymno. You can get a taxi for 5 euros, or as we did most nights, you can walk to the old town in around 30 minutes for a fantastic range of places to eat with bars, cafes and a few clubs. This meant we could get some exercise after a lazy time on the beach as we walked to and from dinner each night. There are also local bars and tavernas serving meals very near the hotel but we enjoyed our nightly stroll.
Just up the side street there were two lovely bakeries where we could get fresh bread and cakes each morning and they always dropped a couple of freebies in the bag for us to try something new.
The only niggle with the hotel was the relatively high charge for a day room on our departure day as we had a night flight. Basically to keep the room through the day we were asked for the full room rate. However overall we had a great holiday and the hotel and location suited us perfectly.

The apartments we stayed in were nicely laid out with the bedroom on mezzanine level. The pool is tiny - we didn't bother with it. They were clean with decent furniture (we were told they had had a makeover in the winter). The self-catering equipment was basic. The staff were friendly and helpful although a bit random at times. The apartments are about a 45 minute walk to the old town, but there are generally taxis outside. They are reasonably quiet with a selection of tavernas and restaurants close by. Don't go to Vasily the Greek further up the street, he's a major league overcharger and loses his temper (or pretends to) when the bill is queried.

Our party included young children and grandparents and all found the Esperia a great place to base our holiday from.
The rooms are kept spotlessly clean by the friendly maid and although the self catering equipment is minimal, it is adequate. I managed to cook a meal for 6 people without a problem- but only a couple of times, as the local restaurants are such good value, it was easy and nearly as cheap to eat out in the evening.
We found the staff at the Esperia friendly and helpful and a nice family atmosphere prevails in the hotel.
The swimming pool is small but with the beach only a step away over the road, this wasn't an issue.
The fabulous bakery 5 mins up the road provide delicious pastries and breads for breakfast and opens 7am even on a Sunday!
The taxi rank is opposite the hotel and provides an easy way to get into the historic centre of Reythmon - only 5 euro's to the Venetian Harbour!
Nick , the owner's family have a restaurant in the harbour called the Seven Brothers - fantastic food and very friendly service, well worth a visit.
