Very small restaurant located in a back alley. Atmosphere is OK, but not as good as many of the other places nearby. Service was excellent, very prompt and courteous. Food was just average, and we had Maria's plate to try a sample of what they had to offer. Too much stew type dishes on the menu, it felt like eating pot roast back home in the depths of winter.

We stopped in Rethymno for lunch en route from Iraklion to Hania. After walking around the town for a bit, we pulled out our Lonely Planet to find a lunch suggestion. Thank goodness we did. Kyria Maria is set on a lovely little street in the heart of Rethymno's old town. We were welcomed by a really friendly woman, who appeared to be the only waittress in the place, but definitely did not miss a beat. She was fast, friendly and efficient. We loved this place so much that we had to stop again on the way back to Iraklio a few days later.

The bread was amazing and served with organic olive oil. We ordered the Greek salad on both visits, which had fresh, wonderful tomatoes and cucumbers. On both visits, I had the grilled chicken, which was moist and flavorful. My partner ate the Pasticio on our first visit and the Rabbit on the second, both of which he enjoyed immensely. The BEST of all, though, was the Baklava, which we of course ordered twice. It was so big it was like a piece of cake and I can guarantee you that we were fighting for the last bite.

Best of all, our lunches were both extremely inexpensive. A great find!

Really great food, lovely quiet location and setting. Service was a bit slow and rude, but overall it's a real gem!
