“Why War”
Reviewed July 3, 2014

Standing at the grave markers one is struck by the fact that so many young German men under 25 died in the Battle of Crete. My visit coincided with the 73rd Anniversary of the Battle and it was so sad to see that there were more wreaths from Governments and Associations in the graveyard than there were flowers placed on the graves of the fallen. This facility is beautifully kept and a credit to those who look after it.

“Thought-provoking experience”
Reviewed June 18, 2014

As with all cemeteries, a visit has the ability to make the visitor very reflective and pensive. Regardless to politics, seeing the graves of so many young men killed senselessly in the prime of their youth, is bound to make those present sentimental and sorrowful. More than 4,500 men, mostly under the age of 25 lie here. Just as a visit to the Commonwealth Military Cemetery at Souda Bay, this monument should (but sadly hasn't) taught us that war and fighting is not a suitable solution to conflict. This cemetery is well laid out, has write-ups about the Battle of Crete generally, but also some short stories about some of the individual soldiers and their backgrounds. Giving the visitor a much more personal connection to a few men buried there. I believe this is a really good idea, as it personifies the names. I recommend a visit to both cemeteries, each has it's own style and atmosphere.

“well worth a visit, steep hill climb but good views as well”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

Liked everything, lovely and friendly, military base nearby tho, some helicopters but no problem.bit scary if you got children as there are unguarded drops along the road, one we saw was about 30ft drop, so needs checking carefully and dont let them out of your sight as the safety aspect is no where near ours.

“A Moving Experience”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

A place that brings back the horrors of war and the loss of life on all sides. Set on the hill behind what was the German occupied runway at Maleme. A peacfull tranquill setting for the people who died for what their leaders believed in and giving us all time to reflect.
