Just returned from a week at the Ledra with 2 friends. Western Crete is fantastic if you are looking for the 'real' Crete, Maleme is quite quiet but a bus journey into Platanius and Chania is cheap and very easy. The room we stayed in had a funny smell (mouldly) and was on the ground floor (no view), we asked to be moved but the whole complex was fully booked so we couldnt. Didnt spoil the holiday though. The rest of the Ledra is really lovely though - the pool great, ice cold beers which were fantastic on the hot hot days, and the food delicious and home cooked with very friendly service. It is very true that the bar closes when the last person leaves.

Maleme has a supermarket (closed on sunday) and good beach in easy walking distance. We hired a car from the Libra rep and she gave us a booklet of routes to follow which came in good use and we found some real gems and great day outs. Definately recommend Falansarna (great beach and snorkelling), Sougia, Elafonnisi (although very busy) and Chania.

Overall - loved Crete, fantastic food - dont forget to buy lots of yummy olive oil and honey to bring home. The Cretans do it the best!!

Have fun!
