Well worth the effort....we drove to Ierapetra and caught the 1230 boat across, a pleasant 50 minute crossing. Being off-season the return boat was at 1700 but four hours was plenty. The taverna on the island had closed but you could buy beer and soft drink, and the food and drink onboard the boat was very reasonable. Both beaches were fantastic (the one where the boats dock, and Golden Beach, a ten minute stumble across sand dunes) - no wind when we were there, beautiful water - there are rocks as well as sand (it was the best snorkelling I found in the east of the Crete) but we certainly didn't have any discomfort getting in and out of the sea. The facilities are primitive and I can imagine it is less peaceful at the height of the season (particularly if you struggle to find shade), but that goes for anywhere. Highly recommended.
